Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Really no interest at all in Belt again Don't need a guy who strains his back 4x per year then takes a week every time to find his swing and is just a coinflip to be healthy and helpful come crunch time. Yeah he's running on fumes. That was a nifty signing but I wouldn't roll the dice on him.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 I feel like the most likely of the FAs to come back (of the ones anyone actually cares about anyway) might actually be Chapman? He was dogshit with the bat from April onwards, but on the whole his numbers over the season are basically identical to last year's. Everyone keeps saying "he's not the defender he was once", which is probably true, but by every metric available he was actually a better defender this season than the last. His avg EV was excellent (98th percentile), barrel rate and hard hit rate were elite (98th and 100th!! percentile respectively), he didn't chase much, and both his sprint speed and baserunning value were once again good. Maybe you hope he takes the QO, or try to offer him a 1/20-22 pillow deal, where he'll spend all offseason getting rid of the ******** opposite field approach and come into Spring launching bombs to the pull side, with some regression happening during the season, to once again put up yet another 3-4 win season. There's basically no reason to believe Chapman will be a < 3 win player in 2024, his mean is exactly that of 2022-2023, which were practically the exact same season on the aggregate.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 I'd love to have Chapman back. I suppose there is a chance. I think KK has a chance to come back because he'll likely be cheap again. I'm going to get attacked by many posters for even suggesting it because everybody has us signing solely offensive position players this offseason but I could see it happening.

Interesting - I do wonder if there is a chance he takes the QO. What does he get on a one year pillow deal in the current market given the compensatory draft pick? Maybe around or just over the QO? If he wants to bet on himself, accepting the QO may simply depend upon whether he's happy in Toronto.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Chapman accepting the QO would be a great

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Boras doesn't let his guys go the QO way. If his market doesn't develop it might be his only decent option.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 If his market doesn't develop it might be his only decent option. The Yankees are licking their chops at the thought of Chapman playing third base and giving them .600 ops. for 4/$85M

I am so f***ing mad at the world reading these stats. Matt Chapman had like 10 HR stolen from him this year due to some combination of bad luck and an approach that doesn't maximize home runs. Maybe more than 10 HR. His spray chart on statcast has multiple blue "double" dots that are well over the average MLB of fence, lmao. 100th percentile hard hit rate with 98th percentile barrel rate and 98th percentile MaxEv equaling 17 HR in 581 PA is nothing but a constant bicycle kick in the nuts Can they uhhhhhhh lower the outfield walls a bit? They turned RC into Kauffman Stadium

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 If his market doesn't develop it might be his only decent option. His market won't develop near fast enough for him to truly weigh them against a QO. QO decisions come really early in the offseason
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 from Votto's mouth.... if the Reds do not exercise his option he will test the market. SIGN HIM

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 God no. I'd rather bring Belt back.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 God no. I'd rather bring Belt back. Votto would have to show he's fully healthy
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 40 year old Votto isn't the solution to anything
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Votto would have to show he's fully healthy He's 40. He will never be fully healthy again
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 He's 40. He will never be fully healthy again Could be right but options are limited, if they can get him on the cheap, mentor Vlady, low risk signing

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Could be right but options are limited, if they can get him on the cheap, mentor Vlady, low risk signing Mentor Vlad, lol. They would probably never talk. That's like asking KD Lang to mentor Lizzo
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 I would be fine with Votto being a pinch hitter off the bench and starting occasionally but he would not be a big part of the plan. He looks like he can be serviceable for cheap. Not a bad veteran hitter to have on your bench. Plus he's one of the best Canadian Baseball players to ever play so it would be cool to see him finish his career here. It's a logical fit.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Mentor Vlad, lol. They would probably never talk. That's like asking KD Lang to mentor Lizzo KD Lang? that's your analogy lmfao

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 He's 40. He will never be fully healthy again It will also turn the season into the Canadian homecoming sideshow. I can see the saccharine Sportsnet videos of him and Hazel now: "So, since you from East York, do you like Tim Hortons?" f*** off with that side show s***.

I can see the saccharine Sportsnet videos of him and Hazel now: "So, since you from East York, do you like Tim Hortons?" f*** off with that side show s***. Maybe they come up with a new jingle and slogan around his return wouldn't that be fun The sideshow part of it will wear off after the first few weeks anyway. Options are limited, it's basically a few impact FA's - Soler, JDM, Belli, Teo, LGJ and a few others and then it's the trade route and relying on unproven Barger/Martinez/Horwitz. Luckily the pitching staff is set.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Yes. He had no chance To relay it to the bench, and have the bench relay to the catcher then to the pitcher through pitch comm in well under 20 seconds is pretty cool
