L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 A trade with the Reds makes perfect sense. Pretty much just take whichever infielder they’ll take for Manoah
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Author Posted December 7, 2023 I known to exaggerate a bit. It certainly felt like it though. Wrc+ by month for CHappy…. 216, 63, 75, 154, 49, 75. 1st half 123, 2nd half 88. Full year 110. 28.4% k rate, 10.7% walk rate. Wrc+ by month for Moncada.. 140, 77, 4, 20, 106, 145. 1st half 76, 2nd half 114. Full year 98. 30% K rate, 5.6% walk I probably don’t need to tell you who is better defensively. Tell us again how Moncada was superior to Chapman last season even abandoning the hyperbole

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 So tl;dr I should’ve put 4/6 I see you aren't particularly good with numbers. Chapman posted better numbers than Moncada in 3 out of the 6 months of the season. The wRC+ split between the two month by month: April +76 Chapman May +14 Moncada June +71 Chapman July +134 Chapman August +57 Moncada September +70 Moncada Chapman had 3 months where he was dramatically better than Moncada, vs Moncada who was dramatically better in 2 months. There was a single month where they posted relatively similar numbers.

Chapman is not the next level answer. Use the money somewhere else

Use the money somewhere else Chapman actually came within inches of putting the Blue Jays ahead in each game of the playoffs as he flied out the wall in deep center field and narrowly missed extra bases down the third base line by an even shorter distance. I'll agree that Chapman returning would feel an awful lot like a consolation prize compared to the other names available this offseason.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Trade for Yoan Moncada. I would take Moncada. White Sox would obviously have to eat some salary but I'm sure they would.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Which Reds infielders can play 3B that we could target in a trade?
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Oh no, people are trying to buy the Orioles from the Angelos family That's not good news. Dumb ownership was perhaps our only line of defense against the current waves of amazing Orioles prospects.

Yeah that team's collection of young talent with an ownership group willing to offer them fair extensions and properly supplement the team through free agency is a terrifying prospect.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Why? He's awful He's already posted a 4 WAR season and 5.5 WAR season in his career. He's still only 28 as well. What other 3B do you have in mind? If the Jays can't bring back Chapman, they need a third baseman. Suarez already traded, and Candelario signed with the Red. Not many options available. I would definitely roll the dice on Moncada as a bounce back candidate if the White Sox eat some of his salary and doesn't cost much in a trade.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Yeah Moncado is worth a 2024 gamble but CHW has to eat like half the money.

How much do you think Chapman gets as a FA now that Candelario is off the market?

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Which Reds infielders can play 3B that we could target in a trade? Steer could be a possibility at 3B. India likely gets moved, but as a 2B
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 somewhere between 4/80 and 4/100 guess for Chapman could be shocking in either direction though! 3/60 or 5/130 in play hahaha
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 I'd do a 4 year deal for Chapman. He's not the most exciting player to watch on a daily basis. It can even be downright brutal at times. But at the end of the year when you look at his Fangraphs page he's going to clear 3 WAR.

Once we sign Oh Sho we won't have enough money to keep the soda machine stocked, much less pay for Chappy.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Damn. What team is going to give him that contract? Yankees, Giants, Cubs and Blue Jays all could use a 3B.

On the one hand they tried to extend him while still under contract and therefore had exclusive negotiating rights. Theoretically in free agency he can tempt multiple bidders into offering more. On the other hand he played like complete s*** for the middle and last third of the season and almost certainly hurt his potential earnings
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Steer could be a possibility at 3B. India likely gets moved, but as a 2B Steer would be an interesting target if the Reds are thinking of playing India at 1B.

Giving Chapman anything more than 100M over 5 years would be ridiculous. He needs to pull a Semien/Bellinger by betting on himself and then look for that contract. What he did this past season was pukeworthy for his standards.

You're on a massive roll today posting stupid s***. Chapman posted a 4.1 FWAR in 2021 (3.9 WAR/600 plate appearances), a 4.2 WAR in 2022 (4.06 WAR/600 plate appearances), and a 3.5 FWAR in 2023 (3.61 WAR/600 plate appearances). The 2023 drop saw him play in 15 fewer games than 2022 due to a finger injury, and the injury noticably hampered upon his return. But here you are calling it pukeworthy because he experienced a whopping 10% drop in his relative performance.
