John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 (edited) He had great spring trainings. No gem but not about getting a fair shot, he got no shot at all. Just like, Barger, Horowitz and Clement may not have got a shot if we didn't s*** the bed. Lukes ceiling is a 4th OF. He has virtually no useable power. 2300 PAs in the minors and just over 40 HRs. He's not a guy to worry about. Just look at his minor league track record and it's not a big revelation as to why he's never got a shot. At age appropriate levels in the upper minors he's been an average hitter with no pop. Age 22 at AA...wRC + of 101 with an ISO of .095 Age 23 at AA, improved to a whopping 107 wRC+, ISO .122 24, AAA, 57 wRC+, ISO 100. That was 2019, 2020 wiped out by COVID. 2021, Now 26, back at AAA, 115 wRC+, ISO .153. Literally nothing to be excited about. This is when he dumped by the Rays. Jays grabbed him for 2022, AAA, 27...111 and .140 Pure vanilla. Edited September 1, 2024 by John_Havok
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 A lot of you guys need to relax and temper your expectations with some of these callups. It's like everyone is starting to pencil them into the starting lineup in 2025 and beyond after a month or two of ABs. You can't fall in love with these guys and think they're all going to be key everyday players moving forward. Look at Davis Schneider last season for example. Out of all the guys who have been called up this season, Horwitz should be the only one given a spot in the starting lineup at 2B, and possibly Ernie Clement at 3B if the Jays decide they want to save some money at the hot corner. Otherwise, all these other guys heading into 2025 should be bench pieces or in AAA for depth if the Jays expect to contend.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Why are we talking about Nathan Lukes? FFS!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 I guess you don't really need a minor league system when you are a free agency / trade wizard like Ross. Just pull guys like Ernie and Willy Wags out of your ass when needed... and Bowden... Yeah who needs a top farm system! Overrated if you ask me! Give Ross the money to spend $20M on another vet starter and another $20-30M to sign two power bats this offseason. Nothing beats having an aging $100M rotation filled with a bunch of mid-rotation starters! Requires a lot of skill and high baseball IQ! That's why we're paying Ross the big bucks!

And let's not forget about Orelvis. They still need to fill out the top of the lineup though. Need Bo to bounce back (if not traded) amd a near Vlad equivalent or better up there. There's none of those in house. Right now the lineup has 1 feared hitter and a lot of good enough to get by. I really hope August Horwitz shows up for 2025, that would be ideal. Power actually surfaced.

I would think two of Horwitz/Clement/Wagner have a decent shot at contributing next year. There is way too much "average to slightly above average hitter" / "low value defensive position or poor defender" depth in the org right now. Rather than stocking two or three of these guys in AAA for depth and watch them age out of any future potential upside that another org may see, we should probably be moving one or two of these guys for some relief pitching (or maybe a hitter on a fair value contract as a pseudo salary dump).
TimInBC Verified Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Quite a lineup today. If I remember right, the only one of the nine who was even with the team a year ago is Clement, and he was probably riding the pine. And here they are up 1-0.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 What happened to YRod only going three innings?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Benching Wagner after a 5-hit game is inexplicable.
Delgalladay Verified Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Found a way to lose. Story of the season.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Not sure why they kept calling sliders...he'd alreafy whiffed on the high inside fastball a few pitches earlier. Should have gone back there
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Way to jinx Chad green saying how solid he's been this year
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 What happened to YRod only going three innings? My guess is he's really close to his innings limit. Remember he didn't pitch at all last year. Up to 88.2 IP now this season. Probaby have him scheduled for around 100 IP, 4 starts left with regular rotation...so, probably 3 IP each for his last few starts
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 That de los santos throwing error was huge

Let's hope to God he doesn't throw 101 lest his arm explode.

If the Jays are going to contend in 2025 and 2026, than we're going to have to rely on the young call-ups. If they all turn out to be AAAA bums, then there's no way we'll contend and should just tear it all down now. Good news is the shear volume of call-ups gives us a solid probability of having a couple of starters (or at least platoon starters) and a couple of good backups amongst them. We really need to have some solid, young, cheap and controlled position players on this team.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 Yes the completely unproven nonsense of innings limits. Let's hope to God he doesn't throw 101 lest his arm explode. It's not based on nonsense. Just like you saw them pull Francis in his last start, likely because of his dip in velocity and his own admitted fatigue. The same is probably true for Yariel who averaged 94.7 mph on the 4 seamer in June, but only averaged 93.6 in August. Fatigue for a guy who didn't throw a single competitive pitch in 2023 other than the WBC is a virtual certainty. If you want to quibble over calling it an "innings limit" vs a "he's clearly fatiguing at this point so maybe we should back off slightly since a tired arm is far more injury prone than a healthy arm" fact of his circumstance...sure.
