Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Michael Brantley could definitely be had for a 1 year deal and he bats lefty. Steamer likes him and for all of the Jays faults they do seem to be able to keep guys on the field. Even oft injured vets like Belt and KK were able to stay mostly healthy last year. Could be a decent option. Probably not enough power but a projected .290/.360/.430 slash line would get it done if we could keep him healthy.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 I wouldn't give JDM a three-year deal. Memories of Frank Thomas are still vivid. One-year is good enough for JDM. Likely will cost $18M. Think he would be a great fit in this lineup! Who the f*** gives him 3 years? lmao... that'd be a disaster. 18 is a reach.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 It's not the be all, and projections are always conservative. It’s age. Brantley is just as old and projects well. There are other DH options who aren’t as old as well.

We need his power. I'm cool with Brantley in LF. I'd rather more power, but if we get it at DH, I'd be fine with it. Dude can hit.

The only issue with Brantley is 2024 will be his age 37 season and he's already been slowed down by injuries the past two seasons, but if I had to guess, I think he's who the Jays end up with. They've liked him in the past, and Atkins seems to like picking up players coming off down years, so he fits that criteria as well. The age issue also becomes less relevant when the DH alternatives are also around that age or older (JDM, Turner, Belt, etc).
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 The Giants have a bunch of lefty bats that could be interesting.

Reading about JDM and apparently he has legendary work ethic and vetrin presents which the team could probably use.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 What would you rather the Jays do: 1. Aroldis Chapman for 1 x $10m 2. Jordan Hicks for 3 x $40m 3. Josh Hader for 4 x $80m 4. None of the above I like our bullpen and it's depth, there are much bigger holes to fill right now. But damn I love the thought of a potential super bullpen like Hader, Romano, Green, Mayza, Swanson locking s*** down in late innings. I’d do either Chapman or Hader at that price. No on Hicks.

Bullpen actually seems like a strength and while another late inning guy like Haden would be great I’d rather spend the $ elsewhere when there are bigger holes on the roster. An upgrade in LF/3B has so much more value than the upgrade of adding hader. Romano/swanson/mayza/green/garcia is a pretty damn good back of the bullpen even if 1 or 2 of those guys get hurt/have down years. Even a guy like Pearson has some upside left.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Perhaps Vlad's bat to ball skills are a bit of a weakness when he's chasing out of the strike zone too much. Agreed. Chasing and making contact in non two strike counts
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Don't we all kind of know this with the data available?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Who the f*** gives him 3 years? lmao... that'd be a disaster. 18 is a reach. I read here just a while ago some poster suggesting it lol. He likely gets $14-15M from a team to play in the US. Jays likely have to pay him around $18M-20M to get him to sign here. Maybe I'm wrong.

I like Brantley as well as a possible replacement for Belt and suggested him earlier. Shapiro/Atkins came close to signing him a couple of years ago, so I think there is still interest in both sides to some degree. Would hope the Jays make up for that power though in the outfield and at 3B, if they planned on employing Brantley as the primary DH.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 1 year or GTFO. I'd gladly take Martinez on a 2 year deal. I think he's going to hit for another 4 or 5. He's in the mold of Nelson Cruz.

Yeah even two years I'm a little hesitant but wouldn't lose sleep over it. Jays either have to offer higher AAV or tack on an extra year.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 1 year or GTFO. Ideally, would rather sign JDM to a 1 year deal at a higher AAV instead of getting him at 2 years. Jays likely have to offer him a couple more million or tack on an extra year if competing with other teams.

It's best to just go year-to-year with these types of players when they hit that age. Even the Red Sox went year-to-year with David Ortiz in his late 30's. Would rather sign them at $18-20M per season on one-year deals versus offering multiple year deals to just save a couple million off their AAV.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Honestly, the biggest bat the Jays can add is to have Vladdy resurrect his career and put up another 6 fWAR season. Unfortunately Vladdy lacks the ability to adjust and I don't know how they can fix that.

Yes, but Oritz was a long time red sox and he wanted to play there. If you're not willing to assume some risk, you won't get the player. We're not getting Martinez on a 1 year deal. I'll gladly go 2 years on a guy who hasn't had any major injury history with a statcast page that looks like this. I'd extend to 3 with a lower AAV. He's worth the risk. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/j-d-martinez-502110?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

He also might be more valuable than the WARs suggest, if you believe in the DH penalty.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Interesting how NOBODY is talking about Shota Imanaga

His walks are dropping off as well. A 2 year deal for him would make me a little nervous but it will probably take that to get him. I'm not saying I am OUT on JD Martinez but I would tread cautiously. All the remaining FAs have warts and all of them will probably sign for more than you'd want your team to pay.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Unfortunately Vladdy lacks the ability to adjust and I don't know how they can fix that. Vlad displayed better plate discipline when he was younger so it's not like he has never shown the ability to be more patient at the plate. It looks like he tends to get frustrated when borderline calls don't go his way and comes completely out of his approach and starts hacking at everything in these instances.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Interesting how NOBODY is talking about Shota Imanaga Spanky posted some BA scouting reports on the international free agents and Imanaga was portrayed as a back of the rotation starter/bulk guy. It's pretty hard to get very excited about this guy given the low likely upside.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Why is no one talking about 2x Cy guy Snell?
