Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 closer Jordan Romano has been selected to the All-Star Game as a replacement. It’s his second appearance Weird choice especially replacing a starter. Berrios deserved it more. And if they wanted a reliever they probably should have took Mayza or Richards.

He's second in MLB in saves while blowing only 3 save opportunities, and has produced a full win above replacement at the all star break.

I just believe there are much better choices. Especially not on the Jays. Lets face it he got in because of saves. Also Zach Pop was activated and optioned to Buffalo. I can’t imagine he’s thrilled about that. Mitch White holding a roster spot hostage with no options though.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 What has Romano done or not done that makes him not all star worthy? I don't get the reasoning behind throwing shade at the dude, he's done his job and locked down the 9th inning in save opportunities this season. He's one of of the MLB in saves, has barely blown any opportunities, has a statcast page full of red and he's been one of if not the best Jays reliever this season. He sometimes gives up home runs at inopportune times, especially in non save opportunities but that about the only blemish I can see so far this year. It’s called an opinion man lol. I don’t dislike Romano I just legit think there were both better options on both the Jays and other teams. I also don’t like relievers replacing starters. Feel starter’s should be prioritized in the selection process.

He's second in MLB in saves while only blowing 3 opportunities, has a statcast page full of red and by FWAR is tied for the team lead in wins above replacement. Pop is unfortunately a bit of a victim of the options game, but as a player without options he's going to have to earn his way back onto the major league roster. White has done nothing this season to earn his way of the roster either, so his place on the 26 man roster currently has little to nothing to do with Pop's fate right now.

You can’t even say Biggio is below average without getting all sorts of evidence that he’s a key piece of the puzzle

You are forgetting how bad he has sucked in non-save opportunities... I don't have a dog in the fight over him being chosen for the All-Star game, let's just present the whole picture. Also, I wish he would get a haircut and a beard trim if if he is going represent, he looks like fuzzy wuzzzy.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Quite the game yesterday. Great comeback. 50 Wins at the break is solid. At the end of the day its a number relative to what other teams are doing. We can't afford both KK in CF and Varso with his 0.7 WAR 70's wRC+ in LF. The D just isn't worth THAT much. We paid a 4 WAR player price for Varsho (at the time) and he has to give us more offence from LF - the drag bunts vs LHP are nifty but aren't gonna get it done. Move KK for a useful piece and shift Varsho to CF? KK has had a solid first half. This would be less of an issue if Vlad was '21 ish mashing balls and wasn't worth 0.4 WAR, but he is at this point.

Too desperate. Varsho simply needs to figure it out enough to hit to a 100 wRC+. The team needs Springer, Vlad, and Kirk to figure it out as well. But when you say it like this it does make you hopeful for positive regression. There aren't many players on the team you would expect to be much worse offensively, going forward... *I would support acquiring a RHB OF platoon guy. Then at least if it doesn't get better they can sit one of the lefty CF down ocassionally.

I have been hopeful for the first 91 games of positive regression. I am squinting hard to see the offensive run production/game more match their underlying numbers. It should. I think changes are warranted as a contingency regardless. I like the kid and what he brings overall, but Varsho's offence has been awful. If he was a 100 bat in CF we could live with that.

I'm more concerned about the process than the results. He just looks kind of hopeless against a diversity of pitchers. High fastballs = kryptonite. He honestly just swings too much. You could probably make him a 100 wRC+ hitter by just toning down the Swing%.

Trading KK to a contender, moving Varsho to CF, and acquiring a LF is the best option, IMO. If you want to maximize 2023 wins then keeping KK and replacing Varsho probably makes more sense but that’s not happening due to Varsho having more years of control and more upside overall. I think 2024 Varsho as a full time CF will be better, but that doesn’t help in 2023. I can’t see Atkins trading KK, though. Most likely they will trade for a RHB OF who can hit lefties well and see if they can make that work. Another thing that needs to be done at this point is Jansen needs to start more than Kirk. Maybe Kirk gets to live off his first half in 2022 a bit longer but a singles hitting fatty who is slower than the people posting on this forum is not an asset offensively. Let him backup Jansen more often.

That’s 3 full seasons for many. The sample size isn’t huge but it’s not small. After 1500 PAs unless there is a pretty big adjustment the leagues kind of know what he is and the swing holes. He has shown in the past he isn’t this bad offensively.

Absolutely 0 chance that happens. Thats the type of clubhouse crushing trade that can tank a season.
