Chilling with his dog named "Decoy", with a CAA client radio silent on the plane... ;)

Yeah, if he didn’t know the plan prior, he knew in real time trading texts with his agent.

Who gets multiple offers at same price and doesn’t ask for more?

The Japanese are interesting people. Seems like Ohtani is the one that made the offers, not the teams. Very odd process, but i'd guess he's happy with the result.

Passan confirms the deal that he signed with the Dodgers was proposed to the Jays and Giants also. They agreed to it, but Ohtani ended up choosing the Dodgers.

Angels declined it lol

Kobe Bryant.

Back in 2017, Bryant had filmed the clip as a favor to the team. Now, more than three years after his death in a helicopter crash, Bryant's reputation as the ultimate competitor spans all sports, and his message to Ohtani registered the same posthumously in 2023 as it would have then: There's no better place in the world to win than Los Angeles, and there's no better team in baseball to win with than the Dodgers.

"That was one of the highlights of the whole meeting," Ohtani told ESPN through his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. "I was really surprised to see it. It was a strong and touching message."

When Bryant said Ohtani's name, it took him aback. They never met, but Ohtani marveled at his commitment, to his craft, to his sport, to his team. Mizuhara, who is as much consigliere to Ohtani as the conduit for his words, grew up in Los Angeles and understood what it meant for Bryant to vouch for the Dodgers. A minute of his time, of the presence he still casts, felt like a wonderful eternity.

Lolwut??? The Dodgers had Kobe Bryant record a video pitch to Ohtani back in 2017 when he first came over, and they used that same clip in their pitch this time around.

Jays should have offered 750 and hit that billion CAD mark. Oh well!

Looks like they weren't even given a chance to. Doesn't seem like there was much back and forth on the dollar figure at all

Ohtani was basically like I want $700M, make it happen however you want, and teams agreed to it. That's what maximum leverage as a free agent looks like.

Well, he wasn't exactly around this time to record a new one for them.

Would be interesting to see how someone like Boras would've approached this. He's relentless in trying to extract every last dollar for his clients.

Jays marketing employee: "Just got word, Wayne Gretzky is offering to record a video in our pitch."

Marketing director: "Nah, let's stick with Munenori."

to be fair, maybe this is why Shohei is not a boras client. As history has shown , it is not about the last dime to him. I think the jays would have had a better chance had he had boras, but it is what it is i guess. Still hurt from that roller coaster last friday to be honest.

To be fair, T.O. Gave it their best shot. They didnt get him and it is time to move on. We have heard every minute detail, from his couch surfing, to the name of his dog, to every single detail about his contract. Who cares.

Time for Atkins to make some kind of move to improve the Blue Jays.

The Jays would’ve had a better chance if they were located in LA

After looking on Reddit, several people who speak Japanese said the translation was “he was surprised”

Not “I found it funny”

Probably reporters trying to use translators which don’t really work half the time

It was Ohtani’s own translator dude that mistranslated. His own fault.

Guy provably lied his way into the best translator gig of all time

All we learned from this saga is that Ohtani is a piece of s***. Boo the hell out him when he comes here, but I'm otherwise done talking about terrible human beings. There are a lot in baseball.

This is rich even coming from you.

How in the world do you come to that conclusion? The guy just deferred nearly his entire salary so that his team could surround him with more talent. It's hard to be much more selfless than that.

Why is he a piece of s*** Grant? WTF? Why would you boo him? You would be embarrassing yourself, Toronto and those around you.

...so a previous report stated the Jays had the same offer, this report stated it was "similar" ...plus some additional details on the timeline...etc

Is it really an isolated incident that the Bluejays got swept up in a runaway rumor though? I feel like it’s not. They need to work a little more under the radar. I don’t understand why they need to publicly link themselves to every FA imaginable.

The Blue Jays haven't publicly linked themselves to anyone. It's not like Atkins or Shapiro have been holding press conferences discussing their free agency targets or something.

It's not the Blue Jays making the linkage, but hyperactive media, twits on twitter, and TwistedLogic. All in an effort to be the first with the "scoop".

BS. Someone in their org is leaking. There’s no other explanation to how often they are linked to players

Rogers is loaded and the Jays have already said they want to make a splash this offseason. That's all the information baseball insiders need to hear to start figuring out who these splash pieces could be
