Some days we all feel bulletproof. My point is, there's no correlation/causation to feeling "locked in" to performance. I'm willing to bet if there was a way to scientifically study what happens to every player on every day they felt "locked in" vs any other day, the same variances would exist. Humans make up all kinds of psychological stuff that isnt quantifiable to make themselves feel better about what happens in their day to day. That's how our brains work. You say that there's no way to quantify a relationship between being focused and performing well, but then proceed to say that there is no correlation. There's a reason why players perform poorly on any given day. It isn't fabricated, as you suggest. Bassitt and Berrios didn't perform well. Bassitt himself said that he wasn't prepared well enough his postgame interview. I don't think we need to look any further than that. Nobody would know better than him.

Anyone who has played a sport knows that you have days where just feel really locked in and focused, maybe you have something extra in the tank. Athletes themselves say these kinds of things in their postgame interviews, including Bassitt himself. These guys aren't superhuman, they don't feel the exact same every day. They call these the dog days of summer for a reason. It's difficult to stay focused in this part of the season and inevitably, some players aren't. It's certainly not some made up voodoo to appease stupid fans. So you think they control when they are locked in and when they aren't and you think Berrios chose not to be locked in today when the team is reeling?

Bassitt himself said that he wasn't prepared well enough his postgame interview. I don't think we need to look any further than that. Nobody would know better than him. I meant no way to quantify a relationship. Its easy to quantify is a player feels good... you just ask them. And the answer is gonna be "i feel great" 99% of the time because athlete bro culture says you always say you're good to go unless you're physically unable to walk under your own power. It's easy to quantify results... you just look at the box scores. When players fail, the vast majority of the time they'll always blame themselves, because that's what they do. When they succeed, they generally give credit to others... pitching coach prepared my well, catcher called a great game, i just had to execute... blah blah blah.... point is, even when they truly do feel locked in, theyre gonna suck just as often as they shove, and theyll still shove on days when they dont feel their best because variance is a thing. What happens when both a hitter and a pitcher are both "locked in" ? One of them has to fail. So... i guess only one of them was really locked in and the other just wasn't? Why cant they just summon this mysterious locked in feeling all the time? And if your hypothesis is correct, someone who is locked in should almost always be able to pull off what they want, regardless of the opposition's intent. Your hypothesis only looks at one side of the equation, not other variables in play, of which there are virtually countless, especially in baseball. Hence, unquantifiable. So we, the fans, apply whatever beliefs we have to the situation to make something that can never make sense, make sense. Brownie19 1

I really didn't want to get involved in this mess but, I just want to say Berrios is what he is. It is what he's been for the last several years. Up and down not just between games but even within games.
