I feel they'll go with a 6 man rotation, after tomorrows off day they play 17 straight.

Yup most likely.

It would be real dumb to give Gausman/Berrios less starts because we want to squeeze in a s***** Manoah and a guy coming off TJS this late in the season.

That's a perfect way to miss out on the playoffs or perhaps important seeding just to save some feelings. This ain't little league, man up and reward the guys who have performed all year.

It's far from dumb to run a 6 man rotation for a few weeks where the team has no days off. The Jays ran with a 4 man rotation for an extended period of time and are extremely fortunate that they escaped with all of the starters in good health afterwards. Bassitt in particular has been battling some minor issues this season directly as a result of this, and the remaining rotation members had to completely alter their maintenance routines in order for the team to survive this stretch. Gausman was on track for a career high in innings, and had his own minor injury scare heading into the all star break.

The top 3 of the rotation has pitched a ton of innings this season, and the ability to back off of a bit during a tough stretch of games will allow these starters to get a little more rest and recovery time heading into the stretch run of the season. It's a good thing they will be able to take the foot off of the gas a little bit for a few weeks given how hard the top 3 has been pushed this season.

I don’t disagree although I’m sure they will manipulate the rotation to give Gausman/Berrios an extra day of rest rather than running straight 1-6

Idk. Ryu and Manoah might both be butt cheeks and it’s all moot

I could see the Jays ending up with Michael Lorenzen too

What? No man... You "reward" the guys that have carried the team and thrown a s*** ton of innings by giving them an extra days rest while ramping up for a play-off run. The top 4 in the rotation are set, you need to know what you have with Manoah and they are paying Ryu 20 million. Add to that the bullpen needs some rest if you are going to save them if one of the 6 starters get lit up. Health is as important as talent once you make the postseason.

They should let all 6 guys pitch the next 3 times through the rotation.

Gausman, Berrios and Bassitt are on record of support in the potential 6 man, it's the most likely scenario and as Zwelling mentioned they'll just manipulate matchups as they see fit with Ryu and Manoah sitting an extra day etc, it's a good luxury to have... I was thinking Lorenzen could be a target also, he can start and come out of the pen, makes sense.

That’s what I’m thinking. You just plug Manoah or Ryu in where you want to push the other guys back a day.

Lorenzen can help raise the floor. He would be insurance on Ryu/Manoah.

Isn't he more extra starter/long-man depth though? I'd like to see them target more of a fireballer/swing and miss guy for when runners are on base and we need outs. Between Ryu/Manoah/Richards our post season long men are covered.

When are we extending Danny Jansen?

They probably should soon or make it a big priority in the offseason. With what we've seen from Kirk this season, the Jays need to keep Jansen around more than ever.

Jansen is a great guy to have as the backbone of the team, just need to keep him healthy. Wish he could play more but they are probably trying to keep him protected.

Offer him Grichuk money and see if he takes it

When Atkins is made aware that teams are in fact allowed to extend talent that they’ve developed, his mind will be blown. Hopefully Shapiro clues him in this winter. Vlad and Bo are understandable since they likely want $300M plus but extending Jansen should not be that complicated unless he doesn’t want to be here.

But why would Danny Jansen sign an extension?

He has tons of talent but has always been handicapped by injuries. The contract he could get right now would be depressed by that track record.

He is arb3 in 2024 which will be his age 29 season.

If I am Jansen I am betting on myself and trying to have a huge year in 2024 before testing the market.

I mean, if he can somehow stay healthy and play 120+ games that could be a 30 HR, 3+ WAR season...

The Jays are under absolutely no pressure to extend Jansen. Kirk is under control for 3 more years after this and probably projects better anyway.

Sean Murphy >> Jansen. If Jansen got something like 4/50, he should jump on it. Good thing you’re not an agent

The benefit for the Jays is they extend him before he has the 30 HR, 3+ WAR season, so he's more affordable. I just think Jansen's becoming a bit of a backbone of the team and would hate to see him leave. That said - you make a lot of good points that would lead you to believe they will not extend him.

Of course he's better. What is your point, exactly?

Why would Toronto offer Jansen 70% of the Murphy contract when Murphy is twice the player, and Kirk is already under control?

Man does it ever suck that basically half of the Jays home grown core are (I'm sorry) over weight slobs.

The team is on pace for 90+ wins and another playoff berth despite Manoah being -0.5 fWAR, Vladdy being 0.2 fWAR and Kirk being 0.4 fWAR.

Imagine of those three actually acted like elite athletes and kept themselves in prime shape and weren't collectively hovering around replacement level?

The jays would be pushing for the best record in baseball right now.

I'd love to see the Jays keep him around. Could be our very own Jason Varitek.

Kirk is pretty much Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval started his decline at 24/25.

Jano has this injury wrap but to be fair to him getting HBP, which has happened to him to keep him out, is a tough bar to in part judge someones durability by. Thats just unlucky. Could happen to Bo or any player at any at bat any day.

(I realize he has missed time for other injuries too)

I'll never forget him taking a swing for the BoSox and he was so fat his belt exploded. Another case of buying high after a WS tear he went on. Mo, Prince, Vlad, Kirk - long term deals and bad body types usually dont age well.

Sandoval was amazing. Dude was f***ing MASSIVE at times.

I remember once with Boston he shed a bunch of weight and looked fit. It was exactly like when your fat buddy goes on a crash diet and drops 40 pounds. I think Sandoval had it back on and then some within 1 year.

He was in the Mexican league ending careers:

Crazy thing about Sandoval was that he managed to play a very good 3B despite being legitimately obese.

You questioned why he would sign. He’s not getting anything like a Murphy contact so if he’s getting the money people are suggesting, he should take it.

Imagine what he could've been if he had any discipline.
