Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 I agree with Jim in that the MLB didn’t do its due diligence and really jumped the gun on the suspension. Makes them look very incompetent and malicious. The suspension was after a 9 month investigation. Same reason Franco has not been suspended yet, the investigation is ongoing.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 I hope Jim is taking notes during this lesson he’s receiving No lesson, you are dumn
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 Must be working trades because there just aren't many good hitting free agents available I'd love to see JD Martinez for DH and a trade for a heavy hitting COF or 3B Unless IKF is the starting 3B (god I hope not), then I think they will trade for a 3B option. There simply isn't anything on the free agent market besides Chapman who would be a costly (and likely bad) long term investment. Turning Manoah into a 3B with some control is probably the plan. Whether that is possible is another story. If the Cardinals are still on the market for SP, then Manoah+ for someone like Brendan Donovan would be a great move for the Jays, but don't know if the Cards still want pitching after all their signings or whether they'd even want to move Donovan for Manoah. I'm drawing a blank as far as who they can trade for. I doubt they'd want Machado's contract even if the Padres ate a bunch of it. The one spot where they can use free agency is clearly DH, as there are a bunch of options there (JDM, Hoskins, Soler, Turner, etc). It's the infield where it gets tricky.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 I kinda can't wait to face Giolito at Fenway
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Translation: Wander Franco will appear before the Public Ministry in Puerto Plata next Tuesday, January 2. @Olgadinall in the morning hours.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Would have done that $19M+ annually for 2 years for Giolito? Barf
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 $19M+ annually for 2 years for Giolito? Barf Yeah the two years is nice but they definitely paid a premium for the short term.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Yeah the two years is nice but they definitely paid a premium for the short term. And they'll still be 4th or 5th in this division and probably 5th
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Hey man - where is Wander? Trató corregir su error sobornado a las chichas y falló. Esta semana despidió a toda su barra de abogados
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 $19M+ annually for 2 years for Giolito? Barf Yeah, that's a ballsy move, if he doesn't opt out that means he sucked, lol.

MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 $19M+ annually for 2 years for Giolito? Barf We're giving that to IKF and Chad Green.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Giolito did post a 4.1 WAR season in 2021, 2.0 WAR season in 2020, and a 5.2 WAR season in 2019. Had K/9 rates of 10.13, 12.07 and 11.62 during those three seasons. At first glance when I saw the deal, yuck. But Red Sox paying an extra couple of dollars for the upside. He's still only 29 and they've done a good job in the past with broken down pitchers and helping turn their career back around e.g. Nathan Eovaldi. Obviously if he has a solid year, he opts out. If he sucks again, stuck having him around a second year. Gotta hope he can produce close to a 2 WAR season worst case.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Ben Clemens thought Giolito would get 4 for 60 and the fans crowdsourced 2 for 30. So the Red Sox didn't do too bad I suppose.
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 Where are you getting a 5 war ceiling without committing long term in this free agency right now? We need to hit on some high variance if we want to win something. Are we all in or not. You're not getting there with 2 or 3 IKFs
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 He's a different pitcher Mediocre to bad for two full seasons. Greinke was a 5 war pitcher as recently as Giolito. Anyone excited by Giolito's upside should be ecstatic with Alek Manoah as a no expectations #5 SP
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 I think it’s been clear that the punishment in the NBa or NFL eventually would be much less for someone like Wander, but I think it helps him right now more being a MLB, as it seemingly makes it less of a national story for a 22yo generational guy on the cusp of greatness
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 I mean the contract is fine, whatever, but it's $40M guaranteed to a 2023 1 win player
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted December 30, 2023 Posted December 30, 2023 I mean the contract is fine, whatever, but it's $40M guaranteed to a 2023 1 win player But you could also say we just gave $36m to a 2023 0.2 win player (IKF) and a 2023 0.3 win player (Green), right? Just they have no path *at all* to a 5 win ceiling whereas Giolito needs a tick of velo back and maybe some slider tweak.

Chadley Green and Isaac Falaffle combined for 6 bWAR in 2021 the bet for the Red Sox is: a) it works out and they get a good SP for 2024 for $19.5M it does not work out and they pay a s***** SP $39M over two years the downside is about as significant as the upside comparing to IKF and Green deals is weird and makes no sense. lesser players making half the money or less; less variance on the contracts. I think IKF has a realistic chance to out-WAR Giolito in 2024, though. Will be hilarious when/if it happens.

Based on this logic, we might as well sign Syndergaard - he has big time upside too. And please stop quoting Green's WAR from last year like that matters. The guy has consistently been a 1.5+ WAR reliver. He might out WAR Giolito on his own in 1/2 the innings.
