hanton Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Kirk knew if he threw behind Duran he might take 3rd so he double pumped and then fired it to 2nd. Great play. Skill.

Duran is a great player but unbelievably stupid on the bases. Kinda like Elly DLC but they both have elite speed that makes up for most of the brainfarts.

Im debating whether or not to make the trip downtown to catch a final game before the season ends. I’ve only been to a couple this year, normally go see 10+. Would like to get out one more time but the weather has been awful, not sure if its worth it.

Both are extremely aggressive, but you take all the good with some of the bad. A downside of being aggressive is sometimes these guys will try to force the issue to gain an extra base, which they're used to doing, and get caught looking foolish, but more often than not they'll gain you a lot of extra bases and force errors from the defense winning you runs. There's a reason they're both in the top 5 of value added via baserunning.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Hard to argue with +7 BsR Duran does have a reputation for having horrible baseball instincts, he was a god awful defender up until this season so I bet he does make (or used to make) a lot of stupid baserunning errors

A very stupid and risky play, normally he should be out but he got lucky and it’s praised as a “smart” play. I just dislike when players are rewarded from stupid baserunning, which happens a lot with guys like Elly and Duran because of elite speed. Its Vladdy brain but with faster legs.

I hear what you're saying....but elite speed moves the bar. A stupid baserunning decision by an average runner isn't stupid for an elite runner. I also think you want those guys living on the verge of of being reckless.

I just dislike when players are rewarded from stupid baserunning, which happens a lot with guys like Elly and Duran because of elite speed. Its Vladdy brain but with faster legs. I guess the question is, is it stupid for guys like Duran and EDLC when they succeed at it most of the time? Maybe if Vladdy had 90th percentile speed his absolutely horrendous baserunning mistakes would work a lot more often and we would think of him as an exciting runner. But then the flip side is someone like Teoscar Hernandez, consistently around the ~85th percentile in sprint speed his whole career, but sitting at a -1 in value added on the bases his entire career. Randy Arozarena is another example, in a more extreme version of a guy who is aggressive all the time but it's never worth the risk he puts himself into. You want guys like that to be aggressive, steal extra bases with their speed, as long as they have the IQ and instincts to prove it worthwhile. If it was as simple as speed covering up your deficiencies, Teoscar and Randy would be providing lots of baserunning value. Duran and ELDC combine speed, hustle, and just enough risk that it pays off for them to make "bad" baserunning decisions for most players.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 2024 fWAR Kirk 2.6 Moreno 2.4 Jansen 0.5 It was already apparent in recent seasons that Kirk had morphed into an elite defender behind the plate, but I didn't expect him to develop into one of the elite throwing catchers in the sport seemingly overnight. He's ranked second overall in MLB in throwing runs by DRS and 4th by OAA.

Maybe that's part of why he hadn't been hitting as well, he's been focusing on the defensive side of things. It would be nice if he can become more consistent on the offensive end. He has it in him and could be a top 2 or 3 catcher in the league.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Nathan Lukes spray chart (64 AB's). If he ever lengthens his swing he might hit a few over
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Who the f is Easton Lucas, and why couldn't they just call up Pardinho or Danner or someone like that instead? It's likely all those guys stink but I know which pitchers I'd prefer watching in these meaningless games.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Maybe we should abandon relievers all together. Sign 10 starters and piggyback them.
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Could be the worst jays bullpen ever. . Nance, burr , pop don't deserve a spot next year.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Could be the worst jays bullpen ever. . Nance, burr , pop don't deserve a spot next year. Burr has been really good bro
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Kirk made an excellent play in the 10th on that s***** Clement throw
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Kirk made an excellent play in the 10th on that s***** Clement throw Clements defense is very suspect. Lots of opportunities missed tonight for him to stop the bleeding and he couldn't. Not errors...but plays that need to be made.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Could be the worst jays bullpen ever. . Nance, burr , pop don't deserve a spot next year. I think this is the first time in the last 30+ years that our pen has put up negative WAR - and it's a fairly substantial negative at that.
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Burr has been really good bro Not in the last few games he hasn't been
Masterbather Verified Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 I wouldn't be bothered by seeing none of our bullpen back, except Yarbrough.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 This team staaaaaanks lol. Tank for #1
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Author Posted September 25, 2024 Nice to see Bowden continue to pitch well.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Could be the worst jays bullpen ever. . Nance, burr , pop don't deserve a spot next year. Ryan Burr: 12.91 K/9, 3.52 ERA, 2.84 FIP and 0.5 WAR with 44 K's in 30.2 innings. He's been pretty darn good. I think Burr definitely deserves a look next season and is looking like he could be a very nice BP piece.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 I wouldn't be bothered by seeing none of our bullpen back, except Yarbrough. Green, Swanson and Romano are likely back. Just hope this FO doesn't put all their eggs in one basket by relying on them as the main guys like before. I could see Burr returning. Yarbrough is a FA, but as a long man he could be alright. Just a low K/9 so I think the Jays could aim higher.
