Vlad Jr confirmed to be in the HR Derby at the AllStar game.

 

I think this is a good thing, like you always hear about how going into the derby messes up your swing because all you do is try to hit HRs - this is probably exactly what Vlad needs to fix his swing.

But yeah I agree, I think it will help more than hurt for sure.

I don't know. We assume the training staff has OKd this and know that a guy with occasional sore wrist and knee won't be harmed by taking a couple hundred violent swings in 90 minutes...

 

but you also assume that the training staff could get the obesity issues under control so who knows... like maybe the training staff gives a diet plan which involves no A&W (even though they are a sponsor) and a wrist maintenance plan which involves no homrerun derby and the player(s) tell the them to go f*** themselves.

I have a couple of theories, one is that he only hits in minor league parks because of some psychological issue.

 

And it's not at all that minor league parks are "small". I think because the dimensions are mostly the same, and the visibility and wind patterns may make it harder to hit in minor league parks. His minor league numbers and Dunnedin/Buffalo numbers make perfect sense in context. One of the greatest minor league hitters ever, who hit .400 in aa at age 19, would normally progress to destroy MLB pitching by age 22, which he did, in the minor league parks against major league pitching.

 

His numbers in major league parks are a different guy and maybe he needs to be hypnotized or something or visualize he is hitting in New Hampshire.

 

Second theory is that he's been dealing with minor injuries 70% of his MLB career. I think his rookie season he had an oblique and knee issues which required scheduled off days, his sophomore season he had severe obesity, this year talk of wrist and knee problems, so if this theory is true home run contest is probably not good, but who knows.

I think it's safe to write 2023 off for Manoah, but what he does in the off season to prepare for 2024 will be critical. Looking at Vlad (who actually tried to get in shape at one point) and Kirk, I'm not counting on anyone in this org to get into great shape who isn't already motivated to get in that shape, but Manoah's diet/conditioning might be costing him generational wealth, so you just have to hope there's enough incentive in there to change. Hitting rock bottom is usually a good thing in that regard.

Two words: Kevin Kiermaier. In his first year with the Blue Jays, the three-time Gold Glove winner has played off-the-charts defense in center field; his 14 DRS and 8 OAA are both tied for the major league lead at any single position, and his 6.1 UZR is second. And if the numbers are fantastic, the visuals are even better. Check out this reel of what may or may not be his five best catches… if we’re considering only the first three weeks of June:

 

Meanwhile, though he’s only played 200.2 innings in center as Kiermaier’s backup, Daulton Varsho has 7 DRS, 4 OAA, and 2.7 UZR there, pus another 7 DRS (but -2 OAA and 1.3 UZR) in 459 innings in left; his career numbers at all three outfield positions confirm that he’s an elite flychaser, in case there was any doubt. In the infield, Matt Chapman has been exceptional (8 DRS, 3.6 UZR, 3 RAA), and likewise for Alejandro Kirk behind the plate (6 DRS, 4.2 FRM, 4 CRAA). On the flip side, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s numbers at first base have really gone downhill; both his -7 RAA and -3 DRS represent substantial dropoffs from 2022.

Yeah Bo definitely worthy of starting. Would rather have seen Bo or Franco over Seager starting.

 

Good to see Vladdy at the HR derby, but he's not worthy of starting. Could make the case for Chapman but he's slowed down after his hot April.

 

Hopefully some of Vladdy, Chapman, Merrifield and KK make it as reserves.
