L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 That's really rich of an obese dude to infer that he could be anywhere close to as good at baseball as Vogelbach. It’s Barstool Max relax
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 I looked up Vogelbach's splits and was amazed at how poorly he's hit left handed pitching for his career. I don't recall coming across splits quite this extreme as most guys who have lefty/righty splits can at least occasionally produce vs same handed pitching. Vs LHP 2023 -81 wRC+ 2022 29 wRC+ 2021 2 wRC+ 2020 24 wRC+ Career 35 wRC+ His numbers against righties are actually pretty potent. He'd be a nice pinch hitting and DH option off the bench as needed.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 17, 2024 Posted February 17, 2024 Some of you guys are too much Did you also get saddy sad when they signed Greg Bird and Dexter Fowler in 2022? Did you wake up at 3 am and pee your Toy Story jammies about the roster implications of those signings? Vogelbach and Escobar probably have a far better chance of making this roster than Dexter Fowler did. Joe Panik was also a harmless minor league signing in 2021, except when he made the team and suddenly it wasn’t so good anymore. I don’t mind vetrin minor league signings. Every team does it, but the fear of one or both of Vogelbach/Escobar making it is real. I hope I’m wrong and both are discarded prior to opening day but assuming these are signings to just fill Buffalo’s roster is probably going to lead to disappointment.

Vogelbach has offensive projections that are the same as Horwitz. Nobody should be "scared" of him making the team as the last man on the bench - the team would be almost identical as if he didn't make it. Even if it's a small chance. Panik was a different signing made in a very different context
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Mets signing Luke Voit to a minor league deal Do they not know how bad that look is? How dare they. Pete Alonso is probably pissed
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 With Vladdy and Manoah getting in better shape Jays need to meet their fatso quota.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Most of you are wrong. You are not assessing these moves in the correct context. Every team signs depth pieces and AAAA guys and washed up near washed up vets for Milb depth. These moves for the first time in years are because we don't have solid options at the MLB and MILB level. When we did these moves in the past, it was with Josh D, or Matt Chapman etc at 3B and we had a some decent backups on the 40 man. We had our bona fide DH or 2b etc, etc. Depth pitchers, I would never say a peep, you can never have to many. These moves are the Blue Jays hoping that they hit lighting in a bottle and as a hedge against the mid MLB roster they have so far. I did preface that the off season is not over and lots of FAs out there and trade possibilities. As it stands however, we don't have a 3b or DH we should go to war with and expect a playoff spot. If Turner plays 3b we need a real DH, If IFK plays 3b and Turner DHs, IFK is not someone who should be our starting 3b, especially when you have a Hodge podge at 2b and no real heavy hitters in the OF. I am getting Kevin Mench and Brad Wilkerson vibes as our patch plan starters this year.. I like JT, but the Dude is old and could fall apart any minute. Delete your account.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2024 Author Posted February 18, 2024 (edited) So much convo for a minor league deal lol. I applaud the Jays if they hand out 20 more of these. You never know which guy worked his ass off in the offseason to bounce back. Projections don't work in every case and you just hope to hit on 1 or maybe 2 of these dudes. If not then who the f*** cares lol. Edited February 18, 2024 by Jays24

Did you wake up at 3 am and pee your Toy Story jammies about the roster implications of those signings? That was before two more miserable years of underperforming players and zero playoff wins with the most frustrating playoff exits possible. People get angry at this because they are rightfully angry at the Jays front office. These are just lightning rods used as scapegoats for anger because the real issues behind the failures the Jays have encountered are more complex. Like why so many of the young stars from this team massively underperformed previous years and expectations. Bad health advice and training? Bad leadership? Bad team chemistry? Bad coaching? Bad computer nerd advice? Could be a mix of all of those but in lieu of having those difficult to pinpoint answers, blaming the team for signing Vogelbach is what fans settle for.

Panik was a different signing made in a very different context I’m not a huge fan of Horowitz but I think him making the team in that “start against righties a couple days a week + pinch hit for IKF” role would be better received. The only way this winter makes any sense is if the Jays plan to use their young players in critical spots. If it’s just going to be a revolving door of 0-1 WAR vetrins hoping one of them sticks, then it’s not going to be a fun experience. I don’t think anyone is knocking signing vets to minor league deals. It’s the fact that the Jays are likely going to use those vets at some point that is the aggravating part (see Panik). Yes, Vogelbach does hit well against RHP but he’s also a DH who makes the fatties already on the roster look like they have eight packs by comparison. There is very little upside or versatility there.

We don't know who's been in the "lab" all offseason working their tails off with experts v. who's been dogging it all offseason.

We don't know who's been in the "lab" all offseason working their tails off with experts v. who's been dogging it all offseason. I came across a Twitter post outlining how Escobar revamped his offseason training routine so at best he proves he has something left in the tank and can start against LHP, and at worst he starts the season with the team and shows he's washed up and the team eventually moves on.

Rich coming from the guy who is literally the worst talent assessor and knows less about actually building a winning Team than any of the frequent posters on the board. Wouldn’t be the first time this has been pointed out either. Go shout to the clouds about some broadcaster using the win stat or something.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Michael Anthony Hall? It’s ok my friend. Take your shots. I’ve got some top notch stuff in the works and I’m in a good place with all that. Everything happens for a reason. Remind me to chime in when people are calling you disabled and a bum that doesn’t work:) So much for civil rivalries.

See Max, I am ok with a retort like this. It doesn't have an arrogance of a know it all telling a long time poster to delete their account. Back to my original post and what many of the posters in this thread are not, or purposely not distinguishing. There is a difference between bringing in depth, happens all the time and I am 100% ok with. VS. - Not having a a sufficiently adequate roster and throwing mud at the wall/hoping to hit lighting in the bottle and something sticks to fill weaknesses on the MLB roster. Yes, lots of teams have to do this. Teams have been and are doing it for years. We were hoping on significant improvement from last year. Especially since our competition is getting better. The reason these moves are being highlighted is because up until now (time left) the team is just trying to equal last year's production and I have not seen any significant improvement. It is all replacement level moves vs taking the team to next level. Remember page 1 of the IFK signing thread - If he is a depth piece solid move. No way he is our starting 3b, don't get panties in a bunch, just a depth move. IFK- Currently the starting 3b.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 Urshela will likely sign for what IKF did and I’d say rather have him. Maybe he only wanted 1 year deal and that’s good. What a super s*** major pickup

No way he is our starting 3b, don't get panties in a bunch, just a depth move. IFK- Currently the starting 3b. With effective use of matchups and platooning I think the club can extract 2 wins if not more out of the third base position. If IKF can carry forward any of the improvements he showed for much of the season he may actually surprise us with a league average bat as he somehow managed to post a .750 OPS over a nearly 4 month stretch last season. The minor league invitations simply aren't worth getting worked up about. If Escobar shows he has something left in the tank he can start against left handed pitching and add a touch of offense to the lineup. He's a low risk short term option that can be discarded at a moments notice. If Escobar makes the team then the small army of potential third base options in the minors (Martinez/Barger/Palmegiani/Lantigua etc.) can continue to hone their craft to prepare for their initial callups. If Vogelbach sticks then Horwitz simply shifts back to AAA to bide his time waiting for a callup. These are veteran players who have experienced success in the past and if they have good springs and end up helping the club that's a plus. It's more than likely each of them is released by the end of spring and given an attempt to catch on with another team.
