Hoffman was probably warming up when the score was 6-2 and the top of the order was due up for the M's. The Jays adding 2 made it less optimal but if he's already warmed then you might as well use him, especially since he hasn't pitched much in these playoffs. Can't pitch him too much, but also can't give him too much rest. He seems to stink in both scenarios.

This is the role I like Hoffman in and something hes done during his best years.  If hes on, you let him go and if hes off then you pull him asap.

He can afford 5 solo homers.  6 would be bad.

A lesser reliever might give up a big homer to the top of their lineup and make this a game again
