Big_Walleye Verified Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 What the hell are you even blathering on about? You are the biggest f***tard on this board and everyone knows it. Normally I wouldn't even respond to a post of yours, I might as well just have a conversation with the sole of my boot. In my short time here I've wondered why it seems like the same 4 or 5 idiots jawing back and forth with senseless gibberish. It's becoming clear now. It's politically incorrect comments like this that cause the smart people to leave. Taking personal shots at people from behind a keyboard is about as cowardly as it gets. Try having a decent discussion for once without the personal attacks.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Lmao they didn't though. A lot of "power" bats were available who could have played a corner OF spot or DH and instead opted to roll again with defensive minded players like KK and IKF. I had nothing wrong with those signings for depth, but didn't want them starting a majority of the games. As well, you couldn't go into this season banking on Vladdy to be his 2021 self. Had to bring in some reinforcements and improve the lineup as much as possible. Who, name them... Jays were in on all FA's dude?

Very low IQ type of behavior It’s part of the reason the board has failed to grow over the years. I imagine there are a lot of lurkers who choose not to post because of it
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Who, name them... Jays were in on all FA's dude? O’Neil and Teo the low hanging fruit. However, just bc a player didn’t get traded, you don’t know that they weren’t available. We don’t know the FO inner workings but it seems they weren’t putting a priority on finding any plus bats.

This is the counter to the whole “what were they supposed to do???” They could’ve made a trade. They could’ve dealt Tiedemann. Just because player X wasn’t traded doesn’t mean he was unavailable

Don't know about O'Neill as you mention we don't know if they were in on him, signing KK kiboshed that likely. They tried getting Teo, he wanted a multi year deal and took the one year with LAD like anyone would rather play with a juggernaut.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Lol this is not hard... From 2020 to 2022 the Jays had a high end offense and decided to build around Vlad, Kirk and Bo. They already had Springer and he was a huge part of that offense. They decided to move Gurriel and Teo to shore up the defense because they still had lots of good bats to build around. But...2023 Springer didn't just decline he fell off a cliff. Kirk and Vlad forgot how to hit. So now instead of just losing Teo and Gurriel they also lost those three bats making it 5 solid bats gone in total. No one saw that coming and with FA crop in 2023 off season there was f*** all they could do about it other than send a hail mary for Ohtani. Now to make matters worse not only have Vlad, Kirk and Springer failed to.bounce back, they've actually gotten worse and brought Bo with them. Ultimately Atkins has to take the blame, all.im saying is I see no fault in the decisions he made building this roster around the players he chose to build around because all of those bats dying at the same time is not something anyone would have predicted. Thank goodness he hasn't locked any of them in to long term crippling deals at least. The problem with this is, is that it was evident the team had an offensive issue prior to the 2023 deadline. Nothing was done. The issue continued into the playoffs. Then nothing was done to improve the team in the 2023 off season. So, I think we are saying the same thing up to a point. Where we differ is, the body of work that created the reasons nothing was done at two key points in the trade and off season cycle. The Jays had nothing to trade without robbing Peter to pay Paul. The Yankees drafted way better then us and had 4 very solid pitchers they could send for Sotto and still have enough left to be first in the AL East. All this without Cole. They also have Spencer and Dominguez who can either help the MLB team or are really good trade chips. The Yankees also have Warren waiting in the wings on the pitcher side, probably comparable to Ricky T. The Jays bet on hitters regressing to the norm. One, I question the norm for Vlad and Kirk. Two, ok, lets say all the hitters do get better, we used something like 9 SPs last year, unheard of in this day and age when the average is something like 16 per year. We knew eventually that would change. I believe we will see issues with SPs as the season goes on. Kickuvhi has never had strong second halfs. The dog days of August will probably get to 40 yr old Turner, if not sooner. IKF, Biggio and Clement should be bench backups only, and we knew that in the offseason. Yet they are playing full time roles on the team. Vladdy is not a good defensive 1b in total body of work. It was apparent many other teams were going to better this year in our division and the AL. So a team just staying on par for a WC3 was’t going to cut it. That is all the off season did, hope and prey the team would replicate production lost by FAs. Additionally, Teo did want to play here and would have if the $ would have been here. So I was extremely happy with 2022 off season moves as far as Varsho, Bassitt and even Belt. The issue I have is what this team has done and their failure to create conditions for success since June 2023 when obvious we had a major problem.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Imagine your argument being Atkins couldn't fix the roster that he himself spent 8 years putting together in one offseason. The same offseason that he spent whatever resources at his disposal on KK/IKF while totally ignoring that we already have a massive payroll and a farm system producing very little that Shatkins are responsible for. Then name calling and thinking you're above everyone for it. Take a bow you Keyboard Warriors, you've outdone yourselves this time lol.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Yeah but none of that would have fixed what ails this offense, which is Vlad being a .700 OPS singles hitting double play machine, Bo a .550 OPSer, Springer a .550 OPSer and Kirk a .550 OPSer. You don't recover from that unless you have the Orioles pipeline spilling onto the MLB roster. My first point, 1. Replace Mattingly with a SOTA hitting coach, might address this. Since we don't know why Vlad/Bo/Springer/Kirk have a combined .600 OPS we can't say for sure that a different hitting coach would fix them, but it might. What are the chances that Vlad/Bo/Springer/Kirk hit like .220 .300 .300 combined for 600 at bats? If you did a simulation of 1000000 600 at bat seasons based on a true talent .280 .340 .500 hitter how many times would they hit .220 .300 .300 just by chance? Probably never. So there is a reason. Could be injury, could be mental, but it wouldn't be random but be something management should know about. The other things I mentioned would help a bit around the margins, and maybe a lot. Another thing that would have helped is playing Schneider more. And based on minor league stats Barger and Horwitz might be just as good hitters as Schneider. So replacing Turner/IKF/Biggo/Kiermaier with better hitters helps.
