jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 I get the feeling that they Jays are prepared to open the pocket book even more this upcoming season. Not just the controversial end to last season but they can clearly see the window closing. Is Ohtani a possibility if the number is right? Not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if we take another step in the luxury tax threshold. Jays all in 2024! I think Atkins does make a big move or two this offseason. Lineup will be the priority. I could see the Jays being aggressive in any Juan Soto discussions. They will also sign a bat with some pop like Teo, Pederson, Soler or Hoskins.
BatFlip Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 Yeah obviously if Belt would cost the same as Votto. It's possible Votto has some magic left in the bat and would be a nice feel good story if he was able to win a World Series in his hometown. From a business perspective, he would be a really nice fit with the Jays as a part-time 1B/DH/lefty bat. Jays definitely could market him and would sell a lot of jerseys. I still think he ends back with the Reds or he retires. eh... not sure how much magic is left in that bat. He had a hell of a career, but there would be a lot of unsold jerseys by year-end.
BatFlip Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 They dumped Bass because he sucks. Yup, he was garbage.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 eh... not sure how much magic is left in that bat. He had a hell of a career, but there would be a lot of unsold jerseys by year-end. Yeah his last two seasons have been brutal. Was a beast in 2021, but chances of him returning close to that form in 2024 is very unlikely. He would only be good as a last resort if the Jays were unable to sign a 1B/DH type bench bat and if they had the roster space.
wamco Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 After the season jays were rumored to be receiving insurance money from the ryu contract. Hopefully that is used this year or perhaps it was kept in mind when doing last year’s payroll. Shapiro said he expected payroll to be “about the same “ this year. I don’t know if I read that and automatically assume a 15m increase to payroll. (Of course he wouldn’t announce that either)
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Author Posted November 5, 2023 NPB’s Orix Buffaloes Approve Posting Of Yoshinobu Yamamoto By Nick Deeds | November 5, 2023 at 8:42am CDT Shortly after losing Game 7 of the Japan Series to the Hanshin Tigers, the Orix Buffaloes announced this morning that they have approved the posting of ace right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto to MLB. As noted by MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the next step in the process is the formal declaration of a posting window, which will last 45 days upon being announced. Morosi suggests that the announcement could occur in the coming days. Yamamoto has long been expected to enter MLB free agency via the posting system this offseason, though today’s news marks the first official confirmation from the Buffaloes that Yamamoto will be posted. Yamamoto, 25, has established himself as the clear best pitcher in Japan in recent years. Since making his NPB debut as an 18-year-old in 2017, Yamamoto has posted a career ERA of just 1.72 with a 26.4% strikeout rate. Incredible as those career numbers are, Yamamoto has been even more impressive over the last three seasons: from 2021-23, Yamamoto has posted an eye-popping 1.42 ERA with a 27.4% strikeout rate against a walk rate of just 5.1% across 557 2/3 innings of work. His most recent performance saw him record 14 strikeouts while allowing one run on nine hits and zero walks in a complete game for the Buffaloes in Game 6 of the Japan Series. Scouts have widely regarded Yamamoto as a starter with top-of-the-rotation potential in MLB. Prior to the 2023 season, scouts suggested to Joel Sherman of the New York Post that Yamamoto could be considered a “full grade” ahead of right-hander Kodai Senga, who landed with the Mets on a five-year, $75MM pact last offseason in his first foray into stateside ball. Senga’s age-30 rookie season in MLB proved to be an excellent one, as he posted a 2.98 ERA and 3.63 FIP while striking out 202 batters in 166 1/3 innings of work. Needless to say, the idea of an ace nearly six years Senga’s junior widely regarded as the better pitcher of the two being available via free agency this offseason has to be nothing short of tantalizing for MLB clubs. MLBTR contributor Dai Takegami Podziewski took a look at Yamamoto in the latest installment of his NPB Players To Watch series back in September, shortly after Yamamoto threw the second no-hitter of his career in front of several MLB scouts. Yamamoto’s unusual youth for a free agent and incredible upside figure to make him one of the most coveted free agents of the 2023-24 offseason. In MLBTR’s most recent Free Agent Power Rankings back in August, we had Yamamoto as the third ranked free agent to be on the board, behind only Shohei Ohtani and Cody Bellinger. The market for Yamamoto is expected to be among the most competitive of the offseason, with the Giants, Mets, and Cardinals among the reported suitors in addition to the Phillies, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Dodgers, Tigers, and Diamondbacks, all of whom he’s been publicly connected to on some level or other throughout his final season before moving stateside. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/npbs-orix-buffaloes-approve-posting-of-yoshinobu-yamamoto.html

Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Author Posted November 5, 2023 Then they need to get this guy: Yes and to think after all those years playing in Japans top league, He is the same age as Strider, Hunter Brown, Cole Ragans, Bryce Miller, Graham Ashcraft, and our beloved Alek Manoah. In other words he is still soo young. I agree he would be a nice off season catch for sure.

Not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if we take another step in the luxury tax threshold. Jays all in 2024! There’s lots of reasons why Ohtani to Toronto makes sense from a baseball and business POV. He won’t be pitching next season, Jays wouldn’t need him to pitch until 2024 anyways. He would be the DH. jays need one. He’s a left handed hitter too. Toronto, while not a major market in the same tier as LA or New York, is still a major international market. He would get all the benefits of that kind of market without the same level of personal media circus. Toronto could easily offer the best kind of contract to him, if they include shares of the Rogers Corp. Rogers would instantly have a marketing wet dream for their entire business that would make Vlads marketing appeal look like peanuts. There’s just no reason for the Jays not to be in the fight for Ohtani right up until the end.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 I’d like to have Green but unless he accepts the one year deal I think he is gone. Just too much risk given our holes to fill for a guy who just came back at 2 or 3 years at those AAVs for a RP.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 Great PR but a waste of money. Depends on the amount. Cheap enough and hope for another dead cat bounce by Votto. He has had a couple. But agree it’s fluff and a long shot.

Though the team will have far more info on his health and also the state of his stuff post-TJ. I wonder if there is wiggle room to sweeten the pot on the 1 year player option though. Maybe tack on another player option with a 1-2 million dollar buyout.

I suspect Green would actually be better off if the team were to decline all of the options as he'd likely be able to get a better deal through free agency after successfully returning to MLB this past season.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 5, 2023 Author Posted November 5, 2023 The Chad Green contract is interesting, just a reminder how its written: 2024-2026 Conditions 3 year, $27M club option ($9M/year), if declined: 1 year, $6.25M player option, if declined: 2 year, $21M club option ($10.5M/year) 2024 Player Option Escalates $250,000 each for 40, 45, 50, 55 appearances 2024 2 year, $21M club option Escalates $500,000 each for 60, 65 games in 2023 I like Green and I think if they dont take the 3 year this will all be declined. The 3 year option doesnt look like it has any escalators at all.

The next two years is kind of "the window" anyway.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 6, 2023 Author Posted November 6, 2023 Anyone know anything about this guy, I know he played for Cuba in the World Baseball Classic but thats all I know. We are one of the teams linked to him. Or are we gonna be linked to everyone again this off season.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Rodríguez has intriguing stuff: ~95 mph FF w/ cut action similar to Andre Pallante's FF, which generates tons of ground balls ~83 mph high-spin sweeper w/ solid depth & sweep (127 Stuff+ in WBC via @enosarris) Rodríguez worked as RP in NPB, but may be viewed as SP by MLB teams (Pasted from twitter)
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 I'd like Joey Votto on the team in the same way I liked Dave Parker on the team back in 1991. Limited to pinch hitting late in the year and only if the Jays need an extra bat. Hopefully with a 130 OPS+ over that limited span.
wamco Verified Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Totally forgot dave Parker was a jay. 130 ops + to boot.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 I saw joc rumored at 1/13. What do LGJ and teo get? My not final solution if only signing FA would be to trade vlad: -sign bellinger , jd martinez, joc pederson and longoria which I think could be 36m (25 AAV for bellinger). Saves 10m for deadline if you cut Cimber and espinal. How many DH spots do you think we have?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 That's quite the pitch count he ran for that game. I made the mistake of opening up the Facebook comments on a post about his final game. There were literally 138 straight comments about how he'll love coming to the US, where he'll be pulled after the 5th innings and 73 pitches. There is a massive % of the population (mostly between the ages of 40-60 I assume, as that's who uses Facebook) who is not adapting or understanding any of the logic/strategy behind when to pull starting pitchers.
