Masterbather Verified Member Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 No because whites can’t have records in the Negro League. They were extremely privileged farmers who don’t deserve additional recognition Josh Gibson is the greatest baseball player to ever live. Retire his number Jackie Robinson. Wayne Gretzky. Michael Jordan. Josh Gibson Lol. Whatever, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. MLB gonna MLB, 2024 gonna 2024, but for them to get credit for trying to "make things right", come on, this is really a sleight of hand to make as much of the unsavoury past just go away.

I won’t lose any sleep either. I had never heard the name Josh Gibson until yesterday (actually sounds like a white boy name to me) But ya they’re all patting themselves on the back as their ESG rating goes up. Good job MLB

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 Because they weren't allowed to, solely due to the colour of their skin. You're going to need to get over this. People will learn the stats from those players/records are unique, but it will create good conversation on the atrocities of our past. Yes I understand they were barred and thats awful. But we are now moving the goalposts for what counts and doesn't count in the record books, and its not even the same for all players. End of the day I don't really give a s***, its not like I spend time looking at old records. More just that i'll be rolling my eyes whenever people say Josh Gibson is the all-time AVG/SLG/OPS leader, because he isn't.
mphenhef Verified Member Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 What's next? Adding retired players beer league stats? To be fair, they removed many of the stats for these players for things like their barnstorming tours and exhibition games. Otherwise, the counting stats would have been MUCH higher.

To be honest, I don't find it all that different then comparing stats from the 1920's to stats from the 2020's. - Ruth played in stadiums that didn't have outfield fences and in some cases, the outfield fences were held by spectators, who would MOVE THE FENCE depending on which team/player was up. - The accuracy of stats kept from like 1880 to say 1950 v. today is always in question. - # of games played changed. - Level and amount of competition changed dramatically. - The mound heights changed throughout the years. - Distance between bags just changed, no takeout slides, disengagement changes, ghost runners, etc. The reality is the goalposts have and continue to move all the time, which should be expected for a sport that's been around for 150+ years. Comparing stats always needs to be done with some knowledge of the game and a grain of salt. I don't think this is much different.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Never thought I'd see another Interference during an infield fly....
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 He probably should have been DFA'd already anyway.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 ^ the language thing aside, not a good look at all. Expected an apology

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 He's s***, moron. He's been somewhat decent this season, but his K/9 really low. His 2022 season looks more like an anomaly.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Luis Gil - 29 hits allowed in 63.1 innings this year. Unreal.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Luis Gil - 29 hits allowed in 63.1 innings this year. Unreal. Awesome start for him. If he could lower his BB/9, watch out!
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 Never thought I'd see another Interference during an infield fly.... This one is even worse because Soto needs to get back to the bag or else its a DP. Isn’t the baserunner entitled to the bag?? f***ing egregiously bad call.
