One good thing the Jays have going for them, the only free agents after this season are Jansen, Richards, Yimi, Turner, KK and Kikuchi, all of whom would have many replacement options available.

That, couple with a ton of guys going into their last seasons before FA, they have all kinds of options available when it comes to hanging on to certain guys, trading, or completely nuking the roster and starting over

List of guys with 1 year left after 2024Â…Vlad, Bo, Bassitt, Green, IKF, Romano, Biggio, Mayza, Swanson, Cabrera.

I think the Jays/Rogers won't be spending into the tax every year as well, they will probably do what the Dodgers did and have a "reset" for a season.

Well that isn't true at all. His wRC+ for 2021/2022 (combined) is <100. He was good with the bat last year, and in 2018/2019. Dude can't run or play any defense. He has to post a wRC+ >120 to be worth having on your team.

If Jays had signed him, you'd be gargling Atkins' balls as usual.

Assuming Soler would have signed with the Jays for 3 years and 42 mil I probably would have talked myself into it. But if we had the choice between Turner and Soler, I'd probably lean Turner at his price.

Turner can play 1B and can stand at 3B and 2B. The one year deal is nice. His consistency is excellent. He's old though.

Soler has huge power potential but he has less defensive utility and he's been very hit or miss. That hit or miss seems like an increasing risk as he enters his mid 30s. Fans tend to be more optimistic with their projections so the thought of plugging Soler in and getting 3 years of 35+ homers is tantalizing. But the reality is that he probably doesn't come anywhere close to that.

I also hate the idea of locking up this amount of money/years into a DH when good ones are available every year for 10 mil. Some years we may not even need a DH at which point that 14 mil could be spent elsewhere on a position of need.

Well said, I agree. I would have liked Soler, but Turner at 1 year the better option IMO

Here are this year's FA signings so far. Taken from Reddit:

I'm just eyeballing this but it looks like we've spent the 2nd most amount of money in the AL after the Royals lol.

I mean - the guy certainly has upside. If the Jays experts believed there was something different in his approach (from last year) that they thought was sustainable and deserving of a 3 year deal, then I'd be inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt - yes. Atkins has been pretty damn good at signing FA's. I feel that's a pretty logical take on it, thank you very much.

I was just pointing out that Jays24's statement wasn't correct (which he confirmed was certainly cherry picked to include 2018/2019 season - which are essentially irrelevant at this point). But thanks for coming out SBC - quality content as per usual.

Interesting news. Financially it would make more sense to stay in Japan and become a MLB free agent at 25 yrs old or something. I wonder when we will see the reverse, where a guy like Noble Meyer goes to play in Japan to hit MLB free agency early.

Rintaro Sasaki, who set the Japanese high school home run record, has signed a letter of intent to play at Stanford, the school announced Tuesday. Sasaki will join the Cardinal’s 2024 recruiting class.

“He may be the most high-profile international prospect to play college baseball in the United States in a long time,” coach David Esquer said. “His power bat plays right into our style of play, and we look forward to him contributing immediately to help us achieve our goals of competing for and winning national titles.”

Sasaki hit 140 home runs in his high school career and was projected to be the top selection in the Nippon Professional Baseball draft. He last fall opted for another route, however, and declared he would forego the draft and instead pursue the opportunity to play college baseball. While there have been some Japanese players that have come to America for college in recent seasons, such as UC Irvine third baseman Jo Oyama and former Oregon outfielder Rikuu Nishida, there has never been a player of Sasaki’s stature to bypass NPB in favor of college baseball.

Listed at 6-foot, 250 pounds, Sasaki stands out most for his massive raw power, which grades out at least as well above-average. He’s not all power, however. He has a good feel for the barrel, creates easy bat speed and has an advanced approach at the plate. He’s a solid defender at first base.

While he likely makes more in Japan now that NCAA has NIL he can make a lot of money in college as well...

Sorry I am late to the Soler convo...but him signing with the Giants assures he will not hit 30. The curse of Barry Bonds is real!

The opposite of Carter Stewart. I wonder how close he is to being able to sign a FA deal or if he would even get one?

He signed a 6 year deal in 2019 so 2025 FA but signed a 2 year extension so I guess 2027.

And John Means isn't healthy either, not surprisingly

Those developments must have played a part in the Orioles pulling the trigger on the Burnes acquisition.
