Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I think it’s really going to come down to the Dodgers and Jays and how far Rogers is willing to go on this. I’d hope the pitch of a lower key setting in Toronto and the newly renovated ballpark with renovated amenities and the complex in Florida are all strong draws.

Basically what BNS said the other day in his article, who knows what Ohtani wants, but that dude that tweeted a long while back about Toronto being a place he was interested in, holds water.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Ooh... there's a nugget, that dude's an ESPN reporter in LA, and worked with both clubs. Hmm...

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Who doesn’t want Ohtani? Anyone? Is this another case of me being the black sheep, because I would be a hard pass.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 The come down from thinking we might witness Ohtani in a Jays uni to seeing Hoskins and Candelario is gonna be depressing

Not wanting Ohtani just because reasons is stupid. Not wanting Ohtani because you think he might not be worth the money is more defensible, but still pretty hard to actually build a strong case against when you take into account all the other ways Rogers will make money off him.
jaysthebest Verified Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Do you guys actually think Ohtani will come to the Jays?? His agent is just using us as leverage as every other team does to the Jays.
jaysthebest Verified Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Don't be disappointed when Ohtani signs with the Dodgers next Monday.

RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I would be elated with Candelario + Hoskins Its bot bad at all. Solid. Elated for that is crazy though. I'd be elated for Ohtani lol
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I would be elated with Candelario + Hoskins I'm not really giving this Ohtani stuff any time or emotional investment. I'm jaded from too many years of the Jays being used as pawns. I will celebrate when and if the time comes.

It’s the money. God forbid something goes south, Jays aren’t NYY to absorb it. It would f*** things up beyond belief
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I'm all for Ohtani, and definitely think it would create a huge buzz and excitement around this franchise, for this city and country overall. It's a big contract and if things don't pan out the way you like, it's a huge contract for a team like the Blue Jays to absorb after. Ohtani is almost 30-years-old which some people forget. If Ohtani doesn't return to being the pitcher he was, you're paying $50-60M for a DH or corner OF above 30 over the next 10 years.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I bet $20 on the Jays signing Ohtani, which pays $75. Buys me a couple rounds of beers out at a bar!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 It’s the money. God forbid something goes south, Jays aren’t NYY to absorb it. It would f*** things up beyond belief Bichette seems to want to test free agency, and Vlad wants an extension but isn’t worth giving one to yet (at least not for the money/years he’d want). There’s a good chance both are gone after 2025, so there should be some flexibility there from a payroll standpoint. Ohtani making $50m a year in his 30’s wouldn’t be ideal from a team building standpoint when he’s in his declining years but if you want elite free agents (and it doesn’t get more elite than him) then you kinda have to live with the dead money in the end. With that said, if the Jays pull off the miracle and sign Ohtani, then they need to step their player development game up. They’ll need some cheap young impact players to fill up some spots that they won’t have as much payroll room to fill via free agency.

He's an entirely unique player in that a team can make money off him in ways they can't off other players. How much is that? Who knows. You'd think a multi media conglomerate like Rogers would be better positioned to max out that potential revenue. I'm not going to go through mental gymnastics of trying to figure out if he can possible put up enough wins to justify his ridiculous contract. If the Jays somehow signed him, which I still think is a long shot, I'd just pop the champagne and enjoy the moment.

Yeah Rogers will make a lot of money off him, but we don't know the exact numbers and how much. We're not on the board of directors for Rogers who are crunching the numbers as we speak. Like I said I'm all for signing for Ohtani. Will definitely enjoy it and pop open an expensive bottle of Japanese whiskey if he signs here! If the contract is 10 + years at 50-60M AAV, it will be concerning considering he will be 30 next season and could only be possibly a DH/corner OF. If Ohtani does sign here, you have to go all in over these next two seasons when you have Bichette under club control, Ohtani still in his prime and Gausman in top form. You want to take advantage of the early years in Ohtani's contract. And like Glory said in his post, moving forward the Jays will need to step their player development game up so they have a pipeline of arms and players coming up at the end of this decade.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Pass on $50M + AAV for Ohtani. Its the biggest sugar high ever. Unicorn and probably best player I've ever seen but for a number of reasons including being 30 and arm injury history don't want him. (I also thought Semien and Seagar signings by TEX were insane and flags fly forever. So what do I know)

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Ohtani is a very special player and to see him in Blue Jays blue would be a real treat. Every game would be filled to the rafters. Rogers Media Corp seems to really want this guy. Good for business.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 lol... you're just trying to be the contrarian. 90% of the time, but not here. Honestly I’ve defended many of the 10+ year contracts but that’s when it’s an owner that’s of the Mark Cuban mold, committed to winning if its means seeing $0 at the bottom line and growing the brand. Jays are bean counters and I prefer they stick to the 4-6 year deals
