glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 IKF was coming off a 79 wRC+ season and got $15M guaranteed from Atkins. The Jays just absorbed nearly $100M of Gimenez's contract coming off an 83 wRC+ season. I think the simple explanation is that Atkins wanted extra draft $ and is the only GM in the sport that would view Straw as an asset. Like, if the Jays signed MAT to 2/11, would anyone have been surprised? This is basically that. Delete_My_Account_Thanks 1

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Ross is not a one dimensional thinker. He moves through time-space with a constant list of contingencies and secondary options in his head. Main reason to do the trade is to flash $2M more at Sasaki and/or prevent the Dodgers from doing so. Yeah, it was a longshot but maybe they thought it gave them a better chance and it was worth a punt. If #1 did not work out (or even if it did work out) perhaps they thought that Straw could still contribute as a stashable 4th OF type. If #1 did not work out, perhaps they thought they could find a way to spend the money on the international child labour market so the exercise was not a total loss. What Ross quite obviously DID NOT think about was that he would be tarred and feathered by Mike Wilner. There is no recovery from that. wilko, BatFlip and Spanky99 3
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2025 Posted January 20, 2025 Well I mean of course he had a contingency plan in the extremely predictable event they didn’t sign him But would he have made this move if they weren’t a finalist for Sasaki? Likely not

Cito came out ahead years ago after being relentlessly slagged by Wilner years ago, but Wilner was basically a Blue Jays employee at the time so it's not a true apples to apples comparison.

It was also early in our contention window - whereas 2015 was at the end of AA's window. Different strategies would be expected and that's what we saw. 2015 was so awesome because we hadn't had any playoff baseball in decades. But they ultimately came up short too. Also the Jays picked up Hand and Soria, they tried in '21, he was the next best reliever available after Kimbrel went to the Chisox, s*** happens.

They also have 11 months to use that money, popup guys get signed every year. Mind you this process was a fail.

Polanco was already a guy rumored as signing with the Jays. It's possible they use the extra to try and snag one or two of those other guys. It's use it or lose it, so they may as well back the extra truck up one someone. Most of these guys are committed though, if not all of them.
