I missed the whole game, like I’m gonna scroll backwards in the gdt…lol

Don't hijack threats just because you're being shellfish.

Jesus, go to the gym for an hour after the 3rd inning….missed the entire remainder of the game. Lol

Like Billy Beane.

Any word on when Jansen is due back?

New Player Note Today, 7:22 pm

Danny Jansen (groin) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Friday with Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: Jansen ran the bases on Wednesday and is aiming to return to Toronto's catching mix early next week. He's been out since late May due to a left groin strain.

More: Kaitlyn McGrath

Remember the first couple weeks when we were worried Bassit couldn’t handle the pitch clock and Belt couldn’t hit a fastball anymore?

Maybe we were being a bit too reactionary

Go back at that time, it's funny, usual suspects though.

Bassitt did struggle with the pitch clock but then after 2 games, he made the pitch clock his bitch lol. It actually helps him now.

The 8 pitch mix makes the hitter guess and then the time he spends just wandering around before settling in to pitch makes the hitter second-guess.

All the mindgames.

Reading this thread and it seems like people way undervalue Romano and have this erroneous thought that elite closers never fail. Jordan Romano has a career save percentage that is higher than those of Diaz, Pressley, Bednar, Hader, Clase and Williams. He's only 1.5 % below Mo. Elite closers still fail 10-15% of the time...people need to realize that.

Yeah people are pretty stupid. Since 2021 he is 11th best RP in WAR and 8th best in ERA.

Emmanuel Clase leads the league in blown saves this year and he's perhaps the best RP in baseball (best since 2021; best projected ERA probably). Felix Bautista is tied for the 2nd most blown saves and he is a good alternate candidate for best RP in baseball.

The likelihood that the Houston Astros would score one run against Chris Bassitt in the 9th inning, after seeing him multiple times already that game, is probably 2-3 times higher than the likelihood they will score one run against Romano.

I think it's just anecdotal and people hang their negative emotions on specific memories and specific pitching decisions. One thing in the modern game that makes people uncomfortable is that many pitchers spam breaking balls; there is this notion that breaking balls are wild and fastballs are easier to control. While that used to be true, it's simply not anymore for most pitchers.

I wonder what the stats say for pitchers facing a lineup a 4th time.

You don't even have to go that far, you can look at the same game. Dubon had 2 hits already off Bassit and Yordan had a homerun. And Altuve is Altuve

Oh - so there was virtually nothing that suggesting running Bassitt out there for the 9th was a good idea. Got it. I wonder if people suppress their desire for old school nostalgia long enough to absorb that. Probably not.

I mean it WOULD have been cool to see him spin a CG win over the Astros while throwing under 90 pitches.

Just too bad it was the top of the order due up in the 9th and not the 6-8 hitters.

It's probably not good.

Here's Bassitts though. Not really enough data to make any judgements on the 4th time through, but 1-3 seems to be little meaningfuol difference.

Either way, with that top of the order and how theyd been hitting him it was probably a good pull.

Jesus - I have to expect there aren't many starters in baseball who navigate through a lineup like that - with little to no difference between the 1st and 3rd time through. I guess having 17 pitches to choose from helps?

Probably doesnt hurt, that's for sure.

The elite starters usually tend to. Now obviously Bassitt isn't one of those guys, but that consistency really is quite remarkable from him. Also explains how he's able to get into the 7th inning so often, he can really mix it up.

Kevin Gausman's ... for comparison's sake

Also much better than most SPs

I'm going to guess Kikuchi and Berrios fare far worse third time through

And guys like Verlander are famously great later in games.

This is his whole career though. Gausman prior to 2020 was an average starter, from then onwards he's among the elites. I would guess his numbers are much better since.

Gausman is basically pitching like prime Roger Clemens right now.

We talking late 80's/early 90's Clemens or Blue Jays Clemens* ??

I don't think we've seen another dominate starter like Gausman since Doc or Clemens on the Jays.

Feels nice having an actual ace
