Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) I wouldn’t be surprised if Vladdy is asking for a total that matches Soto or higher. If he changed his ask after Ohtani was sign and after Soto signed he might be wanting same as these guys. Would be in line with his thinking that he’s the “best in the world”. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40994113/vlad-guerrero-jr-blue-jays-resurgence I was told it was 10/400+ and they were waiting for the Alonso and Soto contracts to play out as a barometer. If Vlad says he wants 10/400 and will sign today(in that Vlad interview) the Jays should either sign him at that number or trade him. As Stang said it's time to piss or get off the pot, this team needs direction soon. Oops... it says that number went up after the Soto signing(missed that), so there goes that actually. They need to figure this out pronto after the Alonso signing. A trade makes the most sense. Edited December 24, 2024 by Spanky99
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 That was great, rarely missed it. I certainly liked JP's transparency... "it's not a lie if we know the truth" Ross is a weiner. His rant about Adam Dunn was hilarious as well. “Do you know the guy (Adam Dunn) doesn't even like baseball all that much?” haha

I was just curious tbh. The Jays chat on that site is pretty good actually, even though it's a hockey site there are a ton of sub forum chats.

There is no need to out me as a Maple Leafs fan here, Canucks fan. I just want to chat baseball and not hockey on here. You have fun with JT Miller and Pettersson hating each other, and I will have fun with 0 cups since 67.

Peace ok? Wanting to chat baseball instead of hockey is a perfectly good reason for the change in user name. I was legit just curious. Holy ****...lol. Everyone needs to take their 8's to a 3 please.

I will jokingly point that I full on said that I was on the ML's page and was only interested in the Blue jays talk. I give negative zero ****s about your hockey team and your opinions on it. 🤣😇 We can talk baseball. A lot of the focus on where the team is at in its competition cycle has focused on the players that are aging and might not perform to their contracts. The biggest failure of this regime is the talent pipeline that was insinuated after investing in the Dunedin complex. We drafted a **** ton of players that were supposedly going to flood the minors with talent that would supplant the dudes on the roster that were nearing the end of their contracts. Over-paid hits the bench, new talent hits the field. This is where the plan failed for Ross and crew. The changes in mgmt this off-season have not significantly reflected the failures of the succession plan implemented 3 or 4 years ago.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Just food for thought. Bobby Whitt jr signed a contract in 2024 for 11/$288m ~. Vlad wants $400 plus/$500m~ I would rather have Whitt every day and twice Sunday and for half the price. Trade Vlad for some specs/players that will aggregate to Witt.

Pre arb eligible player vs pending free agent Is the difference in ability to demand certain $$ But the value difference is much more in favour of Whitt for sure
Nexii Verified Member Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Yea Whitt would have gotten about the same as Vlad in free agency. He hedged his risk with some player options as well

Geez... who wouldn't lol... they locked him up pre-arb though, I guess we can say they waited too long on Vlad. Dude's now a pending FA those scenarios are much different. I believe Witt JR might opt out after his age 30 season and beat that AAV and term if he continues to stay a perennial MVP beast. I'm uncomfortable with that type of money, the Jays best piss or get off the pot, seriously. I feel like there's no direction with this club now.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Any relations with this fella to Ernie Whitt?
Nexii Verified Member Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 I'd be fine with 15/500 as well. The Jays are a big market team and should start acting like it. They don't need to penny pinch every dollar. Since when do the Yankees or Dodgers do a complete rebuild? Never, they just spend on FAs and finish at least .500.

You want to lock Vlad in until he is 41!??? This is a guy who has weight/conditioning issues in his early 20s. Prince Fielder was out of baseball at like 32…
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2024 Posted December 25, 2024 Any relations with this fella to Ernie Whitt? No, just to a poster who can’t spell Witt’s name properly because he grew up with Ernie Whitt… My bad…

Prince Fielder was out of baseball at like 32… Fielder suffered a neck injury that ruined his career, and we always much rounder than Vlad was even at his worst. I do agree however that 1B types haven't experienced the most gradual of aging curves among the heavyset crowd.

Both Vlad and Prince started behind the curve. We have had the debate here multiple times as to the root cause of Prince’s neck issues. All the medical research I saw on it had weight as a causative or contributing factor.

That's nice, but it's not like this is some common issue that Vlad is "likely" to suffer from as well because he's overweight...the increased likelihood of Vlad suffering the same issue (as Fielder) over a skinny player is probably like 1.5%.

It doesn’t have to be that exact issue. Weight is an issue to a 30 yr plus ~ athlete who’s really sole value is derived from his ability to violently torque his body consistently and catch up with 95 mph ~ pitches. When you make an investment in anything, you need to assess ROI and risk. Vlad is a much riskier proposition to me and obviously others than a comparable athlete in peak physical condition.

Again, this is incorrect, not with cervical degeneration, it more has to do with the canal that runs through your spine, weight rarely ever is the reason, lumbar degeneration issues are mostly due to weight, however.

Prince Fielder was out of baseball at like 32… David Ortiz' OPS in his age 36 season 1.026. Age 37 .959. Age 38 .873 Age 39 .913 Age 40 1.021 Ortiz had over 600 plate appearances in each of his last 4 seasons. Last time I checked Ortiz always looked like he never missed a trip to the buffet table when he played.

Again… Weight May Affect Cervical Disc Degeneration Indirectly including the cervical or neck portion of the spine…that does not have to do with the spine supporting body weight, or the biomechanics of the spine. It has to do with the affect obesity has on the metabolic state of the body, and inflammation.

I would say he is more an outlier. If you are making an investment decision, weight/body type is a huge risk factor. Just the fact of the most likely outcome for a pro hitter.

And I'm saying it's rarely an issue to that particular injury, my surgeon told me the resulting factors are wear and tear in like 90% of his clients, Dr. Michael Ford at Sunnybrook Hospital best surgeon in Canada. I agree that fatties don't age well, I just find it hardly likely that Prince's career ended because of his weight, it's a serious injury dude. David Wright's career ended short because of the same injury, was his because of weight? Nope.
