I can't tell from that video...does the ump say anything to Skenes? All I can see from that video is the ump talking to Derek Shelton. I originally assumed Shelton barked at the ump and that was his response, but perhaps the ump did bark out at Skenes to not show him up? Hard to tell because the commentators were talking. Either way - it wasn't a strike - it wasn't even that close and certainly not a pitch you'd start walking off the mound, assuming it's a strike. It's really stupid to show up the ump like that in the 1st inning whether you're a rookie or a vet.

 

I'm also not sure the one Langford at bat is evidence that umpires give rookies a harder time like they did back in 1995. Angel shouldn't be used as any example of how the typical umpire works these days. Angel Hernandez is a disgrace to the game.

Cowser or Wells in the AL? Gil or Mason Miller could enter the conversation.

Was going to ask this question as well a couple of days ago haha.

 

Paul Skenes has received more media attention in my view, whereas Jackson Merrill hasn't got the same fanfare, though quietly has been really good posting a 4.2 fWAR season thus far and helping the Padres make the Wild Card. It's either one of those two, but since Merrill is an everyday player and has been really good, would go with him.

 

As for the AL, it's not so clear cut. Cowser has been a solid piece for the O's, though offensively he hasn't put up eye popping numbers. He leads all the candidates in terms of WAR. As for Wells, playing behind the plate on a contending team is definitely an advantage. Gil's numbers have slowed down since his hot start. Mason Miller has been electric and one of the best closers/relievers in baseball this season. I know he's just a closer, but his numbers stand out in comparison more to the other candidates. We've seen closers win ROY before, so wouldn't surprise me if Mason Miller gets some serious consideration.

Yeah Jackson Merrill is the NL Favourite paying a 1.08 whereas Skenes is second at 9.50. Only way Skenes gets close is he wins like NL Pitcher of the Month in September and Merrill has a drop-off.

 

In the AL, Cowser is the favourite at 1.38 with Austin Wells at 3.10. The rest of the pack is way behind like Wilyer Abreu (26.00), Colt Kieth (91.00), Ceddanne Rafaela (101.00), Luis Gil (101.00) Wyatt Langford (126.00), Jackson Holliday (151.00) and Mason Miller (151.00).

 

Heck, I would put $5 on Mason Miller for fun at those odds. But yeah I see voters likely voting for an everyday guy like Cowser or Wells.

Yeah 6 years seems like a lot, but I guess they had to had the extra year or two to keep him from testing free agency. Great deal for Chapman, but not sure I would be wanting to pay him $25M AAV starting at the age of 31 for the next six seasons. A lot of his value is tied to his glove so he if regresses defensively as he ages, doesn't have enough of a bat to make up for it.

 

You know what you're going to get with Chapman. He's not a star offensively. He's a guy who can hit anywhere from .220 to .240 with a 110 to 120 wRC+ and around 25 HR's.

Bregman and his agent are definitely happy when they wake up this morning. He likely now could get a 7 to 8 year deal with more AAV since he has a track record of success offensively as well, whereas Chapman is really just more known for his defensive abilities. I could see Bregman's contract breaking $200M easily.

Wow, that is a massive overpay for a guy turning 32 next year that hasn't hit above .250 or an OPS over .800 in 5 years. He's clearly declining including his defensive matrix. How can the Giants front office not see this?

That isn't a good sign for the Jays as we near the offseason. That's a big bag of money for a guy entering his age 32 season. That said, he's been really, really good this year. Good for Chappy, but there's a ton of risk in that for the Giants. Giants are an interesting team. Fitzgerald, Bailey and Ramos are nice young players, but overall, this team stinks and I don't see that changing anytime soon unless they spend a f***ton more in the offseason. Not much on the farm system to get excited about, yet they always seem to be trying to shove and buy big names.

As much talk as Judge gets around the league, Bobby Witt Jr. is having an unreal season. His bat has matched his D and he's going to put up a 10 WAR season... When was the last SS that's done that? Ripkin Jr.?

 

This final month should be interesting to watch this MVP race unfold.

Well that made me look up who Lou Boudreau was. Quite a good player. It's so amazing to look at stats from that era and see a guy who had a 14.5% BB rate and a 1.3% K rate. Such a different time.

Yeah - who knows. I never really understand the Giants. The only angle I can see is this is the Giants telling the league and it's players "we're committed to winning and will pay top dollar, as required to achieve that". Do you overpay Chapman in hopes that other stars think "those guys will spend what's required to get top players" and thus it makes them more attractive to free agents? That's the best I can come up with.
