I think the jays need to invest some of that team budget into scouting and coaching. More specifically, coaches and scouts with reputations of success with player development.

 

It seems like this management group are trying to unearth the next big name in the respective circles.

 

Tear the team down and start over. But with that record budget, invest In proven scouting, proven coaching at all levels.

 

Are we a development org or a big time destination org that all names flock to?

 

I’m just so sick of this team. It’s been two years of this. I will be happy to see Atkins and Shapiro go. Hire proven executives who hire proven scouting staff.

 

The system looks bereft of star power.

 

The team looks moribund.

 

Thanks Mark and Ross. Your quest to help the defence has ruined all the excitement this team had at one time.

What a spectacular decimation of an entertaining team. Bo and Vlad look so average. Hire back Dante Bichette. Fire Mattingly and Martinez. Fire Schneider. Fire Atkins. Fire Farrell. Fire Shapiro.

 

Shapiro probably soaks up a ton of that Front Office budget. He's supposed to be the guy leading the charge to fill the scouting and coaching ranks with studs.

 

And if he can't do it, he needs to hire someone who can. But in order to get some proven stud, they'll have to pay top dollar. Can the org pay top dollar to both Shapiro and a proven GM?

 

Might need to give Shapiro the boot to give us an organizational restructure. And in order to get that proven name, they might want that President title anyway.

It occurred to me that I blame Springer for everything because...

 

-Bo will be end up being Bo

-Vlad will be an above average hitter even if he mainly hits groundballs

-Jano will be great if he can just stay healthy

-Schneider's sample size is enough to say he's an above avg hitter at the MLB-level

-Turner should be above average if he doesn't fall off a cliff due to age

-Rest of the lineup is what it is

 

Springer is the broken cog in the wheel. Eye tests tells me he's not salvageable unless there's an obvious injury that's he's playing through. Jays should bite the bullet and dump him.

Vlad said in March he wanted to bring back the home run jacket.

 

The Blue Jays killed the jacket before 2023 began. John Schneider said:

 

"It’s time to go from a talented, fun team to a talented, fun team that’s going to scrap and claw and find ways to win games," Schneider said. "It’s a fine line between silly and fun. There’s something to be said about acting like you’ve been there."

 

Perhaps it has nothing to do with the jacket itself but it is curious that when they took away the home run jacket the team stopped hitting home runs. The jacket is silly, but there may be something to be said about incentives and fun and the lizard brains of the adult children who play professional baseball. When you saw the team celebrating with the HR jacket, didn't you want to be part of that? Experience that?

Yep, there was an over correct on the Barrio. We loved it on the late run in '21 but then it got stale and fans starting looking for things to blame.

 

I never liked Montoyo getting in on putting the jacket on guys.

 

Leave that to the players, but honestly who cares about the f***ing HR jacket if they want to use it.

Yeah. It’s funny bc it’s like they got into trouble for having too much fun when they under

performed. Now they're underperforming even worse and you wonder if something like that (not necessarily the same thing) would be good to build an identity and get guys out of the .200 2 rut

I was getting sick of the jacket too but in hindsight, it was never the issue. John Schneider's quote from back then is very cringe now.

 

It was annoying seeing Gurriel and Teoscar bumble around on defense and then goof around with the jacket but that really had nothing to do with the jacket and everything to do with poor defensive skills. And I guess I can see why the brass may have thought that Vlad needed to mature, since he dropped 3 WAR from '21 to '22 while dancing with The Barrio all season long. But that was a flop too - thesis refuted by 2024 and the first quarter of 2024.

I always thought they just needed a real leader to show them the way and that is what they are totally missing this year. I thought getting Ohtani would shame Vladdy into playing up to his capability but any team for which Vladdy is the leading talent, is destined for failure.

Gurriel has actually turned himself into a really solid defender, it's just that his offensive abilities have seemingly gone downhill in recent seasons. Teoscar has also produced really solid metrics in right field in recent seasons as well.

Kind of what I suggested. He (and they) have physical tools but just need someone to set the environment to make them work. The Jays are lacking a leader.

Over recent seasons they've posted really similar sprint speeds so Votto might actually be slower upon returning from the ankle injury.
