Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 No idea about bonuses. But I feel bonuses are a terrible way for evaluating talent. They're both the same FV on fangraphs. Vargas had a better season in the DSL @ 17 than Bonilla is currently having. Vargas was #10 on the Marlins list, Bonilla is #11 on ours. Until there are a couple of years of stats and further scouting the bonuses are probably relevant as presumably they were based on a lot of scouting and there isn't enough info to over-ride them. Like what is more important 6 weeks of rookie ball/DSL stats or draft/international signee ranking (which in turn would determine the bonus)? That being said Vargas is putting up really good numbers and if he is already ranked 11th in their system that seems to be an extremely risky guy to trade for a reliever.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Padres are listening on Soto…not sure how seriously. Probably just the usual trade rumour clickbait since it came from Heyman. F it. Might as well add Hader to the deal too.
Ray Verified Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Wonder what the O's are going to do about their starting pitching situation. - Lance Lynn and Lucas Giolito traded - Shohei Ohtani isn't moving - Shane Bieber out indefinitely - Stroman, Cease, Snell, unlikely to be dealt. I guess they can look to Jordan Montgomery, Michael Lorenzen, Jack Flaherty, or Miles Mikolas. Maybe Eduardo Rodriguez although his opt-out makes it tough to gather a value on him. Not a great market to be looking for top of the rotation arms.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Lance Lynn & Joe Kelly to the Dodgers Bob Nightengale of USA Today now reporting that the Dodgers are cautiously optimistic about getting a deal done for both him and Joe Kelly. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic adds that the two sides are close to an agreement. No details have been reported of what the White Sox would receive in return. Lynn has a 10-team no-trade clause, with the Dodgers on it, but Joel Sherman of The New York Post reports he’s willing to waive it.

Best they can do is add depth at this point unless they want to shell out and take Verlander. They have no pay roll so they could absord that salary better than most.

IMHO, that 10 team list was just intended to squeeze some extra money out of those teams. Most teams listed from what I read are usually the big spenders. Smart move on his agents part.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Why isn't Stroman going to be available now? He just has a player option for next year at $21M, which is solid value. Verlander and Scherzer are interesting options. I f***ing love those 2 and would want them on the mound for any playoff game. Absolute legends. I actually hope both are traded so we can see them in the playoffs this year.

Keep in mind Stroman has been awful recently as well.

"Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Mets have thus far received “moderate” interest in Verlander but have not had meaningful enough talks to even approach the three-time Cy Young winner about waiving his no-trade clause. Scherzer has drawn less interest, per Martino."

Jon Heyman of The New York Post says the Dodgers are finalizing a deal for both Lynn and Kelly. James Fegan of The Athletic confirms that Kelly is indeed in the deal. Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the White Sox will receive pitching prospects Nick Nastrini and Jordan Leasure, as well as outfielder Trayce Thompson.

Ray Verified Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Dodgers get: Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly White Sox get: Nick Nastrini (AA SP), Jordan Leasure (AA RP), Trayce Thompson Nastrini ranked #54 on BP's Top 100 coming into 2023. Has a 4.04 ERA in AA, but some good K-rates. Seems like an overpay on the Dodgers part to get Lynn and his 6.47 ERA (plus big salary). And Joe Kelly has been pretty bad too.

Talent /= production to date Lance Lynn has a 4.02 xFIP and projects to be pretty good. Lots of bad luck in his FIP/ERA so far. Similar things can be said for Kelly. He was one of the better RP available. MLB trade deadline is a real seller's market now. The expanded WC has made a lot of mediocre teams into buyers.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Lance Lynn is much better than his numbers indicate. He had an awful start to the Season. Probably will be good pickup.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 You're right that bonus amounts would be a silly evaluation tool, but as a team who just spent that much money on him, I wouldn't be trading him 6 months into his development. After spending that much to get him, I'd want to be the one to develop him, at least for the first 2-3 seasons for sure. That said, if he was a side piece in a more blockbustery type of deal, like for a trade involving someone like Luid Robert Jr coming back... sure. But certainly not as a piece in a rental reliever trade. This is like saying the entire system of international signings is just random and guys are getting 4 million for no reason and it means nothing. What is wrong with you guys? You are saying that players like Bonilla who are ranked as a top 5 prospect in the class and are given 4 million are all of a sudden to be evaluated based a few weeks of DSL at bats. We aren't talking about 21 year olds in AA. For anyone drafted or signed in the last year, and who has only a few weeks of Rookie ball, and is under 19 the signing bonus is important.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 The high bonus guys are likely to keep a lot of their value. It's more that low bonus guys can shoot up the rankings quick, and sometimes meet or surpass the big bonus babies.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 The Dodgers are so deep on the mound they can afford to let Nastrini go, just young.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 I want Hader if nothing else to prevent the Orioles from getting him. But he is exactly what we need in the back end of the Bullpen. Can remove Romano out of the Closer role.

Ray Verified Member Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Kendall Graveman back to the Astros The White Sox estate sale continues. For Korey Lee Seems steep. Lee has good minor league numbers and is probably a decent starting-level catcher at the major league level.
