Once again Captain Kirk shows how much better he is than Boy Jansen.

Not only is Kirk's catching so much obviously better than Jansen's but former all-star and silver slugger Kirk has been more productive than never-won-anything Jansen.

Sorry Danny Boy. Leadership isn't a popularity contest. Performance matters.

The Jays had a winning record this year before Jansen was brought up. We had a better record with Brian Serven (small sample size). Obviously Dalton Varsho is needed in the outfield and Isiah Kiner-Falefa if our best infielder but either one of them would probably be better than Jansen.

Catching is too important a defensive position to be wasted on a fly ball hitter.

Might be some truth to this. Kirk is slashing .283/.346/.478 since April 28. On the season, Kirk's xwOBA is .321 to Jansen's .335 but Kirk is the superior defender.

Jansen has cooled off considerably. If we want to ride the hot hand we may want to switch them in the pecking order for the time being.

There's something about these soft tossers that gives the club fits at the plate.

The explanation is that the Jays just f***ing suck

Can't hit the good pitchers because not enough talent

Can't hit the s***** pitchers because they are mostly mental midgets and the coaches suck

It's not some niche argument like they can't hit soft stuff because they are too good at yanking 96mph fastballs and they get off tempo.

No.

They can't hit anything.

Can't hit in the clutch, can't hit with RISP, can't game plan well against anybody, can't pull the ball enough, can't lift the ball enough, can't hit at home, can't hit on the road, can't hit on holidays, can't hit can't hit can't f***ing hit.

They kind of only do one thing at an above average rate and that is take walks. I guess they also hit doubles at a slightly above average rate but that's not super helpful when the HR rate is below average. They also GIDP the 6th most so that negates a lot of the benefits of walking.

Kind of only ever put up crooked numbers when the opposing pitcher can't throw strikes.

Kirk basically had a bad start to the season. On April 13 he sat at embarrassing 1 wRC+. He's been legitimately really good since then as he's produced a 134 wRC+/1.0 FWAR in only 73 PA. His .380 xwOBA over this period of time ties him with Vlad for the lead on the club. In this same time Jansen has produced a nearly identical 133 wRC+ so the two have been combining to create a fearsome tandem.

Seems to me they have the playing time split just about right. Kirk, when playing more often, seems to suck with the bat. Defense will be there regardless. Jansen is no slouch defensively either. Struggling a bit with the bat right now but while he's healthy, ya gotta ride him. never know when he takes the next pitch off his wrist.

I think it might not be a bad idea to give Kirk a few more starts at the plate. This allows the team to take advantage of his run prevention prowess behind the plate, and gives Jansen more AB as well as Turner has really struggled since the calendar turned to May.

With the armor that Jansen is wearing behind the plate and at the dish hopefully the hand and wrist injuries can at least be mitigated a bit.
