G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 There are only a few pitchers that actually wear single digits. I was reading an article and I believe Blake Snell is the only all star pitcher with a single digit. I know I'm in the extreme minority here but to me if a pitcher wears a single digit, he's not a real pitcher. What does a 0 mean then Cause this All-Star pitcher wears it
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2023 Author Posted February 14, 2023 ST has arrived! I hope you all enjoyed killing the time with a little Blue Jays nostalgia. I'll try and start this up again in early November, so we can count right down from 99 Ryu.

The article I based my comment on was updated for Snell only. So it's 2 pitchers. Still don't like it. Baseball appeals to a number of people for different reasons. For some, like me, the history and tradition mean something.

When baseball started, there were no planes, no television / internet, etc. The closest thing to remaining the same is the Catholic Church. And we know how that's going.

Change without respect for tradition is not evolution, it's erosion. Things like the catcher using those arm bands to send a signal to the pitcher what to call is an example of evolution as its an improvement on the communication system already part of the game. When the hitters get a message from the pen on what pitch is coming, and other messages from the bench, then its erosion, and I'll stop following the game.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 You're comparing pitchers wearing whatever number they choose to blatant cheating? Interesting take.

The_DH Verified Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 You're comparing pitchers wearing whatever number they choose to blatant cheating? Interesting take. You missed my point: I'm saying in both cases it does not represent the best traditions of baseball. When it becomes acceptable, I have a big problem with it. Pete Rose can't be in the HoF but the Houston Astros can outright cheat? No respect for tradition and the game. I would deny every Houston Astro HoF entry and outright consider kicking them out of the game.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 No, I just fail to see how allowing a pitcher to wear whatever number they want equates to a lack of respect for the game.
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 I was more trying to provoke a poke at Stroman being a 0 than attempting to contradict you Fair enough G -- always found that Stroman may be a good pitcher, but otherwise an annoying 2 inch pri$&. And he was in desperate need of getting a jock strap in his mouth as a muzzle.

Thousands of MLB players have cheated throughout the years - including way back when all these 'traditions' you speak of were formed. Best of luck with that and I have to think you're probably alone in the view that allowing pitchers to wear single digit numbers is bad, or even worth discussing.

There's a few articles out there about the numbers and traditions. To some people it matters. I don't pretend to be anywhere near majority opinion on this but I do think that baseball needs to look at why fans are fans.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 Not a Gretzky or Lemieux fan? Lindros Crosby McDavid It sort of became a thing for super hyped hockey prospects to pick high numbers
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 Lindros Crosby McDavid It sort of became a thing for super hyped hockey prospects to pick high numbers True, but the definition of "super hyped" started to stretch a lot. Gretzky, Crosby and McDavid are superstars and players of the age, but Victor Mete at 98? Not quite.

And then when teams have retired more than 6 numbers? Being hardcore about what series of #'s are allowed on the back of a jersey is really really arbitrary and weird.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 Football has been doing it for years. And it's stupid there too. But it wouldnt harm anyone's viewership or enjoyment of the game if next year the NFL started allowing players to wear whatever #'s they wanted regardless of position.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 With football I think it makes some sense as certain players are restricted to certain areas of the field. Such as lineman blocking downfield. So the numbers can help the ref identify those kinds of plays more quickly?

Even a lineman can line up as an eligible receiver as long as the formation is legal. And they also made changes to the rule regarding jersey #'s starting in 2021.

Then by this argument, why not let the players wear whichever uniform type they want? Why should they be limited?? If Bo wants to wear a red shirt while the rest wear white, what does that impact?
