Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Bregman seems like the guy they could overpay if that’s what you’re asking.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Ross will overpay for Alonso and shift Vladdy to third base primarily.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Ross will overpay for Alonso and shift Vladdy to third base primarily. All-in run prevention strategy followed by sudden 180 degree turn
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 All-in run prevention strategy followed by sudden 180 degree turn It's looking that way. What other owners in their right minds would allow such a pivot after nine years of basically nothing with a top tier payroll? Something just doesn't add up.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I hear Juan Soto is good Too good for this organization
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Good player, hate his face. Hard pass.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 the good ones will cost big, to avoid this you need to develop and have a constant flow of talent. the Astros had no issue trading Wagner and even with their relatively weak system they just called up Zach Dezenzo - younger and higher ceiling than wagner
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 Bregman seems like the guy they could overpay if that’s what you’re asking. Jays have a bunch of cash to spend this off season. Especially if they trade Bo. Bergman could be one but I highly doubt it. He's a big fish
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 Pivetta pitched today might look good at back of our rotation
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Pivetta pitched today might look good at back of our rotation We don't need back of the rotation piece, need top end to push other guys down.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I hear Juan Soto is good Well apparently they had 700 million to sign Ohtani. So dare to dream.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Well apparently they had 700 million to sign Ohtani. So dare to dream. I know right... he checks every box they want to check in a position player, it's just that he'll have so many teams in on him. Way more teams will be on him than there were on Ohtani. Washington, San Fran, both NY teams, of course the Dodgers, Seattle should be, Toronto. And of course Team X will be Biggest kick in the dick would be Baltimore finally paying for a real FA.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Who are some potential Free agents we could sign this off season? Robbie Grossman

What other owners in their right minds would allow such a pivot after nine years of basically nothing with a top tier payroll? Something just doesn't add up. What's this about 9 years with a top tier payroll? This club isn't even in the top tier of MLB spenders in the first place, and they didn't reach the luxury tax threshold for the first time until the 2023 season. This year they stand to actually finish below the luxury tax level at the end of the season. So that makes a single year of luxury tax level spending in 9 years.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Starting pitching has been solid and all 5 guys return, so that's a bit of a difficult and impractical area to make a large investment. That bring said, they have been largely successful with free agent pitchers so I'm not opposed to it. Hitting has also been average on the whole, but several positions have been black holes. I think we can piece something together at 2B and one of the outfield spots, but 3B and LF are obvious areas for improvement. I'm usually not a proponent of major bullpen additions, but considering we would probably be in the playoff race with a good bullpen, it does make some sense. We've been the worst in the league by far.

This could add flexibility to add offense at first base as another possibility.

I suspect that Clement might end up spending most of his time at SS, either due to trade or injury.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I wouldn't hate bringing back Stripling back on a cheap deal. He looks bad at first glance, but hasn't lost any velo and has a 3.91 FIP.

His 17.5 mil salary can be re-invested elsewhere with Clement playing SS. Free agents of interest, O'neill, Alonzo, Soto, Jd Martinez, Teoscar, Santander, Bregman. It's a pretty thin on the free agent front for position player side. If the Jays traded Bo they would have a fair amount to spend if they wanted to.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 At this rate we can start the 2025 trade deadline thread next week.

If the Jays traded Bo they would have a fair amount to spend if they wanted to. Only way I see Bichette moved is if the relationship between him and the org is fractured. Otherwise, as much as I fear his offensive profile and lower body injuries, he's the only player aside from Vlad with 4 WAR potential on the roster. Well, I guess Varsho too, but that's almost entirely on defense. If they want to contend in 2025, then Bichette probably gives them the best shot. Although I wouldn't be against starting Jimenez at SS and trading Bo to fill other areas. That may not be the best way to maximize 2025 wins but probably a better move long term depending on what Bo's trade value will look like in the winter (and what you think Jimenez could do in a full season at short). The easiest position to fill internally is going to be 2B. Jimenez and Clement are out of options, then you have Wagner, Orelvis, and maybe DS if he's fixable. One of those options (or a combination) should be able to fill that spot pretty well. It's 3B and LF that will be the trouble areas, especially 3B. Really hoping McAdoo is actually good and can stick at 3B because that position looks dire throughout the org, and I really don't want a massive Bregman contract on the books for years to come. Maybe sticking Vlad there for a year isn't the worst idea. I'd be fine with a buy low on Moncada as well but it's been a few years since he's been good.

He's also 17.5 ml next year. That money can be re-invested. I mean, Soto would be the obvious guy, but that's not going to happen. Atlanta has Soler and Ozuna. Both are DH's next year. 1 year of Bo for 1 year of Ozuna matches up salary wise and probably be a decent trade if the Jays were really going for it.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Focus on Soto, but keep Santander as the pivot fallbacknplan. Alonso would be fine too, but I shudder to think of the IF defense with Vlad at 3rd, Bo at SS, Horwitz atv2b and Alonso at 1st. That might be Greek tragedy level s*****
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Best value on the FA market is probably Christian Walker. Would they move Vlad to third to accommodate an elite defensive 1B is the question
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 We don't need back of the rotation piece, need top end to push other guys down. Getting a #1 hard to do. Expensive also. Pivetta looked like good arm for 5th starter. Gives depth. Pushes Rod to long relief or spot starter
