Most talented baseball player in history. Very skeptical there's any reasonable argument against now.

Agreed. He's a superstar in every aspect of the game.

I think he could play the outfield pretty well given the opportunity (cause why couldn't he at this point), obviously he can't cause of the health of his arm. There's a Mike Trout 10-11 WAR season in Ohtani if he ever got to do that. Comforting for the Dodgers to know that if he can't pitch for whatever reason forever in the future they can easily just decide to stick him in the OF.

I like the idea that if everything possible broke right for Ohtani, and you got one of his better hitting/pitching/baserunning seasons together and let him play the field for part of the season he'd be worth like 15 WAR.

To play devil's advocate to the notion that he would be a plus outfielder still, you kind of have to consider the fact that he's now 30 and has played the outfield in competitive games for all of 8 innings in his entire MLB career, and he never received one opportunity to make a play in those instances. How ever much he's out there shagging flyballs in BP pregame doesn't hold a candle to the instincts and muscle memory he's probably lost since playing the outfield in competitive games back in Japan. It's entirely possible the DH penalty is still more favourable than having him play defense at this point in time. After all, his teammate Teoscar Hernandez is the perfect example of a guy who should have all the tools to play an elite - let alone average - corner OF, and he's struggled immensely to do so his entire career, despite countless opportunities out there to improve.

Won't argue with you about most talented player in history. That just goes without saying lol.

This is not the Moneyball Billy Beane. Different guy. FYI.

I believe most know that, well, I think.

When I first heard I thought it was the other guy

Man - the Red Sox have to be disappointed in what they got in Masataka Yoshida. Reminds me a bit of LGJ.

That was such a stupid signing. They are lucky that he's even this good.

Really bad body type for baseball as he's built like an NFL RB. Short and squatty and not very athletic. I can see why scouts panned the signing when it happened.

He's almost entirely reliant on a very good hit tool. If that was just average he'd be below replacement value.

Grayson Rodriguez to the IL - The Orioles announced today that Rodriguez has been placed on the 15-day IL with right lat/teres discomfort, retroactive to August 4.

Joe Ryan left his start today with tricep soreness in his pitching shoulder, after just 33 pitches across two innings. That will be a massive blow to the Twins if he's going to miss time.

Is he actually THAT bad defensively or are balls off the Monster messing with the defensive stats? His offense actually seems legit.

He had a -12 Statcast fielding run value last year in just 84 games in the field. It was so bad that he's only played 1 inning in the field this year.

like 110 wRC+ legit? Is that what you mean?

He's projected higher than that, and since a slump coming off injury he's been pretty hot (150 for July and 135 so far in August). In this new offensive environment, he's probably at least a top 60 ish bat.

I guess in terms of salary he is a disappointment at 18 million a year. People have fond memories of Frank Catalanotto who was also a 110 wRC+ guy in his time here, but seem to hate any modern age low power high average guys...

Frank C. only earned 2 million a year though, so fair enough to call Yoshida a disappointment for his salary.

Bednar's been garbage this year, another blown save... Woof!

Hes still working back from an oblique injury. Really only had 3 terrible games this season all in April.

May/June he was as good as usual.

Other than 6 appearances he's been good, yes.

The Mets can jump them this afternoon for the final WC spot.

The Brewers were taking BP off of them this morning
