Marew Verified Member Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 I don’t really care if I hurt a trolls feelings. f*** off to the Yankees board Are you stressed about giving 200m to bellinger ?
Gen.Disarray Old-Timey Member Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Such a Christmas spirit around here. What’s the max contract we give either bellinger or Chapman that makes you like the contract? Chapman 5/$90 mil Belli 7/$168 mil Probably doesn't get it done for either of them
Marew Verified Member Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Would definitely do 10m from Chapman. That’s like winning lotto 6/49 2x per year. Or lotto max every 5 years. If he wants anymore he is greedy.

Marew Verified Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 You're delusional of you think Chappy is signing anywhere for 10 million. So you are saying he is greedy? 10m a year to swing a stick at a ball? Jesus Christ.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 So you are saying he is greedy? 10m a year to swing a stick at a ball? Jesus Christ. No, I'm saying its delusional to think hes going to sign for well below his market value. He also catches balls hit at him; and both of those skills he does better than nearly every other 3B in the league. Hitting isn't the only skill in baseball that's worthy of being paid for. Also, please get back on your meds. Those are important for your ongoing recovery
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 Can a mod put a daily post limit? Or is a ban the only option?

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 If they sign Bellinger to anywhere near the rumored number you can put a nail into the coffin of this core winning anything within the next decade. I was all aboard signing Bellinger for his show me contract. But not his break the bank one.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 I'm fine with $25M / year for Bellinger, up to 8 years (although less would be better).

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 I'm fine with $25M / year for Bellinger, up to 8 years (although less would be better). He could be a perfect candidate for an including an opt out clause after 2 years. Front load the first 2 years, then make the last 6ish years at lesser value to almost "encourage" the opt out if he wants to hit FA again. Something like 8/200, but make the first two years 30 million each, then the last 6 would average 23.33 per. The opt out keeps him here for the final 2 years of the Vlad and Bichette arb years, and then he can choose to either opt out and test FA again if he has 2 good/great years, and if he only have some average years, then the last 6 years are at lower AAV and doesn't really hamstring the Jays financially since he and Berrios would really be the only 2 big tickets left on the roster by that time.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 Dramatic much? Not even remotely. It would be insanely stupid decision that will likely lead to better players having to be moved when hes under performing under contract.

I wouldn't be ok with it, but that's the contract that I'm expecting him to sign (8/200). If Boras has $200m in his brain then he's not settling for less than that.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 No to 8/200 but yes to 6/150 for Bellinger. For that reason, I expect him to sign for 7/175. If he's really stuck on 200 then it'll be for 9 years to bring down the AAV.

Key22 Verified Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 What players do we have that are better than Bellinger? I suppose Bo but he isn’t staying anyways The problem is if you tie up that money - it's fewer dollars next year to get someone "great." Bellinger's hitting metrics were pretty terrible last year - his old school numbers look good but outside of the park he was in - it was said that he would have only hit 16 homers. $200m for a guy who will hit 16 homers. The Jays are stuck - there is nothing out there that will truly move the needle over last year - if they resign Chapman and sign Bellinger that replaces Chapman (with himself) and Belt (Bellinger). And you still have to replace KK, Hicks, Ryu, Merrifield. I don't see what we can do to improve over last year.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 I do agree with Jonn to an extent regarding Bellinger. Jays could really regret handing him a contract close to $200M or more. The Jays aren't the Yankees who could just write off the bad contract and not care. Belly's contract if he under performs during it could setback this team in the long term and prevent them from signing other elites FA's in future offseason's. Look at Springer's contract - we've already finished Year 3 of 6 and the last 3 years of his contract look worrisome after the season he just had. Belly is a risky FA to sign to a long term contract given his streaky track record and stats. The time to sign him was last offseason like the Cubs did for one-year at $17.5M where they managed to get a 4 WAR season from him. Also, add to the fact that the Jays would be signing Belly to play in LF and occasionally in CF when Varsho isn't playing. Better to just sign Hoskins to a one-year $18-20M contract as a DH for his pop and target another bat for LF. Save that money for a better FA down the road.

Yup the problem like you says it ties up that money from being able to sign or trade for someone else down the road, next offseason or the offseason after etc. The Blue Jays aren't the Yankees who could just ignore the bad contract. If the Jays sign Belly to $200M, likely will limit them from signing another top FA and plus this team will likely be losing Bo and Vladdy after 2025.

The only stadium where Bellinger would have been expected to hit 16 home runs was in San Fransisco. Most major league parks would still place him in the low 20 range for last season typically only shaving a few home runs from his expected stats. Kiermaier is essentially being replaced with Varsho, and Merrifield is likely replaced internally as well. The Jays only received 0.2 WAR from Hicks so I don't think he needs to be replaced. Ditto for Ryu where I think the internal options will likely replace what he offered with more depth starters needing to be added. The team needs 3-4 position player additions depending on what the team plans to do for DH. The key for the Blue Jays to get better will be receiving stronger contributions from the returning roster players. Preseason projections look strong but if course the hitters still need to perform to this level for the offense to perform as required.
