Yeah his type of high octane arsenal isn't exactly conducive to long term arm health.

Curious what people think of Boston as an organization now? Is their turn around this year real? Are they set up for some wild cards the next few years?

 

If they win some playoff games this year the Red Sox will have beat the Bo/Vlad Jays in playoff wins like 10-0 (currently ahead 6-0 I believe).

 

I've always said Red Sox are a great-great organization. Maybe 3rd after LA Dodgers and NY Yankees. Gets into a bit of philosophy about exactly what an 'organization' is. An organization is not the current baseball ops people, but really the ownership, the culture, the accountability, the love they have for the common man. John Henry is an elite but he uses his power to try and bring happiness to the ordinary person's life.

 

I think people didn't like their last set of leadership, but since Theo the Red Sox have changed leadership... 3 times? 4?

 

John Henry is a great owner. Changes things up when needed. Cherrington, Dombrowski, Bloom, Breslow since Theo.

 

John Henry has gone through 3 leadership groups during Atkins era.

 

The Boston Red Sox are a great-great-great organization. Lead the league in World Series titles this century, and do everything they can do bring happiness to a fans life.

 

Atkins would have lasted like 2.5 years under John Henry.

People will think I am being a bit inconstent here, as I have said previously Baltimore is the best run team of all time. A little nuance though.

 

The Boston Red Sox are a top 3 baseball organization with one of the best leaders (John Henry) in the history of the game. They have won more World Series than any other team this century, and they seem to always find a way to contend after a down year or two.

 

The current leadership of the Baltimore Orioles is a historically great baseball-ops group. This could lead to Baltimore being a top 5 MLB franchise if the current group is able to establish a long term elite culture and hand down what they know to the next Baltimore baseball ops group.

 

So great things happening in Baltimore and it's kind of new, great things happening in Boston and it's part of a long term cycle of success.

Just scrolling through Fangraphs today. Some observations:

 

- Cronenworth is having a nice bounce back season in SD.

- Carlo Santana punched father time in the dick and is having a big season at age 38.

- Jesse Winker remembered how to hit again (must be healthier).

- DeJong is reminding people why Atkins traded for him.

- Julio Rodriguez continues to really struggle.

- Bellinger seems to be settling in and the offense isn't what it was last year. Looks like he's a good, not great bat (115 wRC+).

- Riley has figured it out.

- The Cardinals decision to jump the market and get Gray, Lynn and Gibson seems to be working?

- Jordan Hicks seems to be running out of steam.

Yeah - I should have included him. Julio and Corbin should be 2 of the faces of MLB right now. Hopefully they both turn it around soon.

Interesting story on Kwan. Cleveland wants him swinging harder so he doesn't make as much contact...

 

I recall reading a blurb from Baseball America prior to the season stating that Addison Barger intentionally focused on contact instead of launch angle in 2023, so his contact rates improved significantly but he was hitting line drives and GB's instead of home runs (he hit 26 HR's between 3 levels in 2022 and then 9 in 2023). I'm not a hitting expert by any means, but when I read that I thought why would you take someone that hits the ball really hard and in the air, and try to get him to hit the ball in the air less? Seems like the Guardians took the opposite approach with Kwan, wanting more damage (sorry Donnie) instead of contact, and it has worked, but then again Kwan was so good at making contact that even if his contact ability regressed a little bit it likely wouldn't have been that drastic. The fact that it improved even with the added power is remarkable. Really shows how complicated hitting is.

I suspect Barger's 2023 downturn in power was more due to the reported elbow issue that he played through. I recall it didn't really affect his throwing but had a large effect on his offensive output. In his AAA stint this season he was back to producing fairly similar power output to his 2022 numbers in A+/AA.

While on the subject of the Bosox, they've lucked into one of the top helium guys this year, Kristian Campbell. 21 yrs old, 6'3", 190 lbs. 168 wRC+ at A+, 236 wRC+ at AA in 82 PA since the promotion

Cleveland's Jhonkensy Noel hit a HR in his first MLB AB. Very cool!

 

He has displayed some serious raw power in the minors, though he strikes out a lot.

Didn't have a real MLB season until age 25 though and he's already 32
