Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 But I don't even consider it "savings". They're paying a luxury tax that reflects the actual value of the deal, all things considered. Like, they're not paying the amount they would if all 182M was paid in the next 5 years, because the actual contract Snell signed is significantly less valuable than a deal with no deferrals. If deferrals were not allowed, Snell doesn't get 182M. He gets 160M (or whatever). Bingo, that's what I initially post, that it's more between 160-165, and I was correct. I don't get the fuss either. Dodgers are just fortunate that their owner spends big money and are a hedge company. Nice for them.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Freddy Garcia Aaron Sele Jamie Moyer Joel Pineiro Gil Meche? 4 of 5. Ryan Franklin is the other arm.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 The same people who don't understand how tariffs are going to cost them far more money. The Dodgers are playing within the system - period. If you are a free agent and baseball is your life and the money is roughly the same - you are going to either your hometown team or the team that has the best chance to win - or where all the hottest women live - LA is pretty damn hard to beat. Oh and the weather VS Toronto is an added bonus. I disagree with this one. In the US, gotta go with Tennessee. Now they don't have a baseball team, so then Florida it is. Non-US, Colombia is where the hottest women live. Connor should be down there instead of in Morocco right now.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 4 of 5. Ryan Franklin is the other arm. f***. Was it him instead of Meche? I have no recollection of Ryan Franklin at all

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Jays signed Pineiro to a minor league deal in May of the 2015 season haha wow. He was then released in July.

I remember there was an offseason where there was a lot of discussion on the old forum about the merits of signing Joel Pineiro in free agency. I think think JP Ricciardi also almost signed Gil Meche the offeason he signed in KC.

Meche got 5 years/$55M same money as Burnett the previous offseason. Lilly went to the Cubs for 4 years/$40M. Instead, we had to settle for Tomo Ohka, John Thompson and Victor Zambrano in the early part of the 2007 season haha.

That sounds an awful lot like last offseason when the team was trying for the likes of Soto, Ohtani and Chapman and ended up with KK, IKF and Turner.

We also picked up Green's option and signed Yariel Rodriguez, but very similar and underwhelming, I feel like puking.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Damn I like Tommy Edman, but that's a lot for a super utility guy and someone who is coming off a season playing only 37 games and who is going to be turning 30 next season. Not sure he ever gets back to being a 5 WAR player like in 2022, but I see him more of a 2-3 WAR guy now. Offensively, doesn't have many tools other than some SB upside. He's not like a Ben Zobrist.

They did sign Frank Thomas who was coming off a 39 HR season in Oakland, and he was pretty solid in 2007 offensively. But yeah the pitching signings were awful. Only plus is we were able to see McGowan and Marcum emerge as reliable starters in 2007, but then injuries hit them during the 2008 season damn.

Seems like a very big commitment to a secondary piece. The positions he plays and versatility he brings is big for the Dodgers right now, but it may not be 2-3 years from now. If he doesn't catch fire in the playoffs, I can't imagine he gets a deal like this. Sometimes things just break your way!

There's deferred money, it's probably like just over 10M AAV, and it's the Dodgers, it's not bad.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 Passan is using BREAKING way too liberally. Baseball fans are dying for news. Don't play with us like that, Jeff. Not for a Tommy Edman extension.
