Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 From what I see on X most Astros fans don't like this deal for a rental. Perhaps Houston sees Bloss as a high floor low ceiling prospect. This could be a steal for the Jays but let's see. He seems close to ready but was rushed through AAA it seems. Is Click pulling the trigger on these moves? Most likely him and Tinnish with Mark signing off.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 This move would have made sense for the Astros if Kikuchi was at a Cy young level but to give up a top 100 guy for a rental having a whatever year seems idiotic. I remember when we got Teo for a scrub version of Lirano so thanks again lol.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 50FV.. Let's see if anything else... A 50FV pitcher is f***ing awesome. That is a great trade for the Jays. Holy s***. He can step in now and start.
The_DH Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I liked Kikuchi, but this is not a bad trade.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Interesting arm. But he’s a pitching prospect. They break a lot. This is true but at some point we need to start relying on homegrown/low-cost starters. We’re paying 3 guys in the rotation 20 million each next season.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Have to keep in mind that there were likely other suitors for Kikuchi and it may have driven up his value. Perhaps as intimated by Passan, this was a reaction to the Seattle moves so Houston was up against it to make something happen. Either way the Jays benefit.

Not really a “whatever” season, sure his ERA is bloated but everything else looks good. xERA, FIP, K rate etc. all pretty respectable for a mid-rotation starter

Didn't think he was performing well enough to get the type of return being mentioned here. Happy as hell as a Jays fan.
Joltin Joe Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Does this put us under the financial penalty?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Sweet, knew he'd get us a good haul.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Dana Brown is terrible but I'm sure there's a component here where we take R Montero and give back Green or something.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Does this put us under the financial penalty? I would think so, they should be very close.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 #BlueJays are getting Jake Bloss, Joey Loperfido and Will Wagner for Yusei Kikuchi sources tell @ShiDavidi & me Deal done
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 If this trade is as advertised then I assume there might be a bit more evidence from the Astros world series win that hasn't found it's way to the media...and there might be a chance that Click has it. Based on the media's response (and all of you of course), then this is an unbelievable return for 2 months of Kikuchi.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Holy s*** Nice deal, sweet action!
harvey16 Verified Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I would think so, they should be very close. According to Spotrac they are now $4.3M under the competitive tax balance threshold since Houston will now be paying $3.3M of Kikuchi's remaining salary for this season. This is absolutely huge as it now resets the Luxury Tax penalty back to the minimum 20% for next season. That could be a potential $20M in savings if the Jays go wild in the off-season and go up to a $300M payroll. I have a feeling we are in for a crazy off season like we have never seen before. I can see some big FA signings after a disappointing year. Organization is gonna want to capitalize on the renos and not lose their fan base after a dissatourous season.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Wow that’s a nice haul. Never heard of Wagner but after looking him up he’s more than just a throw in. Great trade.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Vibes are good right now. Feel his recent struggles didn’t hurt his value that much ultimately. Wouldn’t be against bringing him back either potentially.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I have no idea who Will Wagner is. 5 minutes of stat scouting tells me that Ross likes Spencer Horwitz so much that he decided to acquire another one.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 "A big part of why we’re this high on him despite his hit tool issues is Loperfido’s very versatile defensive profile. He has the ability to play all three outfield positions at an average level, while also showing he can handle first and second-base at a passable level. The way Loperfido can move the ball around the infield at first base is actually quite special. While he does many things at an average to solid level, there’s no single aspect of his bat or defensive ability that grades out as plus; this is a profile where the sum is greater than the raw parts. Loperfido projects as a high-end bench utility player for a World Series contender and could sneak into the lineup every day for lesser clubs." The above makes Loperfido much more interesting and potentially valuable than your average plus power fringe contact type guy.

Right? Next year might be a team of Stars and a bunch of interchangeable guys. Might not be the worst strategy in the world if we can land 2 impact bats.
