IKF was coming off a 79 wRC+ season and got $15M guaranteed from Atkins. The Jays just absorbed nearly $100M of Gimenez's contract coming off an 83 wRC+ season.

I think the simple explanation is that Atkins wanted extra draft $ and is the only GM in the sport that would view Straw as an asset. Like, if the Jays signed MAT to 2/11, would anyone have been surprised? This is basically that.

Is it not as simple as acquiring 2M additional cash to try and convince Sasaki?

That's basically what I said and I was tarred and feathered for it

Ross is not a one dimensional thinker. He moves through time-space with a constant list of contingencies and secondary options in his head.

  1. Main reason to do the trade is to flash $2M more at Sasaki and/or prevent the Dodgers from doing so. Yeah, it was a longshot but maybe they thought it gave them a better chance and it was worth a punt.
  2. If #1 did not work out (or even if it did work out) perhaps they thought that Straw could still contribute as a stashable 4th OF type.
  3. If #1 did not work out, perhaps they thought they could find a way to spend the money on the international child labour market so the exercise was not a total loss.

What Ross quite obviously DID NOT think about was that he would be tarred and feathered by Mike Wilner. There is no recovery from that.

Well I mean of course he had a contingency plan in the extremely predictable event they didn’t sign him

But would he have made this move if they weren’t a finalist for Sasaki? Likely not

Cito came out ahead years ago after being relentlessly slagged by Wilner years ago, but Wilner was basically a Blue Jays employee at the time so it's not a true apples to apples comparison.

Honestly, I haven't seen anyone tarred and feathered like that since.... well...  just about everyday here for Jaysblue.

Agreed. It was also early in our contention window - whereas 2015 was at the end of AA's window.  Different strategies would be expected and that's what we saw.

2015 was so awesome because we hadn't had any playoff baseball in decades.  But they ultimately came up short too.

Also the Jays picked up Hand and Soria, they tried in '21, he was the next best reliever available after Kimbrel went to the Chisox, s*** happens.

2 million in bonus pool money on Jan. 16 has nowhere near the value of the 46th pick because 100s of players are already committed or signed by that point.

They also have 11 months to use that money, popup guys get signed every year. Mind you this process was a fail.

It looks like Manny Cedeno, Ayden Johnson, Jhoan De La Cruz, Cristopher Polanco, Carlos Taveras, Deivid Coronil, Carlos Alvarez are still not signed from MLB's top 50 list.

Polanco was already a guy rumored as signing with the Jays. It's possible they use the extra to try and snag one or two of those other guys. It's use it or lose it, so they may as well back the extra truck up one someone.

Most of these guys are committed though, if not all of them.

Considering that Wilner has turned on old Ross, kind of makes me want to pull for Atkins even more.  Yes, Wilner is that unlikeable.

  • Keegan Matheson just said that Myles Straw was the best trade of the offseason in MLB, lmao on Overdrive.

And this is why they have not felt the pressure for long, they are buttered by their own owners  media

How is that even possible? Do you have some sort of available context to explain this statement?

Thanks for the compliment!

Obviously because he gambled and lost on Sasaki.

You seem pretty smart yourself, so I'm surprised you're having trouble coping with having the worst GM in MLB run your team.

Are you capable of making a single post without a massive exaggeration thrown in for good measure? I get the feeling I'm on this ignoramus'es ignore list but that just leaves me free to take pot shots as wanted at his expense with no chance to retort so it feels like a guaranteed win each time.

He said it was the best trade for Cleveland and practically humiliated the Jays front office for it lol.

Ah I was looking at it from a Blue Jays perspective instead of considering the opposing view.
