connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 D'backs are a team made for the playoffs and their FO is the best in MLB. Clearly. The problem Jim is there’s a bunch of GMs that know about building a playoff roster. Philly has a roster built to win, ATL has a roster built to win, Tex has one, Houston has one.. all you can do is keep up with the Jones’ like AZ did. Take your chances When you go into the playoffs with limp ass noodle bats, you go home real quick

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2023 Author Posted October 29, 2023 Toronto's bats and offense were better than there's this season, meat. No matter how many times you try and refute this and move the goalposts, you can't change this fact. Please shut up now... It's not black and white. It can be debatable. Blue Jays had more bats with a wRC+ over 100 so yeah they had a deeper lineup, but nobody really had a huge standout year offensively. A lot of Jays bats like KK, Springer, Biggio, Chapman, Jansen and Kirk were pretty much all around 100 wRC+ and had meh numbers offensively. Belt was outstanding, but he was used strictly in a platoon role and only played against RHP. Bo was really the only bat who performed at a high level offensively on a day-to-day basis. Vladdy wasn't that bad as well according to wRC+ but still a huge underperformance for what was expected and could have been better in other areas. D'Backs got an MVP performance from Corbin Carroll and both Ketel Marte and Christian Walker had really strong years offensively. Their top 3 bats were better than the Jays top 3 bats this season offensively IMO. The rest of the D'Backs lineup was meh, but even a player like Gurriel who just had a 106 wRC+ also provided 24 HR's while someone like KK who had a similar wRC+ of 104 just hit 8 HR's and only played against RHP. Overall, both lineups weren't anything special in 2023. D'Backs got better performances from their star players, whereas the star players on the Blue Jays like Vlad and Springer underperformed. If this Blue Jays lineup was hitting like they did in 2021 (even minus Semien), they have a much better lineup.

deanmike Verified Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 It's all positivity trolling, no one seriously believes this year's team had an offense fit for a contender.. All we can do is hope the Jays offense is fixed next year.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 AZ was better with RISP… That was the # issue with the Jay’s offense. And the Jays still had a better offense? Anyway, RISP is negligible, it's not a skill set. Jays had a better 2nd half w/RISP than the Snakes in the second half it doesn't matter. Jays scored 1 run and s*** the bed, there's no arguing that. D-Backs crawled into the PS ice cold lost 4 straight. Guess what? it didn't matter, they went on a heater and are still riding the wave, it's perfect timing. The best thing that happened to them in this post-season is that influx of nasty from the 7th inning on, they've been #1 this PS, my hat's off to them, this is baseball.

Guys that have been there before, they’ve been super clutch bats in the playoffs. Just not with the Jays.
deanmike Verified Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I do. The Jays were definitely a serious contender. But too many players underperformed. Projecting as a contender in the preseason is different than actually seeing the players underperform projections over a full 162 and still believing it. I seriously doubt you thought they were still a contender once the regular season ended. Preseason I'll give you, they were projections darlings for sure.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 I've said before the Jays may have lucked out not acquiring anyone at the deadline since Davis Schneider did more than probably any deadline pickup would have, but Pham was such a no brainer for this team. Cost nothing to get him, and he was a RH OF bat with some pop, which is exactly what the Jays needed.

Very true, but 16 AB's is a really small sample. f*** these last 2 years have been depressing. Ughh...

The experience can start to collide with the aging curve.

It’s already established fact this is the case with pitching. Well I hope it is
Marew Verified Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 We scored the same amount of runs as diamondbacks but let in 90 more runs than them. They were built from the ground up solely to squeak into the postseason and dominate each round against inferior teams that A) were built for only regular season stolen base/hr records/team slugging records/get kershaw into HOF at all costs couldn’t pace themselves to keep up with diamondbacks.

Again, this is just lazy grade school “burns”… Nobody is going to build a roster to be the favorite to beat the Braves. It’s a matter of giving yourself a punchers chance

The GM built a roster designed to beat the braves and there is no argument against that. They will have 2 championships in a 1/4 century of existence while we continue to play a few wildcard games each year.

It’s already established fact this is the case with pitching. Well I hope it is You D-Bag fanboys keep pimping Carroll, Marte and Walker but let's face it, they are pretty similar to Vlad, Bo and Belt no matter who is ultimately better. Our trio probably projected better but theirs was slightly better this year due to Vlad's down year (a down year where he still hit about as well as Walker did). So I look forward to the results of your study but even if having top heavy hitting is better, their top 3 is pretty damn close to ours anyway. And I'm talking hitting only not baserunning and defense (which helps the D-Backs best players' WAR greatly). And why cap it at top 3? Why not Top 4 or 5 to determine who has the more top heavy hitting? Oh yeah, you guys keep bringing up the "top 3" because it fits your narrative. If you expand it to 4 and 5 then all of the sudden we probably gain the edge in "top heavy" hitting.

Sil disproving his own point by showing how our number 9 hitter is about as good as the guy who spent most of the year batting #5 for them lol

Usually I wouldn’t give much credence to splits, but with rookies, one can say maybe they figured something out. I’m consistent with this because I thought Grayson counted as a big arm. Wasn’t right on that one
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Though I was wrong against positional adjustment, I’m not a fan of league adjusts. They’re using the same ball. Mlb changes its balls and that can explain yearly changes, but affects both leagues. Top guys in AL hit just fine. There’s not better Aces in the AL. Not a fan of using wRC+ to determine big bats. Needs to be OPS

Needs to be OPS wRC and OPS correlate to each other almost perfectly though... so saying you prefer one over the other doesn't really mean anything at the end of the day. Also, youd never really compare a + stat to an non + stat. You'd want to compare OPS+ to wRC+, not wRC+ to OPS.

I’m not claiming to know. Obviously there’s an adjustment if Walker .830 OPS is almost same as Vlad’s .780 or whatever Top AL hitters did just fine. Term is also a conservative and should be against the principle of adding to Vlads stats. It’s saying, there wasn’t enough good hitters in the AL, so let me give you something for free
