Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 What the f*** was that game? The most un-clutch display of baseball ever conceived turns into a clutch win by Jansen ...I really hate this game sometimes. Bassitt has been a beast lately. I see why they brought him on. No f***ing around with this guy. Play to win or get the he'll out of the way...love it. Romano back to FB dominance. That's how a closer closes. That's because 'being clutch' isn't a thing, or a skill in general. Luck is a massive component in a baseball game.

The guys who hit best in "clutch" situations are the same ones who hit best all the time. That said, I think all he means is - watching the team go 0-16 with RISP before Jansen finally did his thing is sure frustrating to watch. They were terrible in clutch situations last night.

Clutch very much is a thing. I have no idea if it is a measurable stat, however their are certain guys that have the ability to execute under tense late game pressure and there are guys that clearly can not. Every team I have been on yu knew who those guys are and aren't and it isn't always the star of the team.

I don't have exact numbers to back this up but it feels like the team had a lot of rockets finding their way into Yankees gloves over the course of the game. At least one of these was with runners in scoring position as Kirk's line drive in the later innings leading to a double play against was an example.

If clutch was a real thing it would be something that could be duplicated year after year after year, and game after game after game. It's not. People love to point at Ortiz as an example, but he wasnt some otherworldly savant in clutch situations, he just hit like he always hit. Playoffs are nothing but a random bunch of tiny sample sizes. Of all the series he played in, he hit above his career OPS in 9 of them and below his career OPS in 9 of them. Players hit how they hit, they cannot control the situations, nor the narratives that people attach to them after.

Outside of a VERY few players, it's extremely random from year to year, month to month. VERY few ever consistently hit better than their normal in 'clutch' situations.
mphenhef Verified Member Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Some very odd moves that inning. Thought they’d walk Kirk for sure… and then Jansen after that. In glad they didn’t I can't imagine how but maybe they really were scared vlad was in play?
