Matthew Lenz Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated recently reported that Max Scherzer threw in front of many teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, both teams out of New York City, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Boston Red Sox. Notably, of that entire group, the Blue Jays are the only team mentioned to be "in contact" with the future Hall of Famer. Scherzer, who is now 40-years-old, threw less than 60 innings at the Triple-A and Major League levels in 2024. Although he fared fairly well in nine starts with the Rangers, it was spread across three different timeframes. He didn't debut until June 23rd due to an offseason surgery to fix a herniated disc in his back, then made his way back to the IL after eight starts due to right shoulder fatigue before being put back on the IL after just one start due to a left hamstring strain. After missing out on Roku Sasaki, the Blue Jays are still trying to bolster their rotation and Scherzer represents a good buy-low option despite a rough 2024. Do you think the Jays should take a chance on the three time Cy Young Award winner? View full rumor Spanky99 1
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Yes please. We'd probably be lucky to get 100 IP out of him, but I have no doubt they'd be high quality innings, and there is still upside there if he does stay healthy, despite his age.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 Would love to see Scherzer just for the dynamics between him and the front office. If we thought Chapman, Whit, Bassitt, etc. were "outspoken," this has the entertainment value of 100 written all over it lol. SuperBlackhawk, Spanky99, Stangstag and 1 other 3 1
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 An incentive laden contract would seem like the obvious way to go with a guy like Scherzer. Something like guaranteed $12M for one year with escalators as high as $2.5M each for 100, 125, 150, 175 IP. Just 125 IP would take him to $17M which is in line with his projected salary, but then again he's Max f***ing Scherzer so he can probably just get the 1/16 guaranteed or go wherever he wants if every team is offering similar contract structures such as this, which hurts our position. bronson44, Spanky99 and Terminator 3
