max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 So sign Bellinger to an eight year deal. That makes sense I never once suggested signing Bellinger at any cost. If the term and AAV comes down to something more commensurate with the risky offensive profile I think he's worth a bit of risk, otherwise the club should simply move on. I think Bellinger at something like a Springer contract is worth a gamble given the potential upside he offers.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 No one is panicking, there are just different opinions on the path forward. The very notion of the term “window “ is panicking. Another option is continuing to simply plug holes with short term contracts and make a deadline move. As a fan since 87, I LOVE making the playoffs on an annual basis. I don’t see us anywhere near a need for a rebuild
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 The bulk of the good players on this team, if not all of them, are free agents either after 2025 (Vlad, Bo, Romano, Bassitt, Swanson, Mayza, Green) or 2026 (Gausman, Kirk, Varsho, Springer, maybe Berrios if he opts out). So yes there is a window, but flexibility can lead to having a more fluid view of the roster long term, and there are ways to expand the window (extensions, trades, reallocating funds). Right now the Jays are in a good spot where they don't have any albatross contracts and can easily pivot in direction depending on the circumstances. Where the Jays really have to start stepping up is internal player development. I'm not sure if Orelvis, Tiedemann, Roden, Schneider, Horowitz, Barger, Jimenez, etc (just naming prospects in AA/AAA that are close) are good enough to extend the window beyond 2025, but you kinda have to give them a shot (whichever ones aren't traded beforehand) to see if a couple can stick. Schneider last season was found money. I'm firmly in the "find the best 1-2 year deals you can get" category. Try to make the 2024-25 teams as good as possible but don't make a regrettable long term decision for the sake of trying to maximize a perceived window.

You say you don't see the Jays as anywhere near the need for a rebuild, yet a few posts back you mention trading Vlad and Bo.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 (edited) At this payroll you just don’t make any albatross contracts and you are fine. Obviously tighter in AL EAST. 2025 (Vlad, Bo, Romano, Bassitt, Swanson, Mayza, Green) 4 relief pitchers in that 7. Id sure as heck hope we can replace that in 2 years. Thats like 40m in salary). A pitcher going into his age 37 season making 21m, vlad (a dh making 25m a year) and bo (who I love the defensive improvement while his baserunning has decreased) We continue to have 89-92 win teams at this payroll. Its good times Edited December 23, 2023 by wamco

If payroll stayed static over past 8 years , Atkins would be gone by now. Payroll increases have saved him. In terms of trades , I don t see trading a 1 WAR 1b man making 20 m and 25 next year as a rebuild. Even trading Bo could get another mlb player and free up salary for another player(s).

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Franco has never been suspended. It was a voluntary leave. The accusation that Franco is a pedo is suspect. There have been reports that Franco was a minor when the relationships started, and the relationships continued after he became an adult and they were still minors. The age separation is apparently 3-4 years. Such cases are generally not reported, nor pursued. I expect nothing would have happened, if Franco was not a highly paid MLB player. I don't see this as a pedophile case. Franco is not 30 years old and preying on minors. Off the record, but direct from a Rays coach to my my ears, there are players and coaches on the Rays who would be unhappy if Wander comes back. Person who said this gave nothing more about what the story is, but that makes me believe it is more than what any public story is telling.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 (edited) Yeah. Tampa just might have to eat that contract they signed him to. Or try to trade him at a massive discount relative to his baseball value. One of the few regretful contracts they've ever given out of that's what happens Edited December 23, 2023 by G-Snarls

Ya I am sure there are those that would be unhappy, those that wouldn't care, and those that would welcome him back. That's just the nature of the matter.

The Yankees couldn’t even sway his decision with more money. Absolutely 0 chance he was ever even considering Toronto. Ohtani probably wasn’t either.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 I kinda hope Yamamoto is a complete bust. Like a Hideki Irabu.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Yes, other Pedos Athletes tend to have more testosterone than coaches or dudes like you/hurl. This allows them to distinguish what’s pedo and what’s not
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 I kinda hope Yamamoto is a complete bust. Like a Hideki Irabu. Every time I think of Irabu I can't help but think of that Seinfeld scene of George Constanza's Dad Frank raving in court about Steinbrenner giving him $12M.

IMO they’d play him in LF

Owner Steve Cohen's Mets finished with a tax payroll of $374.7 million, according to figures finalized by Major League Baseball on Thursday and obtained by The Associated Press. That topped the previous high of $291.1 million by the 2015 Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets' tax bill came to $100,781,932 after they finished fourth in the NL East at 75-87 in the most expensive flop in baseball history. That more than doubled the prior high of $43.6 million by the 2015 Dodgers.
