Whether in season or off-season, Manoah has clearly been eating in a significant calorie surplus. If you are trying to put on lean mass (which he probably doesn't need to do), you do that in a very modest calorie surplus. Otherwise, he should be eating all year at maintenance calories relative to his activity level.

He's fat because he's eating too much.

Thanks for clarifying that. I wasn't 100% sure how he got so fat.

He could be eating at terrible times as well. Let's say he fasts all day... wakes up at 3:00AM and eats an entire XL pizza then goes back to bed.

You mean that's a bad strategy? F

If he was in the US he'd just shoot him anyway.

Manoah will be a great test for the “ High Performance Department”. They have 300 innings worth of data where this guy had an ERA under 3. If they can’t fix that it’ll be a massive fail

This guy could eat every meal under team guidance and he’s still 100 pounds overweight. Wild

I forgot how highly touted he became that one year. Top 50 prospect across the board in 2015.

https://www.thestar.com/sports/bluejays/2022/08/20/its-the-fall-for-dalton-pompey-the-former-blue-jays-outfielder-who-is-leaving-baseball-on-his-terms.html

Seems like he's got a solid perspective on things though.

Really Injuries killed him. 2015 Blue Jays started out with a bunch or rookies. Sanchez, Norris, Osuna, Castro, Pompey and Travis. Only Sanchez and Osuna survived to the end.

Basically injuries to Donaldson, Sanchez, Pompey, Tulo, and Travis destroyed the great 2017-18 Blue Jays teams. AA left Shatkins all that and their high (a.k.a. low) performance team could not keep that group healthy.

Those guys were all basically made of glass unfortunately. It's hard to blame the high performance team for Tulo continuing to suffer injury after injury, MLB changing the baseball seams leading to Sanchez suffering blister after blister, Pompey suffering concussions from a bat falling on his head, Travis having a freaking congenital birth defect where he was missing a bone etc.

Lmao who is making these decisions

Its smart. It basically puts the entire problem of Bass being a homophobe to bed completely as far as the public is concerned.

Lmao only an idiot would actually believe that.

They should get someone who doesnt hate gay people to catch the ball. Bass is clearly not a "catcher"!

Doing what they do between periods and games is not for fitness, it's getting rid of lactic acid buildup in the muscles (mostly the legs) from constantly being at 75-100% effort in the game with minimal rest. Ball players wouldnt have that problem.

Lol. No s*** John. Been working out since I was 14 and I’m 58. The point is they didn’t use to do that. They used to smoke cigarettes in the dressing room between periods. Point being activities and routines have changed as more information about the body & sport has been obtained and frankly, the amount of money they can make has gone up. Athletes at all levels in all sports are adapting. This change in behavior and routine is but one example.

Sure, but using that as an example doesnt really equate to baseball, the sport is far different from a physical perspective than hockey, the NBA or football.

A ball player would have nearly 0 need to do the kind of thing hockey guys do between innings or after the game (maybe the catcher's would benefit a bit as they're always in a squat?).

look at Thor as an example. Dude went off the rails a few years ago and bulked up in his upper torso, and is now as ripped as can be as a pitcher, but him building all that muscle in the upper half of his body in the arms makes no sense from a pitching standpoint. Pitchers want strong cores and legs ( i know you know...) but for their arms they want long and lean muscles. He bulked his muscles up, and is now a shadow of his former self, laregly due to injury after injury that he suffered after he changed his body in a way that is counterproductive to the motions he uses as a pitcher.

MLB guys during the season (imo) should be far more concerned with maintenance than doing anything to change their bodies in any meaningful way. If Manoah or Kirk want to lose weight, they absolutely should, but they need to do that s*** in the offseason and then switch up their regimens to a maintenance thing during the season. The season is way too long and way too much of a grind to be worried about calorie surplusses and/or deficits on a daily or even weekly basis.

Not sure if this is a great idea honestly but you can’t doubt its a pretty comical turn of events

Bass should wear a shirt that says men can get pregnant

Manoah isn’t in season at this point. Since he’s in Florida they should be feeding him every meal and manipulating his days to improve conditioning and start shedding some fat.

As far as I’m concerned he’s starting at square one and has an open timetable meaning he will be back once he reaches certain thresholds set forth by the team.

I get what you're saying but he's absolutely still in season when it comes to his throwing programs, pen days, etc. It's not like he's being 100% shut down, he could only be shut down if he is placed on the IL. Suffice to say that anything body shape related is handled in the offseason, there's too many variables to deal with in season for that stuff. Diet can be changed sure to change the types of foods he eats, but they wouldn't be concerned with calories surplusses or deficits as it relates to specific body changes

Workout programs and exercise with any specific goals would all be off season work as well.

Bass seems to be sticking to his guns. Good on him.

Lol, he's definitely not sticking to his guns.
