Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 I think we should not worry too much about next year. We have a pretty big payroll and I don't believe they're at the limit. We should have a lot of contracts coming off the books no? Ryu Belt KK Chapman (That's 50 million). Hell, why not make a run at Ohtani - $440 million/10 years with $6 million leftover - sweet. I wish it was that easy.

When 90% the entire roster is in arbitration, the money off the books via FA departures is immediately chewed up by raises to the existing players.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Ohtani likely signs with the following teams in this order (most favourite to least favourite): 1) Dodgers 2) Giants 3) Yankees 4) Mariners 5) Red Sox Yankees and Giants would both be a close second IMO.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) Or I was just sleeping lol. I watched a couple of his New Hampshire games. Over the course of a full game he spiked 6 or 7 throws from Third base like actual shin breakers. He somehow only got called for one error. Multiple infield singles on plays that should have been made a by a professional baseball player. His actions and footwork look absolute s***. He was actually substantially better throwing on the run which probably due to his Shortstop background. But this isn’t even about Barger. I like Barger I hope he becomes a good Third Baseman. But if you’re telling me he’s the guy they planning to pencil in at third next year we’re in trouble. Considering he’s playing SS, 3B, and RF in AAA makes me think they are attempting to groom into a super utility player based on where the Jays think they may need him this Season. Bottom line there’s 2 notable openings next off-season 3B and 2B. Both those positions won’t be able to he filled internally. So you very much hope you can resign Chapman. You would hate to take a massive dip at both sides of the ball. You also gotta take advantage of current window to win. I gotta call shenanigans on this post, this has the feel of you trying to save face and basically making s*** up to support your point. I seriously doubt you watched a game where Barger spiked 6 or 7 throws from third base. Edited May 9, 2023 by max silver
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 But his bat is elite in that position, I'll take that all day. Vlad's just doing normal lip service, doubt he takes any type of discount, tough spot me thinks, I agree with you there. This could easily change if Bo catches a case of the yips again, but I still maintain that he looks like he's improved a massive amount defensively so far this season. Earlier in the year he was sitting -2 OAA, and through steady play over the last few weeks he's managed to bring this up to an even 0 OAA. The last two years he's ended up at -5 and -7 OAA respectively, so if he can manage to bring this to around even that's a very big change. Last season he ended up at -16 DRS, and he's sitting at +2 right now. I do wonder how much of his poor metrics were affected by the amount of shifting the team employed last season, as a good chunk of the time he was starting on the second base side of the diamond.

Almost 2000 PAs now with career 129 wRC+ and he has carried over the scorching finish of '22 to this season. Elite for SS. But you usually pay a premium for the mitt at SS. And after a certain age (usually 5 ish years from now for him) I don't know of many SS that have improved D. Not like he is starting from a high bar. So if the bat tails off much, we would be stuck with a boat anchor. Wasn't that long ago in first third of '22 some were saying he was -1 on D and +1 on O to Baez, at SS. I think his offensive performance is laying that thinking to rest. His bat to ball skills blow me away - then he tanks one 460. But Spank...and the end of the day it all depends on the price and what he/we will agree to. He is going to hit the market and sell his wares to the highest bidder me thinks.

I seriously doubt you watched a game where Barger spiked 6 or 7 throws from first base. Why would I make that up lol. I haven’t watched him ton obviously. Nobody here has but he also has a track record of errors in the minors. He looked awful whenever he was planted from Third Base. All his throws were off line except for the ones he made on the run. Could be a mental thing. Could be a feel thing. I’m sure it’s difficult to learn multiple new positions in the minors. If the goal is to have him play Third Base he should be playing exclusively Third Base. I never understood why they did that with Bo either. Bo played a ton of Second Base in the minors and yet has not play a single defensive inning at 2B in the majors. He’s not going to play SS. So put him at 3B and let him get his reps. If he needs to transition to 2B or RF later those are easier moves to make at the next level. The Scouting reports posted aren’t even him as a 3B its as a SS lol.

It's very uncommon for a third baseman to have 6 or 7 fielding plays in one game to start with. I realize that MLB and Milb batted balls tendencies would be different, but lets utilize an elite third baseman known for good range in Matt Chapman. His range would allow him to get to a ton of batted balls and hence would receive a lot of fielding opportunities. In a typical season Statcast has him credited for around 530 attempts at the ball. Assuming he started 150 games this is 3.5 attempts per game. To imagine that a third baseman that you are talking s*** about just so happened to receive 6 or 7 fielding (or maybe even more) fielding chances in a game you just happened to be watching, and then proceeded to spike 6 or 7 throws across the diamond is really hard to believe. If you had kept things more reasonable and said you saw him spike several throws across the diamond this would be reasonable and hence much easier to believe.

Considering pitchers in Jays organization don’t strike out anybody you should see how many balls are fielded lol. I didn’t just watch him one game either it was a handful. I’m not even trying to talk s*** about Barger. I just think it’s unrealistic for him to just come up and replace Matt Chapman. That would be a huge step back for the organization. I would love to be wrong but I don’t think he plays 3B for the Jays.

You know plenty of industry scouts see guys handful times a Season. Especially guys like Keith Law who make full reports on what they see and that kid could have just had a bad day. If you want accurate information follow the guys who actually follow those teams everyday.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Tough schedule coming up as as we all know PHI x2 ATL x3 NYY x4 (though I feel pretty good about this series based on current roster/play) BAL x3 TBR x4 And not much easier until June 19 when we get MIA, OAK, SFG
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 For the Jays, which guys would they be? Tons of them on Twitter but each level has beat writers or people who cover the team. Pat Malacaro would be the on for Buffalo who is also the voice of the team on the radio. I listen to most Bisons game. Well until they get out of hand. They have been very bad this Season.

With no off-days. I just don’t know how they go through that without a long man. The decision with Mitch White needs to be made soon. I would imagine White would take Jackson’s spot. And then they have to make a decision on Cimber at some point as well.

There’s no real decision to take with Mitch White. He’s 100% getting added to the MLB roster once his rehab is complete and they feel he’s fully healthy and worn out the rust from not pitching all year. The team couldn’t care less about Jay Jackson and Pop was struggling before getting injured so they’ll put him through rehab once he’s healthy and/or option him if nobody else gets injured by the time he’s back.

How many innings can Pearson go? Is he now a 1 to 1+ inning guy?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 How many innings can Pearson go? Is he now a 1 to 1+ inning guy? I think he can do 2 inning stretches, but given the history this is not a guy you want to put a lot of mileage on. So if he’s actually good give him medium-high leverage 1-2 inning stretches with enough rest and prevent him from breaking.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 How many innings can Pearson go? Is he now a 1 to 1+ inning guy? 2 tops i'd say.

I meant do they want to take his entire rehab stint to build him up as a Starter. He’s absolutely getting added but they don’t seem to be in any rush to get him on the roster.

Health has not yet been an issue to the rotation (*knock on wood) and performance has varied from god awful to elite to round out to average. The easy answer is they can currently afford to wait it out until a need arises, or if the clock runs out on his rehab then he just gets called up as the long man, 3-4 inning guy who takes over in a blowout or with a starter that needs to be taken out early but the team is still in it.
