Sasaki would be a miracle that would round out the pitching staff really nicely, then yeah, bring in a bat.

If they can do it sure, I certainly wouldn't be upset. Doesn't seem likely though. Not with the way things have gone the last two off seasons.

Obviously yes the team needs bats, but if money was available and you had to choose between Pivetta or Scott, who would you take?

Was curious if the Jays had budget to add one more piece on the pitching side (which they still might), would people prefer Pivetta or Scott.

There's obviously a big game of chicken being played by those 2 players.  I definitely want Santander, but now is the time to go get JD Martinez.   He got 1 and 12 last year.  He missed training camp because he waited so long.  What's he going to cost 1 and 8?  1 and 9?  I'm sure he doesn't want to go through what he did last year. He's a no brainer.

Problem with JDM is he sucks. I think I'd rather just play Davis Schneider or whatever.

Was just pondering after the Jeff Hoffman signing, maybe the price of BP arms has dropped in comparison to at the beginning of the offseason. We know the Jays need another starter, but would they be better off going after Tanner Scott if he comes in around the same AAV as Hoffman or a bit more rather than paying the price we've seen for mid-rotation starters this offseason? Could be a better way at spending money to add overall WAR on the pitching side. 

Agreed, would prefer the Jays to go after a big bat like Alonso or Santander with the remaining money they have.

Look at his batted ball profile and consider he missed training camp.  He's also a guy you're probably going give a lot of rest too so he plays 130ish games.  He was still had an OPS+ of 106.  I'd say the odds of him having an OPS north of .800 are around 50%.  He's a 1 year 8 mil gamble.  I'd put his floor around where it was last year.  A 1 year 8 mil deal isn't going to prevent us from getting Santander.  Now imagine having Vlad, Santander and JD all with an OPS of .800 or better in the lineup.

If JDM sucks next year 1 year 8 mil commitment isn't going to prevent you from playing someone else.  It a small enough contract that you can say we rolled the dice and lost and you can DFA him.

True in theory but Vogelbach projected similarly last year and was much cheaper and he was still a roadblock in front of Horwitz for too long.

Vogelbach isn't anywhere close to the hitter JD Martinez was in his career and given Vogelbach's body size that adds 6 or 7 years to his aging curve.  Seriously, JD is an extremely intelligent hitter.  He's known for being a highly intelligent hitter.  If I'm a GM with my job on the line I'm betting on Martinez as my DH for 130 games, not rotating a bunch of kids through that position.

Dude he's like 38 and was just about replacement level last year and projects to be replacement level 

He MIGHT bounce back but I'd honestly just sign Justin Turner again if he are bringing in a crusty veteran

Dude, he's 37 and you put way too much stock into Steamer projections. We scored 671 runs last year.  Our offense is worse today than it was last year.  I don't give a flying f*** about positional FWAR adjustments.  JD Martinez will not cost the Jays a single run defensively playing as a DH.  The fact that you think Giminez will have a higher OPS than JD is laughable.  I'll take the over on the .715 OPS Steamer is projecting for JD Martinez.  Care to make a friendly wager.  If I win, you stop posting for 6 months.  If I lose, I'll stop posting for 6 months.

I bet they'll be able to find a league average or better batter (Will Wagner, etc.) for the league minimum, which is way better than dropping whatever it takes to sign JDM to his age 38 season.   They need to be aiming higher.

He's 37 FFS and Martinez probably signs a 1 year deal.  JD is your secondary bat.  I could even be talked into Grichuk as your secondary bat who would be the same salary if you guys are hell bent on your old person bias.  So Grichuk or Martinez and Santander.  This team needs 2 bats.  If it was me I'd trade for Yelich and sign Grichuk/Martinez, but that would be an insanely ballsy move taking on a massive amount of injury risk.

Father time is undefeated my friend.  He eventually comes for everyone and JD is on borrowed time.

I don't mind Grichuk - if you protect him and put him in the right platoon role against leftys.

I find it hilarious that this is the board makes fun of casual fans that don't understand advanced stats and then they completely ignore advanced stats for old people.  Seriously as an old person, I'm offended.  It's elder abuse.  This is the statcast page of an old man who entirely missed training camp.  I'll bet on the old guy who can have a normal spring.

The Jays need 2 batters to push Springer to the 5 hole.  JDM or Grichuk do not fit that category and would only be great if we added as our 3rd big bat addition this off-season.  

Not sure if it's even realistic to expect that but that's what it's going to take to shut me up offensively.

FWIW, I do think there's a decent chance that JDM has one last dead cat bounce in him.  He could add some much needed power (unlike a guy like Turner).
