Wild changes with the Mets rotation in recent weeks

They call up McLean and Tong, who look amazing. 
They are calling up Brandon Sproat to make his MLB debut Sunday. 

They just optioned Kodai Senga with his 3.02 ERA. 

That is a viciously aggressive youth movement for this time of year!

That is one wild ride.  Obviously it seems unsustainable and it looks like he might be a bust after dominating the lower minors...

it's not a satisfying answer but the answer is that it's only been 200 PAs.

free swinging pulled flyball guys that whiff a lot tend to naturally have a lot more variance in their game (think of how PCA has dropped off over the last 2 months). the denominator of total batted balls is just going to be smaller b/c of the whiffs, & the batted balls they do hit (flyballs) are naturally going to XBHs or outs. if they're having a bad month, they'll be outs, if they're having a good month, they'll be off the wall or over the fence.

the best pulled flyball hitters like lindor & jose ramirez are the best at what they do because they're able to have high pulled flyball rates while also making a ton of contact. guys like montgomery / PCA / matt wallner (my montgomery comp) will usually rate out as above average hitters over a large sample, but it'll come with a lot more variance

Yamamoto, up 3-0, and one out away from a no hitter, loses it on a home run and then his bullpen loses the game against Baltimore by allowing the next five batters to reach.

s***, that's probably one of the more painful losses of the season by any team.

What's really crazy is that home run by Jackson was catchable. Was it Pages? He pulls up early on a ball that barely cleared the wall. That's like a 7-8-ft wall? If he runs through and jumps he absolutely gets glove on it. 

Not the kind of effort you expect with a no-hitter on the line. Especially painful given how it ended.

yea Pages, his dee has come along way but he's never been one to go up and catch a ball against or over the wall,

Maybe that's why the Dodgers are underperforming? Bit of a divided clubhouse, top many individuals not as much of a team unit

It's wild.  Scott has always been essentially unhittable - it was walks that would get him in trouble.  But this year, he's got the lowest BB% of his career, but is now serving up home runs like Hoffman.  He went from <0.4 HR/9 rates in 2023 and 2024 to 1.82 this year.

yep he should be unhittable

the dodgers love the fastball, I bet he's throwing more fastballs, less breaking balls.  could explain the above(?)

That one still stings. I think Ohtani's presence alone last season could have been sufficient to push the team close to contending for a wild card spot.

You have to wonder if they have too many individuals in the Front Office as well

They have 100s of people working in Baseball Ops. At a certain point you would have to wonder if their top voices aren't always cutting through what could be a bloated and bureaucratic mess of a front office.

I only see, Texas as the biggest threat to steal the last WC spot, maybe KC as well as those 2 ball-clubs have been playing really well.

With 2 HRs last night, Teo raises his season wRC+ to 94.  It will be interesting to see if he can turn it around next year.  Sad - love me some Teo, but I think there were signs a dropoff could happen in his early 30's.
