Rays RHP Hunter Bigge just took a hard foul ball to the head while in the Rays dugout. He was down several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher with his neck stabilized. He gave a thumbs up on his way off, which is always reassuring

I was just tuning into this game to watch Morton, wonder why he was in the dugout instead of the pen (he's on the IL)

(watching it now)

...thumbs up is a good sign

Good the Rays lost last night even though they cost me my parlay with the Phillies haha.

Yankees ended their 6 game losing streak so they gain a game on both the Jays and Rays.

Hope the Jays can sweep the White Sox at home this weekend!

LA/SD series 8 HBP with 3 yesterday including Tatis and Ohtani; Tatis got it in the hand and benches cleared including coaches going at it.  They meet again in August - these teams hate each other

Yet according to Muncy the Padres are not a rival to the Dodgers.

Fractured rib cage for Chris Sale. The Braves are going through it

Happened in the 9th inning geez and they were up 5-0. He was already up to 116 pitches which is stupid management.

Gotta hope he returns after the All-Star Break but rib cage injuries can take a lot of time.

Google AI suggests as many as 3 months in pitchers for rib fractures to heal so that could very well be it for Sale's season. I just don't know why a team would push their star pitcher so high in pitch count in a lopsided game, especially given Sale's rather extensive injury history. This was a bit more of an unpredictable injury due to the diving stop but the point still remains.

I supposed that pretty much puts any chance of Sale being traded at the deadline completely to rest, especially with AA stating that he had no intention of trading Sale in the first place.

Very dumb SP management. Comical in 2025. It wasn't an arm injury but still no reason for him to be out there

Yeah Brian Snitker is incompetent. There was no reason for him to be out there given the score and at that pitch count to begin with.

Yeah agreed, given the circumstances and Sale's injury history, no need to push him that much to begin with in a 5-0 game and at that pitch count. Snitker is an idiot.

Yeah possibly Sale is out for the remainder of the season which is a huge blow. Even for Chris Sale himself since he's a borderline Hall of Famer and needs a couple more elite seasons to guarantee him a spot.

To be fair, that injury had nothing to do with pitch count.  It could have just as easily happened on the first pitch of the next game.

That is true but I do think that there was no real need for Sale to still be in this game at that point given the score and workload he already undertaken. I can only guess that the manager was trying to allow Sale to pick up a shutout, rest the bullpen or something of that sort.

John Schneider takes a lot of flak for pulling his veteran starters with their pitch counts in the 90's vs pushing them deeper into games, and I think being a little more cautious with a bit earlier pulls is a far more prudent decision with regards to injury avoidance, even if the injury happens on a fielding play vs being directly tied into an extended outing with high pitch count.

Yeah, but still there is no reason he should be out there given the score and high pitch count to begin with, let alone his age and injury history. Even have to consider freak injuries.

To be fair, I believe Sale was trying for his first shutout in like 7 years or something. There's probably a good chance that he asked for the opportunity.

Yes, the manager has to use his judgement and can overrule a vet, but there is trust and respect and lots of other factors involved.

It was a freak injury.  It happens.  Bad things can happen without them being someones fault.

Didnt he have a rib cage stress fracture a few years ago when he was in Boston?

If Sale asked for a chance to complete a shutout and was denied he's probably have a nuclear level of tantrum. I recall a previous time when he was scheduled to pitch and didn't like the team's special uniform for the day so he cut them up so they couldn't be used. Or how about the time when he had a bad outing in the minor leagues on a rehab assignment and selfishly destroyed the minor league team's clubhouse.

Yes, there was quite a bit of coverage when the game happened (before injury was known) where Sale thanked Snitker for giving him the chance at the shutout.

Reds DFA Jeimer Candelario half way through his $45M deal.

What a f*cking mess they are.  McLain, Steer and Encarnacion all can't hit now either.  Espinal continues to start for them?  Gross.

I'm going to see the Reds v. Padres on Friday.  At least Elly doesn't blow.

McLain and Steer have started to come around with the bats. Encarnacion still shaking off some rust from his long layoff.

Enjoy Petco Park! One of my favourite ballparks and right in the Gaslamp Quarter which is a really cool area! A lot of away teams stay at the Omni right next door. Back in 2015, saw Mike Matheny on the bar patio with his laptop and bumped into Mark Reynolds at a Starbucks haha.

I wish I was in SD.  I'm in Cincinnati at my kids Perfect Game baseball tournament.  We're bringing the whole family and catching a Reds game (we're so busy with ball/sports that this qualifies as the family vacation).  I've been to Great American Ball Park before, but it will be the first time for the kids.  We'll make the best of it.

I think they don't care - maybe accepted that ABS is on the way and can't be bothered to improve

I'm watching Yankees at Reds right now and this was called a ball.  Laughable

"Buehler lives up to his name in this inning"  the Angels announcer. Would have been even better if he followed that up with "Buehler, Buehler, Buehler......"  lol

1st inning, 4 walks, 2 with the bases loaded and a HBP.  5 Runs

This isn’t breaking news but Big Dumper is on pace for 10 WAR behind the dish

Insane season. He might hit 60 at Safeco
