Toronto recorded 14 hits in an 11–4 Game 1 win, highlighted by a nine-run sixth inning at Rogers Centre.  Daulton Varsho tied the game in the fourth with a homer to center, then was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the sixth. It was the first home run Blake Snell had allowed to a left-handed hitter this season.

Bo Bichette opened the sixth with a leadoff walk. Alejandro Kirk followed with a groundball single to right, then later in the inning added a two-run homer to extend the lead.  Ernie Clement put Toronto ahead with a groundball single up the middle. Nathan Lukes, batting off the bench, drew a nine-pitch walk with the bases loaded. Andrés Giménez lined a single to right to keep the rally moving.

Addison Barger delivered the decisive swing with a pinch-hit grand slam to right-center, the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history.  Toronto’s approach set the tone early by working Snell for 29 pitches in a scoreless first inning, then broke through as the lineup turned over in the middle frames.

Game 2 of the World Series will feature RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto for Los Angeles and RHP Kevin Gausman for Toronto. The probables list each with updated postseason lines entering Saturday.

Kevin Gausman enters with 18 innings in four postseason appearances, a 2.00 ERA, 12 strikeouts, and a 1.06 WHIP.  He made two earlier Game 1 starts this postseason, then started again in ALCS Game 5 and later appeared in relief in ALCS Game 7.  In his two Game 1 starts, he was lifted after 5 2/3 innings each time.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto has worked 19 2/3 innings this postseason with a 1.83 ERA, 18 strikeouts, and a 0.86 WHIP across three starts.  In NLCS Game 2 against Milwaukee, he threw a complete game three-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk after a leadoff homer, the first postseason complete game by any pitcher in eight years.  His October included a Wild Card clincher start and an NLDS start prior to that NLCS outing.

Yamamoto is only in his second year in MLB, and has not faced the Blue Jays.

It's really the same strategy today that it was against Snell, only with Barger and Lukes back in the lineup.

Have Blue Jays at-bats, work the count, and get into that bullpen as soon as possible.

Who do they pick to face all of our lefties? Banda got lit up and Dreyer has pitched once this month. Maybe it's Kershaw. I don't know, but if we get a couple of 20-30 pitch innings early on then I like our chances.

Kershaw only if they have a big lead, doubt they use him in late and close situations

we're gonna see Treinen and Sasaki today for sure and probably early if we jump all over Yamomoto which I suspect we will

I don't think we jump all over him, but I can see a scenario like last night where he's out in the middle innings.

I'll honestly welcome a Treinen appearance tonight. He's never been good against lefties in his career. Sasaki has a FIP of 7 against lefties as well.

Snell was the real test in my opinion and I was very impressed with how we performed. I think the Dodgers agreed, given that they could have started anyone in game 1.

Keep battling. Stay on the sticks and get back into that Bullpen. Going to LA up 2-0 would be massive. Forces them back to Toronto no matter what. Winning in LA is tough and they will be early evening games in the sun and shadows. Dramatically different feel to these games in Toronto.

Hopefully we see this kind of Vladdy as well during the regular season. Imagine getting 10+ WAR seasons from him. Pretty much would be a Top 3 player in all of baseball!

I just want a few more games of this Vladdy and I don't care what he does next season 🤣

Not sure we will just jump all over Yamamoto but with this Jays team anything can happen.

The Likes pa last night to draw the walk with bases loaded was awesome.

Going to need peak Gausman tonight.

Lukes is such a good ball player.  Solid in every respect.

Hopefully the WS brings out the best in Gausman.  Bassitt looked like he was sweating bullets last night in a 7 run game.  Lol.

I expect a much lower scoring game

Bassitt says he is available for all 7 games out of the pen. The guy is such a warrior and was so intense last night. I love him, he's one of my favourites.

If he keeps doing this in the playoffs Vladdy can throw up a .000 average in the regular season, and I won't care.

(OK, I'll probably care during the season)

Has there ever been a 1B that eclipsed a 10+ fWAR season before, never mind multiple seasons? lol... if he did that he'd be the best hitter in the game.

Wondering if maybe Lou Gehrig, Miggy, Frank Thomas or Albert Pujols ever did

Had to look it up

Gehrig had multiple 10+ fWAR seasons as a 1B, Jimmie Fox had one

In more more modern times highest have been

Pujols 2003: 9.5

Giambi 2001: 9.2

So yeah it's super rare/almost impossible for a modern day primary 1B

Lou Gehrig did it twice, Jimmie Foxx once, That's it, in the live ball era and on.
