How do deferrals work with opt outs? Say 60 Mil is deffered and he opts out after years one. Would he get 20 deffered? Or could they say 10 of the deffered is tied to year 1 20 to year 2 and 30 to year 3 to incentivize him to stay?

We would need to read the actual contract to answer this.  For example, it is possible the deferral amount is directly linked to whether Bregman opts out or not.

Yeah that's a really good question

First contract I can recall with both opt outs AND deferrals (might have been others just don't recall any)

Must be some compromise to the deferral if he opts out I'm sure

Jim is right but my assumption would be that he gets $40M in salary and some portion of it is deferred and paid out on a schedule. So even if he opts out after 2025, Boston pays him $40M for 2025 eventually. I doubt the opt outs change the deferred money already earned.

They really need to get rid of the comp pick penalty for FA. Just penalizes certain players and they have no way around it, like if a guy gets traded mid season(Kikuchi) he somehow is worth millions more than a guy like Pivetta. 

Unfortunately MLB/The Owners are so anal with getting every advantage they can with the PA that they use it for leverage instead of changing the rule benefit MLB as a whole. 

I would just get rid of comp picks altogether if it came down to it. Would make there be more trades generating more interest.

 The deferred money in the contract knocks the net present value of Bregman’s three-year deal into the $90MM range, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports. Per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the AAV will be calculated as $31.9MM for CBT purposes. Speier adds that there’s a $5MM signing bonus, followed by a $35MM salary in 2025, then $40MM salaries in the final two seasons.

Interesting. I don't hate Bregman for 3 years $96M.  I'd be ok with that.

Red Sox looks pretty good right now. AL East is gonna be a dog fight. You could make the case all 5 teams in the East look better than any team in the Central.

He just got a 100% raise, he's not opting out of anything.

If opposing teams signs weren't so easy to decode the Astros wouldn't have been considered "cheaters".

If he goes out and has a 5+ War season he 100% is opting out, especially with no QO attached to him.

I think what he's trying to say is the signs from other teams were fairly easy to "crack". 

All teams were using video to pick up patterns and steal signs from other teams.  This allowed the guy on 2nd base to relay the sign to the batter (if he could see and pick up on it). 

The Astros just took it a large step further by picking up the signs from TV and relying that info to the batter.  Obviously that was easier when nobody was on-base and catchers weren't using as complicated sign sequencing.

Apparently with the money that's deferred he's getting 31.7M / year.  In the last 3 years he's put up 5.4, 4.5, and 4.1 WAR which according to Fangraphs is worth 43.1, 36.1, and 33M.
