I think Alonso and Vlad have a symbiotic relationship. The Mets would prefer Vlad. If the Jays can't/don't sign Vlad, the Jays trade to Mets and Toronto signs Pete.

Santander and Alonso project about the same and are similar players.

If Vlad is in the fold for 2025, and he probably will be, Santander might make more sense as a DH/LF who bats from both sides over Alonso as a DH/1B who hits righty.

Wow I was sure that Alonso would stay with the Mets, but if it's true that the Mets have moved on, then it's hard to see a fit for Pete. The Jays might be able to swoop in here. Although if Pete wants a multiple opt out short term deal like all Boras clients want, then not sure if Shapiro goes there.

Whats the draft pick/IFA money the Jays lose by signing someone attached to a QO?

I can't see the Jays signing a deal for 1 year with 2 player options and forking over the penalty. There would have to be some upside/incentive built into that contract I would think.

An Alonso signing on its own prior to a Vlad trade would kind of be putting the cart before the horse right? It more or less signals the end of Vlad's tenure here, but if that deal isn't completed then it kind of hurts our leverage since teams would more or less know we have to get rid of him. Unless, we just sign Pete to be a 1B/DH partner with Vlad? Both Alonso and Vlad might genuinely gain defensive value by not ever taking the field.
