wamco Verified Member Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 Highly likely IKF or whatever his name is will out-WAR Longoria but I’d still take Longoria if I got this desperate. I’d definitely prefer door number 3 of trading for a 3bman.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 IKF SUX Fangraphs gave him a -.2 on D last year for what it’s worth. I hope the public debacle with Ohtani loosens the purse strings a bit more than planned. Prob wishful thinking I hate Kiner-Fluffer Wanted no part of him at all
wamco Verified Member Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 So 2 members have put their reputation on the line that IKF and Jose Ramirez deals are imminent. Can we give them the morosi treatment? No further posting allowed by spanky or French soup if these deals don’t come to fruition?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 26, 2023 Posted December 26, 2023 Everyone that said this signing wouldn’t happen is likely playing off that they never said that. In a vacuum if you need a CF, it’s a good deal. It definitely lessons Varsho’s value. KK ain’t starting the year in the corner
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 The most positive part of this signing, after the fact that we get the dreamiest man in a baseball uniform back for 1 more year, is that it stops the Belli to Toronto talk. There were two splashes in this market, Jays didn't get either one, now all fans should be looking Laika's posts (I hate feeding his ego, but his off-season thoughts this year have been spot on), for the Jays moving forward. Contracts which increase our depth (Term used a phrase of "raise the floor" like all good lawyers he likely stole this phrase from someone much smarter than he), and improve us without impediment of the long term goals. I suspect a defensive first 3B is on its way and a short term deal on a bat who kills one side of platoon for OF/DH. Trade conversations stills need to happen, but they don't need to be made in the off-season
wamco Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 How high does IKF raise the floor from having no 3bman? An inch?
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Author Posted December 27, 2023 I disagree with all the folks who say "let's wait till the deadline to patch up the holes." Ever since 2020, we have known exactly what our biggest weakness was going to be going into the year and that same deficiency was the exact reason why our season ended early. 2020 - defense (team was young so this was fine) 2021 - defense and bullpen (cost us making the playoffs in what was our best team probably) 2022 - left handed offense and defense 2023 - offense 2024 - projected to be offense again I understand most teams can't be amazing at everything but we should try to be aggressive patching up our holes now while it won't deplete our already thin farm system. We can use those assets for another concern that will probably pop up during the year since things don't always go as planned.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 It's been a terrible offseason so far.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 I’m trying to find a text or a tweet or something but a few weeks ago I thought I read that the Jays were likely to get KK again because another org wants Varsho and the Jays were open to moving him. I just can’t find anything in a short search so maybe it’s not something I read who knows. Interesting. Lets hope we don’t get back pennies on the dollar if they decide to trade Varsho

I just want IKF for multiple years

Still don’t think he’s a great fit unless he’s considered a 4th OF/bench piece. Feels like another move must be coming. If they trade Varsho and sign Bellinger then bringing back KK makes sense

All the complainers at that time were whining about how Atkins can't build a bullpen. Well we had a top bullpen but multiple regulars had down years and that's why the offense sucked. No one wants to wait until the deadline to patch holes up but what else is there to be done? Overpay on long term deals for Chapman and Belli? If we get locked into too many deals like that it will probably be one of the few ways in which we can't consistently compete for the WC. And I'm not sure that the offense is even projected to be that bad. Take a guy like Varsho, he's projected for a wRC+ of 106. You'd never know that with the way this board talks about him. I think we are projected to have a good offense.
Marew Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 A patch job of a team can still win the World Series. In case anyone doesn’t remember the mighty ducks (mighty blue jays) and team Iceland (dodgers).
wamco Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Lol I didn't say there was a deal lol.. I just want IKF for multiple years Oh I know that, your posts are just horrible
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 In this market you HAVE to be okay with IKF on a one year deal It wouldn't be bad. He's been a decent player at times. It would basically be the Whit Merrifield experience, minus five homers. We lived that for two years and it was honestly... tolerable. The org infield depth is finally good, too, so a prospect might take over.

I think we are projected to have a good offense. I don't agree. The whole world was laughing at our options in the cleanup spot for a reason. We friggin used Varsho for several games to start the season until he proved to be useless there. I agree that people questioned our back end bullpen. I didn't think they'd be as good as they were. For this upcoming year, we are putting a lot of eggs in the Green basket. I hope he's able to revert back to what he was otherwise this can be an issue too. This we can see at the trade deadline based on how they perform until then.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 How high does IKF raise the floor from having no 3bman? An inch? Yes I'd wager that Barger has a better offensive year if both were given full playing time KF might play better defense but still no thanks
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Ok I hear ya. I think the KK and IKF signings (I trust Spanky) raise the floor for us. But they also don't preclude us from signing Bellinger or Chapman should their prices drop. Say Bellinger does 5 years and Chapman does 4 then we could still be in on them. The thing I really don't care for is that assuming that Kiemaier is starting in center field vs Varsho then the team likely just lowered their potential ceiling.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Why the f*** should the team fire Varsho into the sun? Please tell me you aren't actually this dumb. The guy is projected for 3 wins, has averaged 3 wins in his career when prorated to an entire season's worth of plate appearances, is inexpensive and has a lot of remaining years of control. He legitimately might be MLB's best outfield defenders, but apparently after a single down season at the plate he should be "fired into the sun". For f***s sakes stuff like this just makes you look like a complete ignoramus. Not interested in him getting another 500 at-bats is wins is projected mainly on Defense which won’t be an issue for the Jays OF. They need to add a bat in LF. Kiermaier is the CF. You can’t roll out the same OF as last Season and when all is said and done I don’t think they will. You’re taking the fire into the Sun comment way to literally. I’m not suggesting giving him a way. I just don’t want him as an everyday player. Kiermaier almost signifies how little they trust him as the everyday CF. It always sounded bad.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Love Willy Adames and want to Extend him to a Matt Chapman type deal
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Bo's risky the way he dives into the plate. Also he scares me on D.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 Whether I like this move or not depends on what else we do. We need 2 big bats. If KK is taking up one of them, we have a problem. If not, this is a good move at a good price imo. I'd also expect him to be closer to 2 WAR.

Bo to the Cubs for PCA and Adrian Santana PCA and Tiedemann to the Guardians for JRam and their Round A Comp Pick Barriera to the Brewers for Willy Adames Thoughts on this hypothetical string of mock trades?
