That's exactly how I feel about it.

I actually thought Toronto would have to pay a lot more to get Tony.  We've seemingly gotten Tony and Hoffman for reasonable deals so far.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day though...

The offseason is starting to actually look semi decent with this signing. I think the club added a win or two with the Gimenez acquisition depending on the bat, potentially added another win or so with each of Yimi and Hoffman depending on their ability to avoid major injury, and likely added 2.5 wins with the Santander addition. If they can manage to squeeze in rotation help and another bat I think that's a fantastic offseason, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is basically the last major addition.

Exciting to think the jays have a power hitter who can switch hit.  Feels like forever since the Jays had a switch hitter.  I realize he's kind of one dimensional player but I don't care because HR's.  Go get Alonso on a prove it -opt out deal

It's scary because the deal is underwater as soon as he loses anything offensively. There are no secondary skills, and the carrying skill (his bat) isn't good enough to make him an asset if it slips by even 10%.

Need I remind you of Vlady's bat the first half of last season.

Okay but on the negative side...

$100M to a dude who just hit .235/.308 and in his career has hit .246/.307

🙃

He is going to hit .220/.300 with 25 HR isn't he

Maybe Rogers doesn't like rejection so he went to atkins and shapiro and said f*** it, spend whatever you need just make sure you show the baseball world that we're not a bridesmaid?

This is not a “f*** it ball out” type of contract lol. It’s a compromise between the two parties, 5 years at a lower than projected AAV.

lol. yes sorry i meant as in overall payroll. We went from Shapiro saying payroll will be similar in 2025 to 2024 to now the Jays being in the second apron with Jays still being in on Alonso.

Alonso would probably push us or get us close to the 3rd apron.

Tony Taters is going to be fun as hell the next couple years. Switch hitter that hit 44 bombs last year. Sign me up for that.

The problem is there is no extra juice to his game. He provides no defense. No baserunning. Doesn't even provide OBP.

8.5 BB% is good. Less than 20% K%

I'm good with this.  If Santander opts out, then this means he's been raking for the Jays and this will have been a great signing.  An opt out after his age 32 season still seems somewhat unlikely..

It was reported that the opt out is after the third season which would be a fantastic outcome for the club.

Yeah his K and BB are solid. But for a 44 homer guy you'd expect more BB% out of a low BA guy.

It is still objectively funny that they traded Teo 2 years ago because they weren't interested in a FA contract for a bat only corner OF, and now they're signing a bat only corner OF for 92.5M.

I think the faster than expected decline from George Springer dramatically changed the overall outlook of the club. I think if you had any inkling that Springer would become a league average bat basically overnight things would have unfolded a lot differently.

Scott Mitchell (I think?) suggested that Teo was asking for something like 5/120 before they traded him. Not sure where the Jays valued him at the time, but knowing Atkins' recent fetish for players with low K%'s and lineup balance, he probably prefers Tony as this contract than whatever they could have agreed to with Teo.

Vlad had a bad first 4 weeks to start the season. His first half still saw him produce a 135 wRC+, and from April 28-end of season he was MLB's second best hitter behind Aaron Judge with an MVP level 181 wRC+.

This is certainly what some fans wanted.  They wanted us to add power.  We got our power hitting LFer and a closer.  Another bat another starter and let's see if the armchair GM's got it right.

We may not be that far away from a Santander, Alonso, Scherzer, Hoffman, Gimenez, Straw offseason if Rogers has lost their marbles and wants to burn cash and assets.

It would be incredible interesting for this board if that's how this offseason concluded.

Bookmarked... I kid I kid, but you're bang on. Finally got some thump(yay), if that came to fruition, an Alonso and Scherzer additions, this would be a funtastic fap worthy occasion.

Isn’t the same true for Vlad?? Except people want to give him 300 million for some reason

I'd give Vlad 300M all day?

Yeah that would actually feel entirely reasonable given where contracts for elite hitters have gone in recent seasons.

This is an A signing.  18.5M AAV with deferrals after coming off 44HRs is amazing value for a power deprived squad.  Most were thinking that a 5 year deal would come close to 110M without deferrals.

Santandar should be the upset one, earning only 13M more with deferrals than what Straw gets lol.

Now add Bregman on a similarly structured deal while getting the best/cheapest SP4/5 and this team is ready to roll.

Sign Bregman or Alonso, Scherzer and then trade a buffalo boy for a reliever.

WC3 will be easy to make.

After what we saw last year... I will accept that assuming we get to see some home runs again.  It's not only chicks who dig the long ball lol.
