G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2025 Posted June 25, 2025 How many pitches are we realistically hoping from for Scherzer tonight?
Masterbather Verified Member Posted June 25, 2025 Posted June 25, 2025 Turnbull DFA'd. Hardly knew ya.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2025 Posted June 25, 2025 I liked the Turnbull signing but he just has no stuff anymore.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2025 Posted June 25, 2025 Turnbull looked awful so probably good idea to cut bait. Hopefully they do the same with Green when Garcia is ready. The pen does need a long man, though. If Scherzer leaves in the 1st inning tonight due to injury or something, then it would be Schneider's dream (getting to use every RP for an inning) but not ideal at all. Gotta hope Scherzer can chew up 5 at least, and then stay healthy after that.

Assuming that neither of them are needed for rotation duties, I suspect that Macko and Kloffenstein could eventually be long man options at some point this season. Spanky__99 1

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2025 Posted June 25, 2025 I feel like this is very abrupt on Turnbull. No he didn't look great but he missed a lot of time and its difficult to turn it up that fast. They went through the whole process of building him up to bail on him after 3 appearances? They must have really felt he was cooked.

To me it looks like he's at the point where if he is to continue his career it's either going to be on a bottom-dwelling team that just needs any warm body it can find... or a minor league deal. From the looks of his stuff, he's just not an MLB caliber pitcher at this point. He's the shade of a shade of his former self, which is sad.

If the jays are going to make a serious effort for a playoff spot then there is no way those guys should be on the roster. Both guys are walking over 5 guys per 9 in AAA. Macko maybe you give a shot if you are in a pinch and playing the options game but Kloff numbers are just awful all around.

When you start to get to your 8th depth starter options and beyond beggars can't be choosers.

Trade for someone like Jake Junis or Steven Matz. Both have shown to be effective in long relief roles/spot starters. Also, even in an emergency they can be used in a high leverage spot if the team is desperate and short arms.

His xwOBA is actually higher than last year so maybe once the weather heats up some of his flyballs will turn into HR. This is purely anecdotal but I feel Rogers Centre hurts him a bit as some of his hard hit fly balls are so hard he turns doubles into singles. If you put him in place like Comerica with a giant OF he would have a lot more extra base hits. The most frustrating part about him is everyone can see how talented he is and knows that he could be a Pujols/Miggy type but that for whatever reason he still can't figure out how to hit the ball in the air more. Obviously easier said than done and maybe he's tried to do that which then screws his swing up entirely and maybe we just have to accept him as a guy who is a .300 hitter with 25-30 HR and not a 40HR guy. You guys are pretty insufferable about Vlad. His stable almost 140 wRC+ in the 3 hole can’t be discounted as a major part of the Jays success, other than guys that count WAR and nothing else. Of course it’s not the perfect scenario but how has he hurt the team one bit when they’re in the position they are, idk. Meanwhile the “huge” acquisitions of Santander and Giminez have been a failure of epic proportions and its easy to see how the team could be better making different moves there. Also, to say he wouldn’t get $400m if the season ended today is your opinion, and a very bad one. Again, you’re one of the people here that absolutely refuse to acknowledge the great cost teams will pay seeking an elite offensive talent. SF just took on Devers $300m contract, knowing he’s a DH with lesser demonstrated success and a lesser ceiling than Vlad AND paid a legit price for the privilege . A MLB ready SP that had real promise and their #13 pick that started AA in Boston pretty well. Wow is your opinion objectively wrong.

I find it highly unlikely their exercising those thoughts at this point in the season.

I didn’t mean that it would make one attack his character, but make them lose overall objectivity on assessing him. Hes making $28m and producing. Stop worrying about his $500m. Put a tampon in and worry about your $200m AAA Ross additions

Put a tampon in and worry about your $200m AAA Ross additions I see. But people have every right to be frustrated because the talent is clearly there to be great and it always comes in flashes. Besides we have every right to worry about the contract if it comes back to hurt this team's ability to compete. I don't care how much ownership spends, I want them to spend as much as possible, I do care if how they spend their money hamstrings the team. Especially for those who felt that trading him for other assets and using the money elsewhere was a better overall move. Besides, worrying about that does not preclude us worrying about any other poor investments. We have the ability to bitch about multiple things at the same time after all.
