What the F is Manoah on a major league rotation? Does the org not have any idea? LOL

The pitching lab is good the pitching lab is useless. What a silly debate.

The real discussion is our success, or lack thereof, in drafting/acquiring/developing rotation and pen arms organizationally over the last 6-7 years.

I can't imagine a "pitching lab" could be a bad thing, even if its not a silver bullet. I don't care how they do it, I only care about the results.

Try again. The pitching lab just came online something like a year and a half ago when the new player development complex opened up.

did it really though? or was it always part of the High Performance Department? that's why I mentioned the 7+ years that the hpd has been in existence

Well that's the idea of this facility, for pitching and player development, they've now addressed it, the earlier development of this teams pitching has been talked about for years and rightfully so, hopefully it comes to fruition with some of these athletes. Our pitching has quietly been getting better as Laika said earlier, it's going to take time. I for one am sick of us wasting mass amounts of payroll on FA and trade, it isn't sustainable.

The silly thing is what connor and jaysblue and the like posted.

Huh? The new training facility opened in February 2021.

Did the lab help Berrios rebound this year? How about the new Tim Mayza we have? Did he change the break/speed on his slider in the lab? Did it help Ricky T add several MPH? Did it help the bundle of minor league relivers having a lot of success this year? I don't think any of us know because there's little information about who's in it and how it's being used. That's why I'm not sure how people make any definitive opinion at this point.

You tell by looking at the major league talent - it's the only sure way.

I was really referring to the High Performance Department that started way back when the current FO took over. So we have to wait a few more years to see what the Lab produced - that will be 9/10 years with this FO that's unacceptable IMO

Ricky T is hurt isn't he? there's no proof that it helped Mayza a 31 year old MLB veteran, Berrios was pretty much a stud when we got him

Says to look at the ML talent, then dismisses that Berrios and Mayza are significantly better this year than last year. Got it.

Don't we have one of the best pens in baseball this year?

Riding almost exclusively sinkers worked for Mayza, but predictability is death in baseball. His ERA rose 1.44 points in the second half last year as hitters began to hone in on the sinking fastball. After the Jays were eliminated in the playoffs, Mayza and the team’s pitching coaches sat down to create an offseason plan. The priority: create a better slider.

Do you think they sat down at a Tim Hortons and worked on his slider in the parking lot? Or do you think they worked on his slider at the lab, where they'd have access to individual pitch data?

They did the same for a lot of guys namely Berrios before they left for the offseason, he showed up early at camp to work with the coaches and techs as well. I'm surprised people don't think they'd use this data for their MLB players. lol

Yes. When I mean "acquire" I'm not talking about a boatload of FAs of that are established. I'm not talking about Yimi for 2/11 or established pen arms we get for trading Teo. I am referring to finding some undeveloped talent that we develop into value. With whatever method.

Our rotation, except broken Alek, are all established FAs and our pen home grown effective arms are Mayza, Romano (rule 5) and maybe Pearson.

LOL. I am just joshing man. Its all good. I agree a million percent with the bold.

I got 0 against spending Rogers dough on players but the best teams usually always have a combination of home grown & developed and/or young cheaper talent mixed in. Think about the ol' Jays and Cone, Winfield, Molitor Stewart and even Morris. They sprinkled them into the core.

Yup, Pat Gillick was a Man amongst Boys.

"Mayza and the team’s pitching coaches sat down to create an offseason plan. The priority: create a better slider." (your bold and not mine)

This is wonderful but every pitcher on every major league team sits down with their coaches to create an off season plan. This is like saying he came into camp "in the best shape ever". Still valuable and good he's working on improving, keep in mind Mayza's outings by leverage: 18 Low, 6 medium and 6 high

I am intrigued by the Pitching Lab though and look forward to seeing what it can produce - the fact that they are modeling it after college ball is a good sign - it's what the Dodgers did to get their hitting development back on track a few years ago. Should have done this in 2016 - might have produced more major league talent by now.
