I wanted Hoskins for 1B which would move Vlad to DH, but all I was told was that wasn't realistic because coming off a major injury Hoskins would play almost all DH this season.

 

Oh wait, Hoskins has already started 2 out of the Brewers first 3 games at 1B? That goes against everything I was told about why Hoskins wouldn't be as good of a fit for this team as I thought!

 

Adding Hoskins would have been huge for this team in multiple ways, because not only would we have added a great 1B in Hoskins, Vlad's fWAR would automatically get juiced as the DH too, without the penalty of being atrocious defensively at 1B.

Yeah but the offense was good last year. Finished tied for 7th in wRC+ and that was with several key guys having down years.

 

People just think it was bad because we had some luck/clutch issues that are unlikely to repeat (and in fact improved toward the end of the year) and people weren’t baking in the new park factors into their perceptions of what the offense should be.

 

If Vlad, Kirk, Varsho and Springer rebound like they are projected to the offense should be pretty good.

The offense was good on nerd stats. Kinda good. Zero players would say

Now you have Varsho hitting like 5th who has been a below average hitter in his career, IKF and KK who are like 80-85wRC+. And everyone was clamoring to improve the offence this offseason yet its the first week of the regular season and the lineup card already looks like s***.

How the f*** do you even know if the offense is worse than last year? The team has only played 4 games for crying out loud. On top of that it's averaging 5 runs per game up to this point.

If you're dumb enough to assume all the other players in the lineup will perform exactly as they did last year and you'll have no contribution from anyone else in the organization - then yes. But that's pretty stupid. Even if you did think that way, the Jays were 7th in MLB in wRC+ last year.

Baseball games aren't played on paper. Half of the team dramatically underperformed their projections last season and that's very unlikely to occur again. I think the only important loss to the lineup was Chapman, and he was a complete zero at the plate for approximately half of the season. I actually think the combination of IKF/Clement/Biggio may come close to approximating the same type of slightly above league average offensive production with appropriate matchups. Merrifield was a below average bat for the season as a whole and I think the club may actually stand to improve on what he offered with the available roster options, and I think Turner and Vogelback/Votto will essentially replace what Belt had to offer.
